Blues and Tykes Eyeing Isgrove
Thursday, 15th Jun 2017 11:47

Town and Barnsley are understood to be among the clubs showing interest in winger Lloyd Isgrove following his release by Southampton at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old, who made only two appearances for the Saints during 2016/17, both in cup competitions, was previously linked with a loan move to the Blues in January and we understand has been on manager Mick McCarthy’s radar for some time.

Born in Yeovil, Isgrove came through the Southampton academy and in total made four starts and five sub appearances for the Hampshire club, although his only Premier League appearance was as a sub early in the 2014/15 campaign.

While with Saints the 5ft 8in tall wideman, who has won one full cap with Wales in addition to six appearances at U21 level, spent spells on loan at Peterborough, Sheffield Wednesday and the Tykes, who he helped to win promotion via the 2015/16 League One play-off final.

Isgrove, who came on as a sub in Town’s FA Cup tie against Southampton at St Mary’s in January 2015, has won the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy both with Posh and Barnsley.

Meanwhile, another player likely to be on Blues boss McCarthy’s list of potential summer midfield recruits is West Ham youngster Josh Cullen.

We understand Town have kept tabs on the 21-year-old, who spent last season on loan in League One with Bradford, having also ended the previous campaign with the Bantams.

The Hammers could be ready to send the Westcliff-on-Sea-born Republic of Ireland U21 international out on loan to a Championship club during 2017/18.

Decent little player. Good age too. Plus we need wingers! The eadt say we've put in a player-plus-cash offer for Danny Ward... won't believe it till it's reported on here but maybe Evans is finally backing Mick financially? I've always said I'll judge Mick if he's given the tools to get us up. Now he needs to deliver the goods. Onwards and upwards... I hope!

No disrespect but if we can't compete financially with Barnsley we need to shut the lights off on our way out !!

Great little player and has pace to burn. If we do get him, at least it won't be a loan too. Surely Ipswich are a bigger attraction than Barnsley!? Don't know anything about Josh Cullen, but I'd rather see our own youngsters being played that loaning one. Dozzell, Benyu, McDonnell, Nydam and Bishop are all there, so use them and integrate them into the team!

@rayman

This farfetched-sounding Danny Ward rumor, ehmm what edition of EADT is this in mate (cause I can't seem to spot in the online version)?

As for Mr. Isgrove ...thanks but no thanks! Not saying he is a bad football player by any means, but as a winger there is NOOOOO goals in him for crying out loud (2 in a total of 64 games in the FA, of which the wast majority was in League 1!) ..... and we at ITFC very OBVIOUSLY need not only more goals & creativity over-all, but to have them & it coming from a wider variety of position players , with the larger midfield probably being the most sorely lacking!

Another winger whom Mick won't play?

Never seen Isgrove play but if he's survived to the age of 24 through such a good academy as Southampton's then he must have something about him. Interesting to see Josh Cullen linked. He's a very talented midfielder and highly rated at West Ham.

Would love to see this guy play for us. Rated him for a long time.

The main thing standing in between him and us is Marcus Pleban's purse strings, but trust me those strings are knotted so tight that it would take 100 boy scouts all weekend to get anywhere near as much as the first fiver!
The only thing it seems will ever tempt Marcus to cut open those dastardly purse strings is if somebody is much nearer the age of 30 and preferably after a spell of injuries!

Not the worst signing we could make... probably not on the cards though.

We do have some talented youngsters of our own that deserve a shot. Give our homegrown lads a decent run out, throw them into the mix and I'm sure they wouldn't disappoint. They, after all, have a vested interest in doing well for ITFC, the club they call home! They'd be up for every game.

Reckon this would be good for us - decent background/experience, winger, not a loan, young .... fits the infamous "5 point plan" & hopefully Mick will play him !!
Agree with others re other more central midfield options - would like to see us really persist with our own youngsters. We seem to have a few in that position so rotate them, give them a chance one by one/2 in a strong team & not just chuck them all in to a League Cup game together. We may then see some real progress in terms of quality of squad & quality of play ...... as well as linking back to our roots in producing our own players.
It started last year with Emanuell & Kenlock so please Mick give us something to be proud of again.

In competition with Barnsley? We only win transfers when we are in competition with the likes of York City.
