Blues Renew Interest in Goldson
Wednesday, 30th Aug 2017 14:57

Town have renewed their interest in Brighton defender Connor Goldson, according to various reports, TWTD having revealed that the Blues had made an approach for the 24-year-old a fortnight ago.

Town are said to be closing in on the loan addition of the Wolverhampton-born central defender ahead of the transfer window’s closure at 11pm on Thursday.

We understand that Premier League new boys Brighton are keen to bring someone else in before making Goldson, who has also been interesting Sheffield United, available for loan.

Goldson recently returned to action having undergone heart surgery in March but has made only one Carabao Cup appearance for the Seagulls this season.

The 6ft 3in defender started his career with Shrewsbury, during which time he spent a spell on loan at Cheltenham, before joining Brighton, to whom he is contracted for three more years, in August 2015.

Since moving to the Amex he has made 32 starts and three sub appearances, scoring twice.

Town boss Mick McCarthy, a close friend of Brighton manager Chris Hughton, is looking to add another centre-half to his squad ahead of tomorrow’s deadline with skipper Luke Chambers, Tommy Smith and Adam Webster all currently sidelined.

McCarthy recently made a scouting trip to Stockholm with Djurgåden's former West Brom defender Jonas Olsson, 34, claimed to be his target by some sections of the Swedish media.

Over the weekend the Blues were reported to be in talks with Nottingham Forest regarding a loan move for centre-half Jack Hobbs, 29, with the clubs said to be negotiating what proportion of his wages Town might pay during his proposed spell at Portman Road.

We are going very slow on the CBS transfer front. Looking a bit ominous

we need more than one CB in. this guy is a top prospect and better than chambers or smith, we do need a left footed CB also in case the injuries are longer than currently anticipated

He will do nicely. We have had such a good window so far but we need to make sure a deal is done on a CB before tomorrow. I do however believe that Knudsen could be challenging for his place as a CB when everyone is back fit after his recent performances; he is definitely as CB as opposed to a LB! - We are going to be spoilt for choice in a few months time when all are back

Goldson looks a sensible signing, and hopefully just as good as the guy Norwich have reportedly splashed £3.5M on with big wages (£40K a week at Newcastle apparently).

I understand a loan to cover the injuries, although a permanent signing would be a boost as it is normal to have four centre backs in a squad (last season we had five with Berra and Digby, and six when Taylor joined). While Chambers is rarely injured, Smith and Webster have been out for a long time. I know Knudsen and Spence can play in a back three, but we need a tall, strong central defender in the middle and two if we want to go 4-4-2.

I agree with Mark over the number of centre backs. They are always likely to pick up injuries and cards so plenty of cover is needed. Lets hope the Wolf makes the grade this season.

Two months out is a long time in this game, so we need to get a deal for a CB (preferrably two) done and dusted in the next twenty-four hours. We've had a great start to the season so lets not ruin it by making do. I guess the other Teams concerned are waiting to seal their own deals before releasing a player.

I personally think we need two or three signings. Two being more realistic. Like this guy, but not convinced we should be bringing in Loans. Still a fan of signing permanent additions to build a squad, with one or two loanees to supplement. We have those Loans already.

The bit that worries me in all due respect, is the heart surgery. Maybe something of nothing. Just a concern

12th_Man the world is not nigh, there is light at the end of the tunnel and finally, we've had a really good offseason for once in many a year. We should be joyous (ish), not despondent

We've been linked to only a handful of defenders, I don't remember us being linked to Jonny Evans as you claim?

Not sure why need to compare with Norwich numbskull signings Mark...
