Former Liverpool, Leeds, Wigan and Cardiff Man Joins Town as Club Secretary
Sunday, 2nd Apr 2017 17:19

Former Liverpool, Leeds United, Wigan Athletic and Cardiff City club secretary Stuart Hayton is joining the Blues in the same job from Monday, taking over from Sally Webb, who is moving to a new role at Portman Road.

Hayton has most recently been working at Cardiff, who he joined after a spell of 15 months at Leeds which ended in September last year - the day before the Blues’ 1-0 defeat at Elland Road - reportedly having been relieved of his duties at the turbulent West Yorkshire club.

Prior to that he had two seasons with Liverpool, having spent more than 20 years at Wigan, 12 as club secretary.

Webb has been with the Blues since 2000 and succeeded David Rose, who was inducted into Town’s hall of fame on Friday, as club secretary three years later.

“It’s been a privilege and a pleasure and I shall enjoy staying on in my new role,” she told Saturday’s Life’s a Pitch on BBC Radio Suffolk.

“I’m staying on in a regulatory role alongside [managing director] Ian Milne and the new club secretary.

“The new club secretary is very, very well respected in the industry and we’ll welcome him on Monday.

“He has recently been at Cardiff but his main role was at Wigan for some 12 years. He’s worked in the Premier League, he’s worked in the Football League, he’s worked in UEFA competition, he’s a really very, very well-versed gentleman.”

I am so excited about this announcement, it makes up for all the crap we have put up with recently. The feel good factor is returning at PR with this signing.

I wondered how there could be anything in this story to moan about, but sure enough, there's already several people managed to find something to have a moan at...

I wonder how much this may have to do with missing out on signing a centre forward in the January transfer window. Was it down to poor admin? Personally I think you should be doing business much earlier but do feel that the poor lady maybe being made a scapegoat for poor management!

Forgive my ignorance but what are the principle roles of a club secretary?

Gcon

Sally talked about her job and what it entails on Life's a Pitch on Saturday, from 46mins 30secons: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04wtz8p

And Thijssenstricks, her change of role has nothing to do with the failure to sign players in January!

My guess is that the club is up for sale and this guy will be the continuity during the change over of ownership.

That's what MM was hinting at when he referred to a total overhaul in the close season.

Well done Sally on 17 years of hard graft, especially dealing with the last 3 managers.

In the 'i' today Ian Herbert's column shows our new secretaries illustrious past when working for Cellino, when Neil Redfern was sacked his partner was sacked too. She won her unfair dismissal case, but can't find work.
