Chambers: I'd Love to Manage Town One Day
Friday, 20th Apr 2018 12:45

Skipper Luke Chambers says he’d love to manage the Blues at some point in the future with his short spell working under caretaker-boss Bryan Klug having whetted his appetite.

Chambers, who is set to miss the rest of the season with the injuries he suffered at Brentford, was on the bench alongside Klug at the City Ground on Saturday and has joined assistants Gerard Nash and Chris Hogg as part of the temporary management team.

“Bryan and the coaches have had me in all the meetings and it’s certainly whetted my appetite going forward,” Chambers, 32, writes in his column in the programme for Saturday’s game against Aston Villa.

"I’ve said it before but having a look at the job from the ‘inside’, it’s made my mind up completely that I want to test myself as a manager.

“I’d love to have that opportunity here one day. It’s a great club. I’d like to think I have given good service here as a player and I want that to continue. It’s also a great place to gain experience and progress as a coach.

“We have an academy here whose job it is to produce players for the first team, why not have the structure in place to develop managers here as well?

“We have some really good young coaches here already. You’ve also got people working here like Kieron Dyer and Titus Bramble, who have had long careers in the game.

“Cole Skuse is another who wants to progress and move into coaching so why not have that avenue where players can move from playing to coaching here when the time is right? The club could be in a position to bring through its own managers in time.”

Chambers leadership and enthusiasm is up there with the best. This experience with Klug will be a big experience for him, can definitely see him becoming a good coach in the future.

No matter what your opinion on Luke's footballing ability is, I think that the vast majority would be in agreement that he is a fantastic individual to have at our club. His passion, desire and overall professionalism, alongside his clear leadership qualities and apparently love for our club can only be seen as a good thing and I would certainly have no issues with him staying at the club in some capacity once he hangs up his boots.

There is clearly a huge amount to learn in order to become a successful football manager at Championship/Premiership level, however, with Luke's ambition and willingness to learn and improve he certainly has a chance of making it.

I can see Luke and Cole as a management team, going down the same road as Mowbray and Venus have. Whether either of the duo's will be seen within the ITFC home dugout at somepoint in the future, only time will tell.

He definitely has the passion for Ipswich, you have to give him that. I think Luke is a genuine guy. We have to remember he came to us as a centre back and look reasonably settled. Unfortunately he got slated a bit when he got asked to play the less familiar role of full back. Once or twice I watched him and tricky wingers were giving him a nightmare. But I would say he's more comfortable as a centre back. Say what you like about the guy but I can assure you there are countless other players that have pulled on the blue shirt down the years who cared for Ipswich far less. And when Luke scored what should of been the winner against Norwich recently you could see how much it meant to him.

Hmm, not sure about management material, would be interesting to see his ethos on 'playing style'. But would love the guy to stay on as a coach and maybe even a number two. If he proves himself then yeah, why not! Him staying here instead of going back to Forest said a lot about his character and appreciation commitment to our club.

It takes more to be a great manager than the ability to wave your arm around in front of the North Stand. Can he do it in from of the Pioneer Stand too? That's what I want to know.

I'm sorry, but he's a centre half that we have, not the captain we need. If he goes, he goes with thanks.
Keep Bialkowski by any means necessary and build a new spine for the first team.

No matter what you think of Luke Chambers, I think he has proven that he is an Ipswich Town man over the last couple of weeks, unlike some players who have queued up to say how much they liked their old manager, who ironically they repeatedly let down on the pitch.

Never assume. Something I believe strongly in.

Just because someone's a top player, doesn't mean they'll make a great coach and completely the opposite is true.

Chambers could well be brilliant. Undoubtedly he'll have been influenced by McCarthy, but it doesn't mean he has the same footballing thoughts when it comes to playing the game.

No doubt he'd be good on the man management side of things.

This guy is a crippled version of Tommy Smith. Sooner he's gone the better. I don't rate him as a defender and I don't rate him as a captain.

I admire his passion, but wish he had the skill of some previous ITFC centre halves

No matter what people think of his ability this guy spent most of his career here under Mick in a right back role which clearly isn't his position but no one can surely deny his obvious passion for winning and commitment to the club.

Chambers has leadership qualities and is the kind of guy other players look up to. There's definitely a career for him in football once his playing days come to an end. Whether that's as a manager...who knows. But I hope he gives it a go.

I can see him being a good number two if not. He's got the motivational abilities.

More generally, it's just nice to see a player who has genuine affection for our club. He's been - and still will be - a great servant.

I would love to see him as our manager one day. He is such a passionate player and the other players all look up to him.

He also loves living in Ipswich. So much so that he has just moved house in Ipswich!

Whatever I've thought about the guy as a player(mainly down to being played out of position, but that was not his fault) I feel he is a born leader who will gain respect from his players who will adopt his never say die attitude(even when he was getting skinned week in week out as a right back which he is not) and enthusiasm in 2 or 3 years time when he has his badges and starting his management career a bit further down the ladder I reckon he will make a name for himself, and who knows we may see him back!?

One things for sure, a players attributes and playing style often have little bearing on their (possible) management skills and style. Pep Guardiola was a defensive midfielder!
