Town and Hull Linked With Boro Winger as Forest Claimed to Be Eyeing Waghorn
Wednesday, 20th Jun 2018 14:55

Town and Hull City have been linked with a move for Middlesbrough winger Marvin Johnson, while Nottingham Forest are said to be keen on Blues striker Martyn Waghorn.

According to the Daily Mail, Johnson, 27, who was signed from Oxford last August for £3 million, could depart the Riverside this summer either permanently or on loan with Town and the Tigers both interested. Birmingham, who are managed by his former Boro boss Garry Monk, have also been linked.

Boro are said to accept they will have to take a loss on the fee which was paid last summer.

Johnson made six Middlesbrough starts and 12 sub appearances during 2017/18, scoring one goal.

Prior to his time with Oxford, the Birmingham-born wideman played in non-league with Solihull Moors, Coleshill Town (loan), Romulus, Kidderminster Harriers and Hednesford Town (loan) as well as at Motherwell in Scotland.

Town boss Paul Hurst has said he is looking to add wingers to a squad which he sees as unbalanced.

If the Blues are interested in Johnson, who has two years left on his contract, the Teesiders would have to be willing to take a very significant hit on the £3 million they paid for him, certainly to offload him on a permanent basis. A loan would appear a more likely option.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mirror claims Forest boss Aitor Karanka is showing interest in 16-goal Blues top scorer Martyn Waghorn among a number of other strikers, including ex-Town frontman Jack Marriott, who is currently with Peterborough.

Waghorn, 28, is contracted to the Blues until the summer of 2019 with the club having an option for a further season.

Karanka’s main striking target is Patrick Bamford, who he took to Boro during his time in charge on Teesside, while he is said to be looking to move on former Blues frontman Daryl Murphy, now 35.

Both seem unlikely. Is a bit said that we would be ruled out of a deal as low as £3 million though

12th man

Not disagreeing, I accept that. Just saying that it's disappointing that a sum of just £3 million rules us out.

I don't know how that's confused you?

The story said "Boro are said to accept they will have to take a loss on the fee which was paid last summer."

So it won't be 3 mil.

It's easy to link us with wingers as Hurst said that's what he's looking for. Worried if forest come up with a stupid bid for Waghorn. Need to keep him.

Can't quite see why Waghorn would go to Forest. They finished lower than us, arguably less stable, not a notably bigger wage budget. He's well liked here, will almost certainly be the centre-piece of our striking force.

Forest splashing the cash this summer so they would probably offer better wages than he is on here... I would like to think that waggers has been around the block a few times and will appreciate the stability of the club and how much he's loved here rather than have to go and start from scratch AGAIN!

Forest by far looking the most ambitious already...their fat Greek shipping magnet owner is looking to the pot of gold that is the Premiership, wouldn't be surprised if they put in a reasonable bid in for Waghorn.

Forest and ready to splurge but they can forget it.

Will be surprised if the splurge works. Better have failed and the fans are already questioning Aitor.

Maybe wrong but defo candidates for Mick when they are bang in trouble come Oct but could be wrong.

Point being Hands off Waggy.

Any chance we can just wait for some actual news of some kind rather than just rumour on rumour.

We have not got any money, Hurst won't sell anyone until he has had them at least a couple of weeks or longer and suspect his targets are ones we have not even considered i.e. he is a man with a plan; give him a chance to implement something first!

Waghorn will attract interest - unfortunately.

Waggy was one of the brightest parts of last season so he shouldn't be going anywhere!!!

If Hurst sells Waghorn it would be biggest mistake in first week.He would soon get the treatment dished to Mccarthy

Would have thought that Mcgoldrick given his family circumstances is more likley to go to forest..

A one year deal for Murphy perhaps ? Would be useful to bring off the bench and assist any younger striker we get in assuming sears and mcgoldrick leave.

It's all rumour at this stage, but I really hope that we look to build a squad this summer, not bring in numerous loans, only to be back to square one next summer.

It's essential that we hold on to Waghorn and Bart. Any sale would be pointless as the money wouldn't be fully reinvested.

Can't see us selling Waggy, unless it for big money, that could be re-invested in the squad. Waggy loves being at the club and I think if we offered him a new long term contract he would sign it. He is totally committed to the club and also the area, having moved his parents down from the North East. He's also well in to the baltacha foundation and is settled, can't see him going anywhere

It'd have to be big money (8-9 million) for Wags. Saying that, Forest do have that kind of money so not an impossibility.

The Johnson link seems way more unlikely. They'd be expecting 2M at least. Saying that, Hull do have the capacity to make that deal.

We will get linked loads for the next few weeks, we are an obvious target since we lost so many squad and U23 players. They have probably noted Hughes' need for a winger and will now link us with any winger that might be available.
