Hurst Would Like Three Loanees Following Garner's Exit But Can Only Sign Two
Saturday, 11th Aug 2018 18:42

Town manager Paul Hurst says he’d ideally like three loanees following the deadline day exit of striker Joe Garner but will only be able to sign two due to Janoi Donacien currently being classed as a loan player.

Garner moved to Wigan for a fee of £1.25 million in the final minutes of the transfer window.

“I think in the end Joe’s personal situation wasn’t the easiest, I’ll not go into too many details with regards to that, nothing that’s going to hit the front pages or anything like that, but it wasn’t ideal for him being at Ipswich Town,” Hurst said regarding the reasons for Garner wanting to move back to the North-West.

“Still, as a football club, we’ve got to try and look after ourselves as well, he’d clearly signed a contract, but I think moving forward it was the best decision for us.

“Certainly no hard feelings between myself and Joe or anything like that, just personal circumstances.

“That perhaps allows us now moving forward to try and look at the loan market but we’ve only got a couple of loans to use realistically and we’ve got to use them well.”

Another striker is now on Hurst’s wish-list in addition to a central defender and a third player for an unspecified position.

However, with Donacien awaiting the extension to his permanent leave to remain in the UK before his £750,000 switch from Accrington is confirmed as a permanent deal, he is currently only looking at two loanees with teams only allowed to name five in a matchday squad.

“Unfortunately because of Janoi’s situation we’ve had to take him on loan and that’s the rules so it is what it is I suppose,” he reflected.

“But it’s very odd when you’ve had someone that’s been in the country for so long [since 2001], has played football and has moved up a level. Clearly he’s contributing to society if you like. And we’ve got to wait on him to find out whether he can stay in the country.

“I think we need three players in and we’ve only got two loans to use. I’ve got to make the decision of what’s crucial for us and to help the squad overall.”

Town can sign more than five but someone would have to sit out each week, a position Hurst says isn’t ideal.

“I’ve been in that situation once and I didn’t like it,” he said. “At times we were leaving a player out, one in particular at a previous club, who didn’t deserve to be left out.

“And it’s hard as through the week he knows he’s going to be the one to miss out. That’s not really fair. I’ll do whatever I need to do, don’t get me wrong, but I think it’s a bit of a waste.

“Unless something happens and we have an injury somewhere else and it’s crucial to fill a position, I’ll try and do what we can to just use the two.”

A bitterly disappointing result today, this one hurts more than any in a long time given how badly I wanted it to start well for Hurst's new look team. Goals could be the problem, as we haven't scored more than one so far including the friendlies. We need another striker having lost the proven goals of Waghorn, Garner and McGoldrick. Hopefully Harrison and Jackson will come good, but if they don't - heck! Sears isn't likely to score many and in a tougher-than-ever Championship it is a big worry.

While the team is gelling, really feel both those two loan options need to have proven quality and experience of the Championship PH, to counter balance the lack of experience we currently have in our starting XI.

Hi Mark, were you ar the 2-2 draw last weekend? 😉

I understand Chambo is captain and I absolutely love the guy, but his positioning today was very poor, as was it against Blackburn. The way we're wanting to play too, in my opinion, doesn't suit him. I think Donacian is a slight liability at the minute, with such a big step up. Regarding Doz, either play him frequently to give the lad fitness etc, or loan him for a month as a maximum because we need his style in this team.

Not bothered about the result today (well I am), but it will take time for us to reach the hights both us fans and PH want. It might be a rocky season, but be patient. I don't understand fans judging PH already - it is TWO games!

Whoops, today's result must have depressed my brain more than I thought! Yes, I was there. :-)

Hurst said a few days ago that he hoped the players could step up and there may be some that can't. So the excuse is there already.
ME has backed Hurst and got the players he wanted.
We are one of the favs to go down.......let's hope we can do what Shrewsbury did last season.

But we all got what we wished for MM gone a up and coming manager,ME to back his manager all the deadwood going and players who want to run forever for Ipswich.

So please no moaning from the MM haters.

Chambers was 1 of our better players against Blackburn. He had no support from Donacien, also baring in mind he was playing in the unnatural left side of the 2. However more often he was having to fill the void of Janoi, the 2nd goal being a classic example. He is also needed at the mo as the voice on the pitch, to guide the more inexperienced and new players. Out of the "old guard" the one looking most uncomfortable is Skuse. I have always been a supporter of the role Skuse played and the unnoticed stuff he did. However I do see when Huws gets fit him dropping to the bench.

So he's signed 9, yet wants THREE more after the transfer window has shut.

Seriously alarming signs about now. Not a good time to be a town fan, gotta swim quick at this level or it's going to be tough.

Not going to judge until 11 games played however. 25% point.

I'm worried he's a little crazy.

12 new players?

Easy, if he wants 3 loans - save the £750k and don't sign donacien( clearly not as good as Emmanuel or spence)
Then ffs get 3 in with CHAMPIONSHIP experience

@timkatieadamitfc I totally agree that we need Championship experience. I'd like to see CCV in at CB & we need a proven striker who can score goals, I might get slated for this but we need a striker like Chris Martin or Cameron Jerome mold, these lads know where the net is. It's ok picking the better players from leagues below but we need experience in there to settle the ship

Spot on @bluearmy78 couldn't agree more, I'd love to see ccv back, EXACTLY the type of player we desperately need.
Sooner we get huws, bishop and dozzell back to full fitness the better, those 3 WILL make such a difference

First game of the season for me today...
so disappointing result wise but lots of positives. Nolan was terrific and is going to be a super player for us. Chalobah has touches of real quality especially first half. Nsiala did well throughout. We played pretty well today. Edwards, looks bright too. With one up too we looked short...
onwards and upwards.

Let's hope Donacien fails to get his visa extended

I do believe Donacien is shyte. Definitely out of his depth in the championship. Rotherham had a half decent right back last season. If only we could get a player like that..........

I don't agree re Donacien, I think the step up is a big one for him and yes he made a few 'Lower league' type errors but there was some damn good stuff too, give the lad a chance I think he will be a good player for us.
I am more worried that our two new strikers looked out of their depth, but again given time and perhaps the opportunity to play together, not a fan of 'one up top'. There were some good positives in todays game, it's not all doom and gloom, get benty in.

This is a shambles... says it all when a Man Utd manger says he is now a head coach aka.. they are the players I'm dealt with... I'm sorry but people need to open there eyes properly and realise that even if we had pep guardiola we would fail with this bent owner!! It will never get better! I am fully behind hurst but I feel he will be chucked in the deep end and be made to look average!

Donacien is a liability on what we have seen so far. If it continues I'd agree with a coup of others on here.

Not sure what Hurst saw in him and its a big fee in ITFC terms. Spence is better and was free!

Whilst I have had huge concerns about the number of lower league only experience players, to write Donacien off so quickly is crazy! Goals is always key, hence getting rid of 40 of them in last seasons front four it's a huge gamble to not get any proven quality at this level. Plus you can add assists of Waggy. I do worry when we've taken a point from two promoted clubs how we will fare against the better sides. His comments on Dozell and Nydam were disappointing also

Those of you upset with MMs championship journeymen can relax... we now how a load of lower league journeymen and the kids are not getting games... be careful what you wish for
