Ward Reveals Conversations With Town Prior to Cardiff Move
Sunday, 25th Jun 2017 13:07

Former Rotherham striker Danny Ward has outlined his reasons for joining Cardiff City and revealed that he spoke to Town before opting for a reunion with his former Millers boss Neil Warnock in Wales.

The 26-year-old’s £1.6 million switch to the Bluebirds, which had been expected for a number of weeks, was finally confirmed on Friday.

As reported at the time, Town initially made a bid for Ward in January with reports that they had made a what was described as a "substantial offer" during the summer emerging during the week.

“I’d worked with Neil Warnock before and loved my time at Rotherham with him,” Ward explained to the Sheffield Star. "He was brilliant, and so were Blacky [Warnock’s assistant Kevin Blackwell] and Jeppo [coach Ronnie Jepson].

“I knew a few of the Cardiff lads as well. Everything seemed to fit. That’s what swayed me to go for Cardiff rather than Ipswich.

“Obviously, Cardiff is a long, long way away, but when you know some of the people down there and you know the manager can get teams promoted because he’s done it in the past, it makes moving easier. It just seemed like a great opportunity.

“I had a couple of conversations with Ipswich. But Cardiff were in and the fact Neil was there was a big thing because we’d worked so well together before.

“He kept Rotherham up in 2016 and I know what he’s about. I’m good friends with Jon Stead and Paddy Kenny, who’ve worked with him before and done great things with him.

“They don’t have a bad word to say about him, and I’d experienced that myself. That’s why Cardiff was the one for me.”

It seems likely that Ward’s conversations with the Blues came prior to Town securing the £1 million signing of Joe Garner from Rangers.

£600,000 more than Marcus is prepared to pay by the looks of it! How many 1 million bids have we had turned down, it's ridiculous! There's not a 1 million glass transfer ceiling at Ipswich, it's a rock hard concrete ceiling! How many teams in the Championship don't have a single player that didn't cost more than 1 million to sign? Simple answer, the ones that don't will usually be the ones struggling for points and excitement!

Can't argue about what he said there, it seems that even if we offered the same amount he would've chosen Cardiff. Don't think this is anything to do with ME or the club. Let's just crack on with other signings then!!

Midastouch- We offered 1m plus a player (assume Pitman) and Rotherham preferred our offer. It was Ward who chose Cardiff nothing to do with our bid. Shame I would have liked to see him at Town, but credit where it's due we are being a lot more ambitious this window. Hopefully more signings to come!

But if we offered more than Cardiff then Rotherham might of twisted his arm some to come here instead. He looked class against us last season. That said, in this day of player power clubs don't just sell players to another club (as in the old days) and then tell the player you're off to such and such! My main point however is we're never going to attract decent players to compete properly on the cheap! Occasionally we'll strike gold like we did with Mings, but more often than not the teams that pay peanuts end up in trouble! I'm not saying we should spend our way into administration, but we do need to show some ambition as if not why bother! The owner is worth a lot of money but he's always trying to fudge things on the cheap, certainly at least since Keane spent a pile of his wonga on the Sunderland Reserve team! :-)

And remember the promise to reinvest a fair portion of the Mings money, what happened there? Surely if you sell a player for 6 or 7 million you could reinvest 2 million back into the playing staff and then use the rest to plug the ever-growing financial gap, or pay back some of the interest on the debt to Marcus! We need at least a reasonable amount of ambition if not it becomes oh-so pointless!

Obviously some of you are happy that we are spending no more or less on players than we were in 1994 then! If we carry on like this I dread to think where we'll be in another 23 years from now!

Be honest everyone. If you had amased a three quarters of a billion empire, there would have been plenty of VERY small gambles along the way. These are just that.Small gambles.
Be confident that he'll have one BIG gamble up his sleeve , because all successful businessmen do once in a decade. And Marcus....that time IS NOW.

Personally I'd prefer to have one Rolls Royce rather than 5 Mondeos! ;-)
It's about quality, not quantity. We've had way too many mediocre signings for years now, yet when you add up all their wages (think of loads of also-ran players that only turned out twice a year for the cups), you could have used those combined to pay the wages of one decent player that would have a fair chance of getting 20 goals a season! You can have 4 strikers that might get 4 or 5 goals each a season, or 1 striker that might be capable of getting 20 by himself. Take your pick! Anyway, I'm sounding like a broken record now, sorry to have plastered this page to oblivion, but I just badly want to see us compete rather than exist!

We were never favourites to sign either ward or watkins. The trick is to have a hat full of targets and move on quickly.

Oh well, it looks like money was not the main factor here. Which ever way you look at it M.E is prepared to splash some cash, so there's will be no complaints from myself towards him on this matter.

I feared that this sort of thing would happen. Imagine that you are a quality footballer in demand, why should you come to us? There was the televised Lincoln debacle, the fight against relegation, Mick McCarthy staying against the odds and the majority of the fans wanting him out; are we really that attractive? The only way that I can see us tempting quality is to offer the sort of wages we can't afford. We should have got rid of McCarthy immediately after Lincoln.

He is a quality player that I've been saying we should sign, as he's just the sort of player required and a MM character. However it isn't a surprise to see him link up with Warnock and to be honest 1.6 million from relegated Rotherham is slightly steep.

@ BlueandTruesince82
Do you think we should keep the transfer limit to £1 million max even though we were spending that on players back in 1994? Yes or No?
Football is moving on and we are getting left behind.
I realise it's unrealistic for us to compete against teams that have huge Premier League parachute payments, however, we still need to show a a reasonable level of ambition if not we may as well just throw in the towel now. If you were the chairman and you were worth a reported £700 or £800 million would you be prepared to spend 2 or 3 million on a proven striker at this level? If the answer is yes why are you having a pop at me? I'm just frustrated that we never seem to sign anybody worth shouting about! You said you weren't happy with Lafferty, so wouldn't you prefer we signed somebody more proven, i.e. somebody that would cost probably at least 2 million? Or are you happy for us just to carry on picking up cheapos every season and get left further and further behind! If that's what you'd prefer you'd have to accept players like Lafferty as you aren't going to get much better than that for free!

I rarely believe the "I really wanted to link up with Warnock" or whoever. I guess Cardiff probably offered him a better contract.

@ itfccymru
You say "we are being a lot more ambitious this window", so you are satisfied with just the 1 signing so far? Other teams in the Championship have spent loads more than us already (and not just ones that have come down from the Premier League), yes we're showing a tiny bit more ambition but it's still nowhere near enough at the level yet for us to be competitive next season. Trust me nothing would make me happier to be proven wrong on this but I'm worried for us next season. Joe Garner might do the business but what if he doesn't? Where will that leave us? The gates are dropping like a stone. I can't see buying just 1 player for 1 million is going to make a huge difference, we need more than that to remain competitive.
It frustrates the hell out of me as I'm surrounded by Norwich fans here in deepest-darkest Norfolk and I get stacks of stick. When you live behind enemy lines and you get the amount of aggro I get throughout a season you can't help but pray for some quality signings more than most! They are literally laughing their heads off at us, I should know as I get it week in and week out. Everywhere I go I get 9-2, and when was the last time you beat us, and so on and so on! I dream for that to change, but unless Marcus dips into his pocket we're going to remain in their wing mirrors or worse! I pray for the balance of power to shift but I fear it's not going to under this regime! They're signing young hungry players from Germany, meanwhile we have put our eggs in Joe Garner's basket. Well I hope he can deliver the goods or those Budgies will be cracking green and yellow Budgerigar eggs on my windows all next next season! :-(

I'm disappointed that we didn't get Ward because I think he is exactly the type of centre forward we need.
I'd be further disappointed if it was the case that we moved on to Garner as a substitute for Ward after those discussions, as I quite liked the idea of them being a partnership & was still hopeful of it until he finally signed for Cardiff. The fact that we are now being linked with Lafferty might suggest that we were indeed after the 2 of them & now we have turned to Lafferty as the substitute for Ward.
in any event, I do believe Ward when we says that Warnock & his team were key to his decision. Many players follow managers who they have done well with before & he knows how he is likely to be played & treated. Better the devil you know.

Midas, none of that has anything to do with why wsrd didnt sign. He wanted to play for Warnock. That's it. Rotherham can't force him to do anything.

We bid well over a million for him Jan.

I'm not having a pop I am merely saying that money had nothing to do with it. Our bid was accepted he wanted to go to Cardiff.
