Trialist Spence Impressing
Thursday, 29th Sep 2016 14:09

Town boss Mick McCarthy says trialist right-back Jordan Spence impressed during Monday’s 2-1 U23s defeat at Bolton Wanderers and could feature for Gerard Nash's side in Sunday’s Premier League Cup tie against Liverpool at Portman Road (KO 1pm).

“I’m going to speak to him, we’ve a game on Sunday and he may well be involved in that,” McCarthy said.

“I haven’t seen the game, but he played very well at Bolton, very well apparently. They played wing-backs and he was one of them and he did well. He’ll be here for the rest of this week and we’ll see.”

Free agent Spence, 26, was released by the MK Dons in the summer having joined them initially on loan in 2013 from West Ham where he came through the youth ranks.

While with the Hammers the Londoner also had spells on loan at Leyton Orient, Scunthorpe, Bristol City and Sheffield Wednesday.

Spence, who is 5ft 11in tall, was capped by England at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 levels.

I was at the game on Monday night and thought he played well and if he plays well against Liverpool on Sunday, I suggest he would be excellent cover for right back. Given our injuries, and no doubt suspensions, a short term contract would seem very sensible in the circumstances.

A specialist right back at ITFC, he's no chance!!

Perhaps now that MM has seen what a proper rb can do (Josh and Spence) he may just accept that Chambers should only be considered at cb! If he gets back to his best then great otherwise MM should be looking for new captain.
Actually if Chambers did secure cb then perhaps MM could try Webster at holding midfield as he's surely got more to offer than Skuglas. He can defend, likes going forward, has pace and can pick out pass, perfect!!

Im assuming Spence would just offer cover in the event of a further exasperated injury crisis

fine as cover but rather Emmanuel was given the chance; yoof!

Encouraging so hopefully he'll impress again on Sunday. We definitely need cover at right back and the fact that he did well as a wing back is interesting in itself.
Like ArnieM, I am even more enthused by Josh Emmanuel's performance on Tuesday. I saw him as one with a lot potential, but felt that he was a bit too raw yet (moreso than Kenlock) and might need to get some game time on loan at a Division 1 or 2 club before breaking into the first team. I know one game doesn't tell us the whole story of a player, but that was a tough one for him to be thrown into, especially when Chambers is rusty as a right sided centre half, and he responded very impressively.

Personally don't care who plays as long as the best right back in the club and at present is Emmanuel and if we sign Spence then may well be him !

We have excellent cover in Chambo but we need someone better than Emmanuel. Mick Mac's gotten a few diamonds in his time, Maybe this dude?

You don't play for England at all those age groups without having something about you. Seems to have lost his way a bit - but clearly there is a footballer there - and who is to say he can't find his feet here?

@pilgrimblue...so let me get this straight, you don't like Chambo at RB because you think he's being played out of position, yet you want to move Webster out of position and into midfield!?

OK. Sure.

we do have a bit of an injury crisis right now so sensible move.

Everyone deserves a 2nd chance but you do wonder why he's not made the most of his other 2nd chances?

Good to know I wasn't the only Town fan in the crowd on Monday, slowerball! Completely agree with your comments on his performance and on whether he should be offered a contract. Thought he looked impressive (as he should have done with such inexperienced team mates), and if he shapes up well again Sunday would be worth signing on a short-term deal. He's also played at centre-back so would offer decent cover for both positions.

Living in Mk I have seen him play many times he is very talented good control very good going forward has a good pass in him for a long while I thought he was the best player Mk not sure what went wrong maybe he has problems but not sure very worth a chance not sure about his defensive skills playing for a average team at MK

No point. As soon as Webster is fit Chambers will be right back. Josh will be cover as ' not ready yet'. So no point in another youngster.

MK Dons season ticket holder friend of mine rates him very highly. Best player for Dons last year and is versatile so can play CB, RB and midfield. Sounds like a no brainer to me but then Mick thinks our central midfield trio are "first class" so he may be better going to Huddersfield.....
