League One Decision Set for Further Delay
Thursday, 28th May 2020 21:44

Wednesday’s EFL board meeting reportedly failed to reach a conclusion regarding the future of the League One season.

Clubs put forward various proposals in response to the draft framework outlined by the EFL last week which were discussed at the meeting. However, according to The Guardian, no consensus regarding a way forward was reached.

As a result a vote on how the season will be brought to an end is said to have been delayed with a series of options to be put to the clubs, including playing to a conclusion behind closed doors as Town and a number of other clubs want, curtailing the campaign now and settling places, promotion and relegation on points per game, potentially voiding relegation and, perhaps, extending the play-offs.

The clubs will reportedly have five days to consider the options before they vote with the decision now expected to be pushed back to Monday 8th June at the earliest, reducing the window in which the remaining fixtures might be played before the July 31st cut-off.

It’s understood around 15 clubs want the season brought to an immediate end with a 51 per cent vote required to carry the day, while the Blues are among six to have lobbied for the campaign to be played to its conclusion, the EFL’s preferred solution.

Tranmere, who would go down should points per game settle the final table, and Peterborough, who would miss out on the play-offs in that scenario, are said to have threatened legal action.

Shambles! What on earth does a further delay achieve?! Make a decision either way and let the clubs get on with it

Abandon relegation? And have a 28 team division in a season that will never get started at this rate? Utterly pathetic.

Premier league want relegation and completion of season for financial reasons obviously( sky money etc) .That follows there has to be promotion / relagation from championship and that passes down to our league . It is a fiddle by EFL to get teams to compete for this somehow and I have heard ( from someone involved in a team in the top 6) a week ago that a play off will occur , held at MK dons with one legged matches to provide a third team . This seems to have been arranged BEFORE any vote. We have had a bang average season and don't get me wrong probably wouldn't have had a chance to be in the play offs but with the bottom teams to play it was POSSIBLE. Conversely Rotherham had all the top 7 teams to play and could anyone say they would not fall away from the top two ? The seaso has been a farce in many ways and it may as well end in one !

Town look like finding themselves on the wrong side of the argument again. It was only 13 clubs wanting to cancel the season earlier in the week. Evidently, the awesome Marcus Evans is regarded with the same eye-rolling contempt as he is here.

Unbelievable handling of the situation by the EFL nearly matching the Brexit fiasco!

Thank goodness those on the EFL board have no influence on bringing the country out of lockdown, or are working on the NHS frontline. I appreciate that this is a very tricky situation, but it is being handled very badly.

Just abandon this season with no relegation or promotion and have the Third Division go again in September as a restart of the 2019/20 season. Has the advantage that the Second Division will have to do the same and the knock on effect that the Premiership would have to do the same.
