Murphy Completes Newcastle Move
Sunday, 28th Aug 2016 10:16

Daryl Murphy has completed his £3 million move to Newcastle United, signing a two-year deal.

"I'm absolutely delighted to get it over the line and really looking forward to it," Murphy told the Magpies official website.

"When I knew the club was interested, it was a no-brainer for me, so I'm happy it's all done.

"I think with the squad of players that the club have now, there's no reason why we shouldn't be there or thereabouts come the end of the season."

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez added: "Daryl has experience and has proven that he can score goals in the Championship.

"He gives us another option in attack and we could see from this weekend's game against Brighton that we needed more bodies up front.

"Daryl has a good attitude and he can be very important for us this season."

Murphy, whose first English club was Newcastle's great rivals Sunderland during Mick McCarthy’s time in charge at the Stadium of Light, initially joined the Blues for the first of three loan spells under Roy Keane's management in 2010 before signing permanently from Celtic in the summer of 2013.

In the 2014/15 campaign he topped the Championship scoring charts with 27 goals as the Blues reached the play-offs.

Last season the 23-times-capped Republic of Ireland striker netted a more modest 10 in an injury-affected campaign and he was yet to get off the mark for the Blues this season prior to his switch, having had what looked to be a perfectly good goal ruled out at Wolves.

In total, Murphy, who almost joined the Blues from his hometown club Waterford United in 2004/05 having been on trial before he signed for the Black Cats, scored 67 goals in 207 starts and 18 substitute appearances for Town.

Boss McCarthy is confident that he will sign a replacement for Murphy before Wednesday's 11pm deadline.

“I’ve no doubt we will get someone in," he told the club site. "I’ve been on the phone non-stop recently so we will see what happens over the next few days.”

Good luck, when we got the Mings money and the creswell money it was to be reinvested and was substantially more, we spent peanuts. Can't see much or any being spent for a replacement. Which may not be an issue, but a decent like for like replacement is required, at least 5 years younger required

Let's hope it is £3m up front and not £1m a season for the next 3.

I really do hope this is Mick's master plan of replacing Daryl Murphy and then once the toon get promoted we can get him back on a free next summer! But well done anyway Murph on everything you've done here, great servant for the club. I wonder how long it'll take our players to realise there's nobody to hoof it to now!

Best of luck to him. Big contract at 33 years old. I'm really looking forward to us splashing the cash on a couple of quality additions ....

All the best Daryl....
Can't help but feel your agent has a copy of the most cliched new-club player comments though!

All in all I feel this is a good move from ITFC; to bag £3m for a 33 year old is an amazing bit of business really. His purple patch of 2 years ago is highly unlikely to be replicated. What we will miss however is his excellent hold-up play, he was arguably the best in the championship at this. Looking at our current front-line, it is difficult not to worry about where the regular goals are going to come from.

Good luck Murph.

MM please use the money to bring in a proper rightback!

Right he's gone let's move on. If MM doesn't replace him in the next couple of days we know there is no ambition at this club. Spend the money on David Nugent he always scores at Portman road

Why would Clayton Donaldson leave Brum for us, probably on more money than we could offer!

All the best Murph. You sadly were not with us in a time that was legendary, but you were a bit of a legend in your own right who made some dark times a bit less dark. Thanks for powering us to the playoffs.

All the best big man.. Great grafter and his goals in the play off campaign will never be forgotten however a great deal for the club IF this money is to go on a signings NOT A LOAN before the window shuts! Mick should be given the full 3 million to spend on a player or players! 2 decisions have cost us 4 points and with those we would be 2nd!!! It's not all doom and gloom and I for one will be glued to this site to see who we will bring in! Let's hope for a hungry player who wants to play for ITFC! COYB!!

Who will our defence hoof the ball to now?! They may have to actually learn how to pass the ball to our midfield. Rumour has it, we have a midfield! Seriously though, thank you Murph for your professional attitude and service to our beloved club and best of luck for the future. Lets hope we can add a few quality players(Not hoofers) before the window closes. I can dream.

The money would be best spent on young Bradley Dack from Gillingham
than waste it on old stager Donaldson who is 32

I'd like to see Clayton Donaldson, but I don't think he'd see us as club he'd progress his career at. Birmingham are progressing well, and he's started the season well. Money talks though...and we don't talk very loudly!

Ah...I take that back...I wasn't aware he was in his 30s. Let's get someone younger!

I think this is a positive move for both parties AS LONG AS we get a decent replacement. Murph gave us good service and one great season, but time to move on. He gets a good last pay cheque, and maybe the chance of a couple of League Cup games for a PL side next season.
