Chambers: Probably Our Best Performance of the Season
Monday, 7th Nov 2016 06:00

Delighted skipper and winning goalscorer Luke Chambers believes the Blues played as well as they have at any time this season during Saturday’s 2-1 win at Sheffield Wednesday. The Town captain, who headed his goal three minutes from time, also echoed manager Mick McCarthy’s pre-match message that the Blues will have a more realistic chance of hitting their pre-season target of the play-offs if everyone is pulling in the same direction.

“I think we played really, really well,” Chambers told Ipswich Player HD after Saturday’s match.

“I think we used the ball a lot better. Maybe they let us play or they were a little bit lazy but I think we dominated the game at times, we created chances, especially late in the second half.

“And the fans today were absolutely fantastic and they stuck with us through all of it even when it went to one-all, singing players’ names, the gaffer’s name.

"We’ve got to stick together. I know it’s difficult and frustrating at times, but we all want the best for the football club.”

He added: “It feels brilliant today. It was a massive three points, we needed it because we’ve obviously not had the results we’d have wanted of late.

“We’re delighted, coming off you could see what it meant to all the boys, celebrating [the winning goal] together with all the subs, and even at the end with the gaffer.

“We’ve got to stick together at times like this, we did that today and I felt we gave one of our best performances, if not the best performance, of the season.”

After the Blues and boss McCarthy were given stick by the Town support during last week’s 2-2 home draw with bottom club Rotherham, the Wednesday fans meted out similar treatment to their players at Hillsborough.

Chambers, who hopes Saturday’s victory can jumpstart Town’s season, felt the home supporters’ frustrations had a negative impact on the Owls team.

“Their fans weren’t happy with the way their team played and they weren’t afraid for voice their opinions and it’s very, very difficult and it showed in some of their performances,” the 31-year-old continued.

“Their players were very nervous at times and obviously that didn’t help their performance. We thrived on that a little bit and took belief, especially late in the second half.

“We know how fit we are, we know we’re a fit team and if we continue to stay in games, especially with the so-called better teams, I think we’ve always got a chance, especially as we’ve got a bit of pace on the break.

“To go 1-0 up the way we did, it was a great goal from Tom Lawrence, I thought he was absolutely different class.

“I thought Wardy was fantastic as well, and getting Searsy up top and Didzy back in the team is a massive, massive boost for us.

“I think you’ve seen the team today which performed very well and obviously we’ve got Bish coming back, who is getting his minutes in, but he’s making a big contribution to the team.

“Overall I’m absolutely delighted and I think we thoroughly deserved the three points in the end.”

Regarding his winner, his second vital headed goal of the season, he added: “It was a great delivery from Wardy sticking it in. Berra once again missed the target but thankfully I was there to get him out of jail again!

“I like getting in the box and in the last few games I’ve been thrown up for set pieces and I like to score from open play as well. I’m just trying to get in and help the team.

“But it’s not about me scoring, whoever scored you would have seen the same reaction because at the end of the day we’ve come up here, it took five and a half hours, we stuck together, [on Friday] night we all played pool together.

“At times like this it would be easy for everyone to have little cliques and stuff like that but that’s never happened, especially since I’ve been at the football club.

“The message is for everyone to stick together, but the boys especially, and I think they did over this weekend.

“Now we can look to a couple of days off and look forward to the international break and then look forward to Forest in two weeks’ time.”

Town, who face their skipper's former club Nottingham Forest and managerless QPR at home in their next two games, go into the break in 15th, five points off the play-offs and seven points above the relegation zone.

Yes it was good to score and win away and see some slightly better football.
But lets not kid ourselves, McCarthy has set the bar so low anything would have been an improvement.
McCarthy's typical self justification does not wash it with me - I still think he should go and Town would be a bitter team for it.
Sorry, I would also change the right back and captain.

That's exactly right chambo we've got to stick together.
To beat weds away is a great result because they are a good team.
We have the players to progress as key players are back from injury.
We have a chance to climb the table now. COYB

Have to agree with most of what he says. Then again he's hardly gonna come out and slate the team/fans or manager. I say lets see where we are coming Jan. Then hopefully get 1 or 2 to make a big impact.

I don't think anyone doesn't believe in the team ethos and player commitment thats football. But we seam to win in spite of McC tactics and selection. Personally I'm going to need to see a long run of results before I'm anywhere near being convinced he is the man to continue to lead our football club!

Important thing was we got the 3 points. 2 home wins in a row now and we can put talks of relegation to bed.

Great win and a superb team Performance. Shame we have 2 weeks until the next game but at least we have two home games on the spin. It's also pleasing to read how supportive the supporters were. It's not plain sailing being a fan but it's results like Saturday that make it all worth while. Onwards and upwards.

Went to game and was pleased with much improved display playing away in front of 25,000 passionate home fans and matching them was encouraging so keep this up and you never know?.
3 crucial home games coming and now looking forward to them.
Liked the Jonny Williams song to Karma Chameleon music the chorus bit repeated "He comes and goes etc" fits in with his travels back and forth to us.
Well done the hardcore away fans.

I would take this with a pinch of salt.

He is simply tripping out cliches. Boring!
I'm not sure he's very bright.

Sorry but one swallow does not make a summer.
There were a lot of angry supporters at Rotherham and one good performance isn't going to win over the masses. If we're all in this together then maybe Mick should stop being so disrespectful to supporters in interviews. The rift between the club and the fans has never been greater. I've only ever known the kind of atmosphere at Rotherham towards the very end of manager's reigns. Mick isn't going anywhere soon so he needs to start building bridges before he divides us all.

Yes skipper we all need to pull together, Saturday has given us long suffering fans hope for the rest of the season as long as this is kept up which starts with the manager and players I've known the atmosphere inside Portman Road make the hairs on my neck stand on end, but then exciting and passionate football was on offer, and we fans loved it so over to you stop the drivel and perform!!!!

'Probably Our Best Performance of the Season' - which isn't saying much. Time will be the test of all this. I still hear the sound of paper being placed over cracks.

This from the guy who stood swearing at fans last year, had a real go when he scored a few weeks ago and a manager who takes every opportunity to take a swipe at the fans. Sort yourselves out first guys and you may then have a chance of getting some support.

Don't no why everybody is complaining. It's not that bad. Quite entertains at times, border line edge of the seat stuff. Long may it continue. Up the town and in mick we trust.

This is Dinos piece with Chambers name on it.

All the stick together and nicknames b0ll0cks, this changes nothing. As pointed out, a manager slagging off the fans at every opportunity ....get out now before the ground is empty.

OK I am as fickle a fan as any and a win was just great news and much needed----without it the table would not have looked very good.

Nice break now and then 2 very winnable (on paper) home games and if we could do the business then things may look so much different by the end of the month.

Lets wait and see.

I wonder if penguinblue et al are ever happy, apart from when droning on negatively about MM, the team and club in general. We had our best team out on Saturday and we won - enjoy it for once!

Also to be fair. Our winner was a well worked goal. You can clearly see how good it was from the replay.

YES!it was a good result, but let's not paper over the cracks.Wednesday were well below there game and we only had two shots on goal. However it was still great to get 3 points nevertheless.

MM needs to stick to this formation and not play too defensive, either home or away.We have the players capable of winning games,so Mick ditch the boring football into touch and attack, remember"it's the best form of attack".!! So they say.

I was at the game Saturday and whilst it was a better performance there is still the tendency to hoof the ball as soon as its received. If only players would just take a second to control the ball and look up for a team mate instead of just hoofing it we would have made even more chances. That said a win is a win and a much improved performance.

Personally I am never happy droning on about MM, it grieves me that in my opinion he has changed the whole ethos of the club, setting up teams not to lose instead of trying to win. I drone on about the team as it is a reflection of him, I am not happy to do that either, I would rather be singing my heart & voice out in support of my team. As for the club it to is reflection of MM, the sound bites from players and other staff are just like MM mouthpieces. I will be extremely happy when MM leaves and this club starts regains the prestige it had in football, giving youth a reasonable chance to blossom and progress. Name one youth product apart from Bishop who has been given a run of games, please don't mention Smith as he was not a youth player when MM arrived.

Mathiemagic- we tended to overplay from the back in the first half and got caught doing this. Most of the long balls were from Webster who has the quality to knock a decent long pass- no complaints
BOTH Skuse and Bishop were prepared to get the ball off the back 4 on the half turn which was a change - pass and move rather than pass and hide or just hide.. I thought we were good and looked to play football when we could.
It is no coincidence that the last 2 performances (Rotherham first half anyway) has coincided with our best player being available again. Should McGoldrick fall down again then the belief of players will ebb- with No money available he is the key.

Tyrone Mings was 20 when McCarthy played him- does he count as a youth team player?
