Town Hoping Waghorn Can Face Luton Monday, 7th Aug 2017 09:55
Town are hoping to confirm the signing of Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn in time for the 27-year-old to make his Blues debut in the Carabao Cup at Luton tomorrow.
Reports that Town had agreed a fee of around £1 million with the Glasgow giants for the former Leicester man emerged last night with the Blues expecting to get the deal done today, although claims that he is already undergoing a medical at Portman Road are thought to be premature.
With more paperwork involved in cross-border deals, including international clearance, it might take a little longer for the move to be confirmed - as was the case with Joe Garner’s switch from Ibrox earlier in the summer - than the club would ideally like and it may well be that the paperwork will be rubber-stamped too late for Waghorn to face the Hatters.
However, TWTD understands it’s a switch which is all but certain to go through. Town agreed the fee with Rangers on Friday with talks regarding the move having continued over the weekend.
Blues boss Mick McCarthy is likely to comment on the situation when he speaks to the media at 1pm in a press conference which is not being shown live by TWTV or elsewhere at the club’s request. However, we will be live-blogging the main news on the TWTD Forum.
South Shields-born Waghorn came through the youth system at local club Sunderland - who are understood to have been keen to re-sign him this summer - and made a handful of Premier League appearances while at the Stadium of Light, as well as having spells on loan at Charlton and Leicester before joining the Foxes on a permanent basis for £3 million in August 2010.
The 5ft 10in tall former England U19 and U21 international was loaned to Hull City, Millwall and Wigan while a Leicester player before joining the Latics full-time on a free transfer in April 2014.
He moved on to Rangers in July 2015, signing a three-year deal. While with the Ibrox club Waghorn made 63 starts and 15 sub appearances, scoring 44 goals, 16 of them last season.
During 2015/16 Waghorn, who can also operate in wide areas, helped Rangers to carry off the Scottish Championship and Scottish Challenge Cup. He was also named in the PFA Scotland Team of the Year for the Championship that season.
Waghorn was left out of the 18 for yesterday's 2-1 victory over Motherwell, the Glasgow giants' opening league fixture of the season.
Previously he started the first leg of the Europa League qualifier against Niedercorn from Luxembourg at end of June but was left out of the second match the following week.
The Rangers squad is currently in a state of flux with manager Pedro Caixinha, who was appointed in March, looking to offload a number of players in order to bring in his own recruits.
The Blues have already benefited from Rangers' summer fire sale by signing Joe Garner, the scorer of a debut winner in Saturday's 1-0 victory over Birmingham, back in June.

Definitely a Mick type of player who won't give defenders any time. Good, strong, quick player so lets get it done! Only think, is Garner looks to be our main striker and I feel Mick will play both Sears and Waghorn over Didzy, which makes me think where does it leave him? On his day, Didzy is a guy who can really make things tick!
Also, be interesting to see how our defence will cope with a team that scored 8 on Saturday - especially knowing our great record under Mick in the cup...
If we can use McGoldrick more sparingly (e.g. bring his trickery off the bench against tiring defenders who've been battered for an hour by Garner and Waghorn), rather than having to carry a lot of the load, we'll get the best results and keep him fitter for longer.
@iaintaylorx, unfortunately McGoldrick is very injury prone, thus we need to move on! If he manages a prolonged spell of fitness it's a headache the Manager I'm sure will be more than happy with!
It's beginning to look as though the season might be more hopeful than we all thought. I'm quite excited by this and have always admired the lad. Lets get it done and get behind the lads, they need to have good support now for a few months to lift the team and keep them up there.
His highlight reel really reminds of of Daryl Murphy's magical season. He loves to cut back in on that deadly left foot of his. Looks like a real handful - massive signing!
Hope we can seal this soon, looks like a good strong striker and can score goals :D And if he can play out wide as well I don't think we should go for No-One else ;) Just maybe get that lad from Leicester in on loan. Be interesting to see what number he gets as he has been #33 at Rangers for the past 2/3 seasons but that's Barts number
Waghorn and garner upfront could be a good partnership with didz just behind as I feel didz could be a good CAM as he showed in a little spell of the game at Col Utd
Had to read the headline twice. Quality player. Remember him when we played against a good Wigan side in 14/15 season. He was in that team. Be great if he signed.
Let's hope we have a real go at Luton. It's a good test of what the bench can do, and several of the players could do with an extra 90 minutes but I'm hoping it's a strong starting 11 .
Good signing, we need beefcake, get Didzy in midfield, he can hold play up and spray accurately to feed the men up front, then keep Skuse on the bench instead.
Reading the Rangers' comments they are astonished at this deal, they can't believe they're making any cash for him at all! Their fans say his confidence is shot. But I spend a fair bit of time up north of the border and I can imagine them being very demanding and getting on his back quickly. Gers think of themselves as a Champions League club so can see how he hasn't lived up to their expectations. Also everything up there based on the old firm, so if he hasn't scored or done damage in one of those fixtures he'll be seen as not up to it. The Scottish league is a funny one, punctuated with some quality but in the main, really poor.
Hopefully Mick and a transfer, and a good team behind him, can give him a reboot as looking at his goals reel, he has all the attributes.
