McCarthy Makes Scouting Trip to Sweden
Monday, 21st Aug 2017 11:44

Town boss Mick McCarthy was spotted in Sweden watching Djurgåden beat Halmstad 2-1 yesterday afternoon, presumably as he continues his search for an additional centre-half.

Potential targets in the two squads include visitors defender Marcus Johansson, 23, who looks a not unlikely candidate as his contract is up at the end of the Swedish season, and fellow Halmstad man Marcus Mathiesen, a 21-year-old Dane.

The home squad included veteran former West Brom defender Jonas Olsson, 34, who returned to Sweden at the end of last season.

Djurgåden’s Norwegian defender Niklas Gunnarsson, 26, at one time played for Hibs, although is primarily a right-back, while 23-year-old Swede Jacob Une Larsson was also in action for the home side.

Another possible target may have been Djurgåden’s 27-year-old defender Marcus Hansson, although he wasn’t involved yesterday.

McCarthy is looking for another central defender with skipper Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Adam Webster all currently sidelined.

12th man, why not change your name to captain obvious?
Good commitment from Mick on his day off, looks happy in that snap and so he should be!

Marcus Hansson looks likely target. Looking to play football in England. Know next to nothing about the player though (apart from a google search).

Djurgården are probably going to end up second to Malmö in the league, while Halmstad are most likely going to be relegated, which may mean the two players mentioned in that team might be wanting to move on?
Djurgården:
Niklas Gunnarson: tough Norwegian, winner mentality, good age.
Jacob Une Larsson: has been troubled by injuries recently, but said to be on the mend. Don't know that much about him, but he has made his debut in the Swedish U-21 and did ok by all accounts.
Marcus Hansson: Another one who's been out injured, but on his way back. Can play both central defence or midfield.
Halmstad:
Marcus Johansson: Centre back from their Academy. Don't know much about him, but a good age (23).
Marcus Mathiesen. Young Dane (20) signed from FC Copenhagen, where he was in their Academy. Rather suggests he didn't make it in the bigger club?
From my point of view, it would be fun to have a Swede or (another) Dane in the club.

This is far from ideal really, given the urgency of our situation.

If we do manage to belatedly bring in a centre half from Sweden, we could do without taking another 4 hours to put him together with a Allen key.

There isn't much info on him. Saw his FIFA 16 card (so reliable lol) and he stood out in physical strength, stamina and fitness. Seems like a Berra kind of player, or am I wrong?

Can't always rely on players from England.

Players from abroad might be better who knows.
I am sure Mick will find someone soon...

If there in the first team, it would suprisingly suggest a permanent signing...

I think we Need 2 new CBs. One permanent, one on loan til January. That would mean our four FBs/WBs could be just that while still providing cover and our three current CBs could have time to recover fully.

I have been saying for some time that we need a Berra replacement. However, I may be wrong. If Knudsen can do the job, against Brentford he seemed to suggest that he could, why sign someone just to make up numbers?

Probably not it but worth mentioning. Former West Bromwich defender Jonas Olsson also plays for Djurgårdens IF. After several years in England he headed back home early this year. However there has been rumours he isn't satisfied and that a loan move to Lugano was on it's way. If it's true, Jonas surely would like to go on loan, Djurgården would like to get rid of his high wage and Ipswich desperately needs one or two CB. He certainly got the experience and Mick likes that. Could be a panic loan move until January.

Bit concerned about Websters ankle. Hope it is not a long term absence

Not sure MM would want to bring in a loan from a foreign league. Best to have a loan from your own country as they will be more acclimatised to it. So it could well be a permanent signing.

colchesters C,B WOULD BE WORTH A LOOK.

Jonas Olsson would be good addition. And no need to acclimatise. He has played in the England nine seasons and in the Premier League longer than any of the players in the squad.

Which ones are 'hairy arsed' though which was the criteria Mick mentioned the other day lol.

Seriously though agree with Blue Swede, and although Olsen is 34, think our Manager is looking for experience, and a good talker;as he also said in that interview that he didn't believe in playing teenagers at centre back.
