McGoldrick in Ireland Squad
Wednesday, 2nd Nov 2016 10:02

Town striker David McGoldrick has been named in the provisional Republic of Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifier against Austria later this month.

The side led by Martin O'Neill and his assistant, former Town boss Roy Keane, face the Austrians in Vienna on Saturday 12th November.

McGoldrick, who has previously won four caps, so far without scoring, missed out on a place at Euro 2016 having been named in the provisional squad for their pre-tournament friendlies.

Also in the squad are former Town skipper Jonathan Walters and ex-Blues midfielder Conor Hourihane, but Daryl Murphy isn't involved having struggled with a calf injury since his move to Newcastle.

Dundalk winger Daryl Horgan, who was recently watched by Blues scouts, receives his first international call-up.

Republic of Ireland: Darren Randolph (West Ham United), Keiren Westwood (Sheffield Wednesday), Colin Doyle (Bradford City), Ian Lawlor (Manchester City), Danny Rogers (Falkirk, on loan from Aberdeen), Seamus Coleman (Everton), Cyrus Christie, Richard Keogh, Alex Pearce (Derby County), John O'Shea (Sunderland), Ciaran Clark (Newcastle United), Paul McShane (Reading), Shane Duffy (Brighton & Hove Albion), Andy Boyle (Dundalk), Stephen Ward (Burnley), Aiden McGeady (Preston North End, on loan from Everton), James McClean (West Bromwich Albion), Jeff Hendrick (Burnley), James McCarthy (Everton), Stephen Quinn (Reading), Glenn Whelan (Stoke City), Harry Arter (Bournemouth), Eunan O'Kane (Leeds United), David Meyler (Hull City), Stephen Gleeson (Birmingham City), Conor Hourihane (Barnsley), Robbie Brady, Wes Hoolahan (Norwich City), Callum O'Dowda (Bristol City), Jonathan Hayes (Aberdeen), Daryl Horgan (Dundalk), Jonathan Walters (Stoke City), Adam Rooney (Aberdeen), Kevin Doyle (Colorado Rapids), David McGoldrick (Ipswich Town).

Pleased for him, but for selfish reasons I'd rather him have the few weeks off and avoid injury.

I'd like to see Daryl Horgan at Town in Jan.

Horgan plus a target man. No sales in Jan. That would be a successful Jan.

Penguin, what does this have to do with MM and our style of play? We all know what you think. Is he also responsible for famine and natural disasters?

None of the town players should be going away with the national sides particularly McGoldrick and Williams. They are two of the players McCarthy reckons he has been waiting for to get fit and sort our season out. I just hope they don't get injured - again - and once again we are left without their services.

I'm sorry, both McGoldrick and Williams are returning from long injury spells, should their focus not be on the club level and paying back the patience of the club and fans? I get there is honor playing for your country, but when you have been more injured than healthy, you owe your best performance to your club first. It will be infuriating if either one gets injured on the break.

Surely extra playing time at a high level is good for these players it's only going to help them develop and considering they're only just back they're not going to go straight in a play a full 90. Think of the emotional boost that brings to a player being called up for their national team there should only be positivity on these story save your moaning for something else please it's getting boring now...

Given the shortage of fit strikers I reckon McGoldrick will get the opportunity to play either from the start of as a sub.

Agree with the idea of signing Daryl Horgan.

I think game time is good for Didz & Johnny as is the confidence of playing for your country.

Obvious worries re injuries but could happen in training anyway especially with their record.

Need them both as our best players so good luck & fingers crossed.
