Folami Nets Late Winner for U23s at Wednesday
Saturday, 2nd Sep 2017 14:25

Ben Folami netted a late winner as Town’s U23s beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at Hillsborough this afternoon, on-loan Manchester City winger Bersant Celina having given the Blues the lead in the first half.

Celina, playing his second U23s game in five days as he looks to get minutes under his belt having been hampered by illness in the early weeks of the season, curled home a brilliant 20-yard freekick before Wednesday equalised through a Lucas Joao penalty in the second half.

But Australian striker Folami, one of the players to make his senior debut at Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup and a scorer in Tuesday’s 3-2 U23s victory over Sheffield United, grabbed the winner in the final minute.

Midfielder Tom Adeyemi played 80 minutes in his second appearance for the U23s as he continues his comeback after illness and a calf injury, while Danny Rowe was also in the side.

The U23s, who are coached by Gerard Nash, have now won three of their first four games this season.

TWTD user Sheffield Tractor was at the game and has written a blog giving his thoughts on the game.

U23s: Wright, D Crowe, Webber, Adeyemi, Woolfenden, C Smith, Rowe, McLoughlin, Morris, Celina, Folami. Subs: Blanchfield, Ndaba, Dobra.

Well done lads. I love watching you play proper footy. Cant wait to see you all back at FPR in the U23's and in the first team. You are all good enough!

A great start to the season for the U23s. It feels like finally we have some quality young players coming through after years of having hardly any, and that gives fans plenty to look forward to.

Celina for the first team please Mick. Can't argue with much this season as we're doing a lot better than I expected but I have to say I'm puzzled why Celina hasn't started more games for the 1st team as he's clearly a high-quality operator.

Great result for the under 23s. Great to see Blanchfield return today and get playing time.

Good result. I'd so much prefer to see more of these players given a chance in the first team squad, if only as an unused sub, than an Everton youngster. Just my personal opinion.

rob the snob : from a previous article :
Luke Hyam played his third U23s game on Tuesday but is not down to play tomorrow, which suggests the 25-year-old may be considered fit enough to return to the senior squad for next week's trip to QPR.

Folami and celina finding the net regularly . Both deserve more time in first team.

dugoutdave Surely if that's the case he must have a niggle, as game time can only be good for him, especially a week in advance?

Agree Celina needs to be playing. Creativity & pace. Pleased Adeyemi played 80 mins. Getting players fit is our priority.
Disappointed re no CB as I am sure MM is. Despite my reservations re him as manager still agree we need to get behind the lads now and see what happens. We have goals in the team which I hope will help!

COYB!

Jas0999 the Everton youngster certainly sounds like a quality player, but I agree that we should be developing our own. What is the difference between our own 18 year old CB and someone else's 19 year old CB?

The 19 yo is better. Wigan fans loved him last year

Celina in the first team is needed agreed. Instead of Sears? Would people agree with that?

Yes Celina should be at least featuring from the bench early-mid second half, if not starting. Best dribbler in the club, can step-over then go either way. Has been scoring goals. Sears performance vs Fulham was poor. Downes should be starting ahead of Ward too.

I'd play Celina over Sears. I'm hoping Micks easing him in post sickness.

I like Freddie, he works hard but Celina looks really top draw.

Celina should 100% be starting ahead of Sears. Very skillful player with an eye for goal (both scoring and assists) and easily the best free kick taker in our squad!
