Raggett Admits Winner Shouldn't Have Counted
Saturday, 7th Nov 2020 20:57

Sean Raggett admitted that his winning goal shouldn’t have counted as he was offside following Portsmouth’s 3-2 after-extra-time FA Cup first-round victory over the Blues, while Pompey manager Kenny Jackett said he hadn’t watched the incident back.

Replays showed that former Norwich defender Raggett was clearly offside when he applied the final touch in the 111th minute to see his side through to round two.

“It was pure instinct to hit it and as soon as I did I thought I maybe shouldn’t have done that,” he told the Portsmouth News.

“Luckily the goal was given, though, and maybe you do need that luck sometimes but I felt we deserved to win the game.”

Jackett felt it was an entertaining tie and that if his team did get the run of the green then it was about time given some of the decisions they’ve been on the wrong end of this season.

“It was a great game. Both sides clearly went for it and it was two very good teams,” he said. “It's just a shame the crowd couldn't be there to see what was a fantastic cup tie.

“I thought that we had the better of it in the first half. In the second half, Ipswich came into it and then we had some very good chances in extra-time.

“With them at home, it was going end to end but it was a terrific game and our players showed a very good attitude. It's just a shame the crowd weren't there to see it.

“I haven't seen the goal again. If it was offside, we have had plenty of decisions — particularly at Fratton Park this season — go against us that we would have got.

“We've lost three games at Fratton Park already and last season were unbeaten. The crowd play a big part and if decisions go our way sometimes, we have to take them.”

It takes the mickey -everyone after the event saying they were lucky/wrong. Lambert ought to make a formal complaint so that the refs/Lino's get downgraded for a month.

Bit of a nothing headline in all honestly. You might as well say “Ragget admits Ipswich scored twice”. We all know, and the proof is there.

Fair play to Raggett, he's only doing what's natural.
To be really honest Pompey deserved the win. We played a reserve team and I didn't expect 2-2, let alone a win. I don't really give a monkeys about the cup either.
However, if we had professional officials the game could have been so very different with the sending off (defo in the prem and with VAR) and the goal!!! My 9 year old daughter who knows f*all about football said ‘that's not fair, that man stole that goal from the other man' so even a 9 year old could see he touched it!!
The refs need to be held accountable. If players and managers have to do post match interviews, then they should be compulsory for refs as well. They need to explain why they made the big decisions as they did, and if in hindsight they realise they've had a mare (they are human and we all make mistakes) then just come out and say so and apologise!!! Where are the FA, EFL and press on all of this?

Good on Raggett to speak up and he did the right thing. Speaks volumes about his character.

Things just don't seem to be going our way at the moment.

Jackett annoys me. "I didn't see it." "We've been on the end of wrong decisions ourselves this season." What has that got to do with anything? Do two wrongs make a right? How does that justify the fact that we were robbed again, even if this doesn't feel as unfair as the Sunderland debacle, where even a blind camel could see it wasn't a penalty?

More shocking refereeing decisions!! Can't we use the video of the 'tackle' by the Pompey player yesterday (which wasn't even given as a foul!!!!!) and send it to the FA / EFL as video evidence that Dozzell's red card was unjustified??? I'd like to see how they can say Dozzell should have been sent off when the Pompey lunge wasn't even a foul, let alone a yellow card.

I know the Prem teams are anti VAR but we need it right now. The lower you get the worse the refs so we really need some assistance.

Surely most offsides are flagged by the linesman. Not always easy for the ref but the linesman should always be in line !!

Top of the FA's “to do” list should be conducting a dispassionate, but thorough, investigation into refereeing standards in the lower professional leagues, and then take positive and swift action to improve standards and consistency. But of course that makes the assumption that the blazer-men would ever accept there's a significant problem!

Sighs, and moves on.

Suffolkboy- there is very little honesty or integrity in football any more. I am not a Rugby fan but football could learn a lot from it. I am not naive enough to think Raggett would put his hand up for the goal to be disallowed but I would like to see football clamp down an all the gamesmanship. Why is it that you have a professional footballer that can control the ball on a sixpence most of the time but when their team is a goal up with 5 minutes left to play and they win a throw in the ball gets passed or thrown to them and all of a sudden it's like a wet salmon !!! Or they get a flick on the ear and behave like they have been hit by Mike Tyson. The game is rotten with cheats and always will be while our children watch their heroes behave in this manner.

Its all well and good coming out the next day saying I knew I cheated and it wasnt a goal but personally I think we could do with a few more paulo di Canio moments in the game if anyone else can remember that back in the year 2000. Maybe its just me but if were expecting fans and officials to be respectful etc then shouldn't players. I think the problem though is that some managers tell their players to go down easy and win free kicks etc which lets be honest is cheating. Maybe bring in 5 mins sin bins that might sort some of the issues in the game. P.S I'm not some rugby loving fan either

No surprise that a manger never sees when it's a favourable decision ....just when it goes against you .
Always admire a manger more when they admit they got lucky ....but for some reason more managers seem to be having a pop at us or at least not being bothered about decisions that go against us
.....becoming a club of little consequence .....need to get out of this league (upwards) and fast
