Lawrence: Town's Ambition Key to Move
Tuesday, 30th Aug 2016 18:47

New signing Tom Lawrence says he chose Town as his loan destination above other interested sides as he wanted to go to a club with ambition. The Blues are set to add to their squad further ahead of Wednesday's 11pm deadline, however, with Burnley pair Michael Kightly and Lukas Jutkiewicz now looking less likely to move to Portman Road.

Foxes midfielder or frontman Lawrence, 22, joined the Blues until the end of the season this afternoon.

Early in the summer it was reported that nine clubs were targeting him, including Premier League duo Hull City and Swansea, as well as SPL champions Celtic and Championship sides Aston Villa, Brighton, Derby, Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Wolves.

“Leicester are signing a lot of players so I spoke to people at the club and told them I thought it was best if I could go out on loan and have the chance to play regular first-team football,” Lawrence told Ipswich Player HD.

“I think there were a few clubs interested but Ipswich are a club that always seem to be up at the top end of the Championship.

“I want to be at a club that has ambition and wants to push for promotion and hopefully we can do that here.

“I have played in the Championship before and it looks as though it could be the toughest year yet with the clubs in the division but we’ve got a good squad here and I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s the first time I have been here and I looked around the stadium this morning and it’s a big club. I just can’t wait to get going now.”

Lawrence will now rejoin the Wales squad ahead of Monday’s opening World Cup qualifier against Moldova in Cardiff when he will be hoping to add to his four full caps.

Town are continuing to look for more additions to their squad ahead of Wednesday’s deadline with a couple of further signings anticipated tomorrow.

Kightly now looks an unlikely addition with Burnley having been unable to bring in the players which would have allowed the 30-year-old to move on.

Lawrence’s recruitment makes adding a wideman less of a priority for Town, however, Blues boss Mick McCarthy may still be keen to augment his squad’s strength in depth with Football League clubs no longer able to bring players in on emergency loans.

A like-for-like replacement for Daryl Murphy, who joined Newcastle at the weekend, is one of McCarthy’s targets but with Clarets striker Jutkiewicz - who as reported on Sunday was on the Town manager's list of potential additions - now looking less likely to end up at Portman Road with Birmingham City believed to be the favourites to land the 27-year-old striker.

I am pleased to see both Best and Lawrence sign, they could be good additions. I doubt neither of those cost much though and both could be hit or miss. If we really are to show the ambition that Laurence talks about then we will need to spend some of that £3M Murphy money on a new striker.

I actually find it quite refreshing that teams have to build their squads now rather than relying on short-term 'emergency' loans - I never much liked those.

Found this interesting analysis on Tom Lawrence following his loan at Rotherham. Sounds like he is best suited to playing behind a main striker or cutting in from the left like Ryan Fraser. Good pace, dribbling ability and an eye for goal. I like the fact he is direct and takes people on, so maybe him and Grant on the wings in a 4-3-3? Apologies if somebody has already posted this, haven't read the other threads. http://foxestrust.co.uk/3513/tom-lawrence-rotherham-loan-report

Mark - I agree with your thoughts on the transfer.

I would like fottballing authorities to go further on the loan issue, by limited teams to three loans max, throughout the course of the season. Just thinking back a few years to the very dark days of RK and PJ, we routinely churned through around 10 plus loanees a year or at least it felt like that. That was truly awful.

I'm plased with the business done today and lets hope for a good surprise or even two tomorrow.

I must admit I find it odd that we are looking to do so much business at the end of the window. It's great! But does that mean the club finally agree the summer strategy wasn't up to par or is it just a case that we got the Murphy money? I'm looking forward to a busy day tomorrow. Hopefully permanent signings.

Let's make a move for Connor Wickham. Looks like he is very low down on pecking order at Crystal Palace with their latest signings. Come on Mick, make it happen!

And nothing shows ambition like a club selling its main striker a few days before the transfer deadline to one of its promotion rivals, after all, does it?!

[tongue in cheek mode off]

I think Mick said all along he was waiting for Prem teams to select their squads and once players were back from Euro's clubs would release their players on loan. Personally think Mick has done some great business this summer. 2 good young loan signings mixed with 2 good young signings and Best to compete upfront. We are never going to sign 3 or 4 million pound players, with the resources we have I think it's been an excellent transfer window with hopefully 1 more to come tomorrow.

So it was McCarthy I saw in Poundland; I did wonder.

We have done well this transfer window

Ward £600K (Very good)
Digby free (Haven't seen much of him)
Grant (Looks good will do well this season once fit)
Best (Will be good for backup/squad player)

All we need now is replacement to Murphy £500k/£2ml then cheap winger will do

Great decision and good luck looks like we could be competitive at last.
Why do we have to have these international breaks got to wait over a week for our next game ugggggg

It's looking good (albeit a bit late!). Wish a right back was on list.

Agreed that loans should be limited and banned between clubs in same division. It was crazy that Che;sea fro example sign loads of players expecting to ship many out and then when they played Everton a couple of seasons ago Loukoko(!) couldn't play against them but scored 20+ goals against everyone else. It can't be right!!

What is it with some fans wanted players back after we have sold them?? Wickham left because he's a big time Charlie and now realising how tough it is in the premiership! He should have stayed at least for another year but he didn't and dropped us like a stone as soon as he saw ££££.. We have moved on from him and I think the 8 million we received was very good business! Hardly made a name for himself unlike Cressy who for me is now worth at least 20 million! I hope for some positive signings 2morro but would rather the champagne spraying Marbella loving Wickham and the rest of his sort stay away from Portman road as we want players who are dedicated to the cause! COYB!!

Connor wickham went because he had an offer of premiership football and if he stayed with us I am sure some would be saying he lacked ambition!!!!

I for 1 would love him back but it will never happen

Conor Wickham would cost around 10-15 million in the current market and would demand 50-60k a week to pay for his Marbella holidays and his 20k bar bills! Get over it! He is never coming back!! Don't even know why he gets mentioned! Might as well say lets go for berahino! It's unrealistic and we need to realise where we are! If TC can get hold of best and he gets off the mark in the first few games it will give him confidence and he can do a job for us! Murphy hardly came with a great scoring record! Best must be given a chance and I for one would rotate him and pitman with ward on the right and Sears/Lawrence on the left! I would like a couple of million spent on a 'ball splitting midfielder' bishop can do it but still struggling with fitness and won't be able to play 2 games in a week! Jonny Williams would be nice but he's also so injury prone! Let's leave it to mick and support whoever comes in! COYB!

Have to say so far this summer McCarthy signings in my mind are of similar ilk other than Best, - Ward, Grant and Lawrence all from Premiership clubs with *potential* - So far Ward looks good with 4 goals already, in time Grant and Lawrence might offer similar qualiy but it is somewhat of a gamble and are these the players in a long season alien to the squad and McCarthys style of play that will get us in the play-offs? Webster from the lower league could easily find himself on the bench with the standard he has to use as a benchmark as Smith. Would love to see PROVEN quality (even if only 1 player) to boost the squad. I wonder with these players now brought in how long it will take MM to find his best starting 11? which worries me...

All the best though Tom on your season here!

Good signing, a little different to what we have and great that he's quite versatile. All in all a positive signing.

Apparently we've tabled a 1 mil bid for Barnsley's right winger Marley Watkins who scored against us in the 1st game of the season
