McGoldrick on Trial With Blades
Monday, 16th Jul 2018 08:34

Released Blues striker David McGoldrick is joining Sheffield United on trial.

According to the Sheffield Star, the 30-year-old was invited to train with the Blades squad and is expected to play in Tuesday’s friendly against Bradford City at Valley Parade as he looks to impress manager Chris Wilder.

McGoldrick left Town in May when he wasn’t offered new terms with his contract up, but in any case the former Nottingham Forest and Southampton man was keen to move closer to his family home in the East Midlands.

It's reported that Wilder spoke to former Blues boss Mick McCarthy regarding McGoldrick prior to making his approach to the player.

McCarthy is said to have told him he believed the three-hour travelling time from the striker's home in Nottingham may have served to aggravate his injury problems.

Earlier in the summer, the Republic of Ireland international was reported to be in talks with Aston Villa, West Brom and Bristol City.

Only good for a pay as you play contact, don,t think many would argue that he's not a good footballer when fit,

Been interested to see how long he stays fit. Probably until the day after he gets a new contract.

Good luck with that, good player IF he isn't injured. But he's injured. A lot.

You have to wonder with his injuries... I guess the blades will have to decide if he can still cut it...

Utter class.

Shame his legs have gone, he's injury prone and can only give about 45 mins a game

Skilful but no pace and always injured.
He'll probably pull a muscle getting back in his car after signing.

Who cares, he's not a town player

In the modern game how can you allow someone essentially a 6 hour round commute to work and back. The A14 at the best of times isn't a pleasant drive between Huntingdon & Cambridge. If McGoldrick / McCarthy are using his commute as the reason for his injuries I'd question why he was allowed this arrangement? Doesn't add up IMHO

"McCarthy is said to have told him he believed the three-hour travelling time from the striker's home in Nottingham may have served to aggravate his injury problems"

I expect asking possibly the most naturally talented player we had to run back and cover wing backs rather than using all his energy attacking helped his injury cause then?

League 1 standard. His best days are well behind him.

Lot of criticism on here for him, which is a shame. He is clearly a gifted footballer who we all liked to watch and were happy to praise when he was banging the goals in. I wish he hadn't been injured as much, I guess he does too. But footballers get injured, some more than others, it's part of the game. Good luck to him, I hope he gets another club and I wish him well - just not against Ipswich :)

But on the commuting point, I agree with other comments - who agreed a six hour round trip
Commute?

Good luck to him, I hope he gets a decent contract. On his day he's a very technically gifted player and can change a game in a heartbeat.

Mourinho made Chelsea's players live within a 10 mile radius of their Cobham training ground. What on earth were we doing letting a player commute from Nottingham? Was it because the manager was still living in South London?

sad ,but I think he will drift into obscurity, cant believe he will suddenly be stronger and injury free, he could end up on the injury list ,by doing up his laces. Good player when he first arrived, but then became a well paid passenger. Good luck to him none the less. .
