High Court Rules in Town's Favour Tuesday, 28th Feb 2017 15:39 A High Court judge has ruled that Suffolk Constabulary should repay Town for overcharging for matchday policing in the second part of the ongoing litigation between the club and the police.
In July last year Mr Justice Green ruled that the police were entitled to charge Town for policing two roads bordering the ground on matchdays (Portman Road and Sir Alf Ramsey Way), a ruling which the club were granted permission to appeal. "
In his latest ruling, which concerns policing outside the stadium and those two roads, Mr Justice Green has found that Suffolk Constabulary had no power to charge the club and that Town have a right to recover the sums they paid plus simple interest, although covering a limited period rather than the extended time the Blues argued.
A Suffolk Constabulary spokesman told TWTD: “This is a complex judgement clarifying the time limitations and liabilities that can be applied by either party, depending on the result of the appeal by Ipswich Town Football Club against the original High Court judgement last year.
“The appeal is scheduled to be heard on 27/28th June 2017. Due to the ongoing legal process, it is not appropriate for the Constabulary to comment any further at this time.”
Town told TWTD in a statement: “This is part of an ongoing legal process and we will not be making any comment at this time.”

I hazard a guess that all those 'supporting' the Club's stance on this would be the first to bleat if there were no Police presence around Portman Road, and they had a problem - a 999 call would be as near to them as the minus button invariably is. To a Millionaire + Owner - £200k is peanuts and should never be questioned. Why should the rest of the local taxpayers, who most likely have no interest in Portman Road, or Football , have policing taken off their area / street to attend Football matches anyway ...... ??? If it's paid for appropriately by the Club it makes it somewhat more acceptable - just remember that Suffolk Constabulary are working to SEVERELY restricted budgets too - and some of you have the audacity to continually make excuses for McCarthy ..... ?? Get real people - and support your local Police - you never know when YOU will need them yourselves. | | |
