Fulham Linked With Move for Smith
Monday, 18th Jul 2016 09:34

Fulham are being linked with a move for Town centre-half Tommy Smith, while Blackburn and Reading are also said to be showing interest in the 26-year-old.

According to The Sun, the Cottagers are keen on Smith and are ready to pay £750,000 for the New Zealand international.

Smith has been with the Blues since joining the academy a decade ago and has been a regular for most of Mick McCarthy’s time in charge at Portman Road.

However, with Adam Webster having signed from Portsmouth earlier in the summer, competition for Town’s central defensive roles has increased, Christophe Berra having been preferred for Smith’s preferred left-sided position in the past.

Smith is contracted to the Blues until next summer, Town having exercised an option for a further year on the deal he signed in 2013 at the end of last season.

Mojo
Seems as if MM has done a u-turn on both Malarcyk and Stewart recently.

£750k is pittance for a consistent Championship centre back. If Grant Hanley of Blackburn is valued at £8m then Smith has to be worth at least £2m-£3m. Sadly, out of contract next season and buying a player in a similar position for the same amount of money makes it sound realistic. I'd personally offer him a new deal as Berra's getting on and Chambers hasn't been good at all when he's covered back in his natural centre back position.

PJewellisaGod - Has he really, I know he has played him in the warm up matches but then he has played everyone that is available to him. I know he has publicly praised Stewart but he did the same last year and then made him available again as soon as the season started and told fans he wasn't in his plans.

@Michael11 : But what is "getting on" in the world of professional football? I saw another poster earlier negatively saying that Berra is "in his 30s"; this is true as he is 31, but it was written to suggest he was mid-30s while Smith's actual age was pointed out to be 26 in the same sentence.
31 for a centre half is still regarded as being in his prime. His game isn't about pace or box to box running; he's a centre half and many similar type players in the past have gone on to play at Championship level until 37/38. If Berra is fit and starts the season well, we will have one of the best defenders in the league in our side.
I don't like the rumour of Rangers' interest though.

Had a good season but not capable of playing in the premier league.

We must do all we can to keep Smith, last season he was our best defender, as Berra had an off season by his usual high standards. I also think Tommy is better on the ball than Berra and brought the ball out from the back a few times last season. Tommy is our longest serving player and is ipswich through and through.

A highly experienced, consistent, yet still relatively young central defender - surely worth a seven figure sum? Ok, Smith is no world-beater but he is one of our better players and would be a regular starter for most Championship clubs. I would put a £2m on his head as a starting point.

As others have said, I think it was always the case that one of Berra or Smith would make way after the club 'broke the bank' on Webster. The rumoured £750k could reflect Town's need to sell to balance the books.

I'm glad we all take what is written in The Sun as gospel. They've got such a good track record of reporting the truth after all!

I've never been so against a transfer before, Tommy and Webster could be the defensive pairing we've been crying out for and Tommy is a guy that knows the club, plays for the club and you can tell loves his football as well as being one of the most consistent players in the team (in my opinion) I really hope this is not true!!!

You can put what price you want on Smith but he only has a year to run on his contract and didn't seem keen to sign a new one a few months back. Other clubs know that and will use it as a negotiating tool.

Berra has been flirting with a move north of the border. Why not sell him or try to swap him with some young talented player from the SPL?

Smith has a future at Town.

It will all be about his wages, if he is a big earner at the club, he will go, reduce the salary bill, just look at the number of players we have let go so far, i have lost count, for me Smithy has his days when he is a star but then again he can be a liability being caught out of position etc, i can see him going to be truthful!

Send him to Coventry

Tony Mowbray and Mark Venus

I think that is a joke if we sell Tommy. That be the last nail in Micks coffin. What was the transfer talks between Mick and Evans this weekend at sir Bobby Robinson golf.

Tommy gets regular goals, he usually puts away 4-5 goals per season.
Thats pretty good for a Center Back!

We don't really know what is going on,apart from Tommy turned down a new contract.

We also know that Mr Evans has fallen out with the tennis, rugby, and athletics ruling bodies in the past; also UEFA or FIFA(not sure which)plus HMRC and the local Police. All over money, either by late payment or trying to circumvent rules that pertained to try and get cheap terms.

We cannot therefor expect him to be very generous with the football club either.I know he was previously with Keane and Jewell;but not with McCarthy who I expect is getting paid a hefty sum though.

Some clubs being turned down by a player like Smith would have returned with an increased offer;but I have not heard this in Smith's case, hence the fact that I think there could be something in this rumour.

After 55 years,I am concerned however that the path Evans is taking with this club now,and wonder whether ITFC would have been better off in the long run if it had remained being owned by the supporters, instead of an invisible man with short arms and deep pockets!

Tommy should go. He is half the player he should be because MM plays him on the wrong side of the back four . He won't play him in the correct position as Berra is a better player. As a result of this our back four is unbalanced. We have Webster now so he would give us a better balance and he can pass a ball. Smith can then join a team who would hopefully play him in the correct position and he can develop into the player that MM won't allow him to. No one can deny Smith's commitment or attitude and there are a lot worse centre halves in the premier league and to be fair our team are nowhere near premier league class at the moment. Have you noticed EADT keep doing articles on past glories because apart from Webster so far there is nothing interesting on the horizon and no pre season excitement or gossip to look forward to .

Jesus are we really going anywhere?!?...Selling our most reliable defender of last season. Many people are coming to the conclusion that the move for Webster means that another Central defender will be moving on, surely if there was any sense in this club the RB would be the issue and Chambers would be sold on whether he's captain or not. Personally if given the preference I'd rather see Berra move on out of the 2 central players...it really must be asking too much for this club to have strength in depth in this area of our squad. Anyway 750k certainly not enough.

HackneyBlue added 18:22 - Jul 18
Technically a very poor defender yet plenty of effort ,would take that offer and run.
Chamber is far worse at defending as a right back but thats set to stay .

@Len_Brennan

I personally think Smith had a better season than Berra last year. I didn't mean 31 is getting old or that I don't think Berra is a good defender, I just believe Smith can still develop to be much better than he currently is in the next couple of years where as I worry that Berra will only decline.
