Donacien Set to Join Fleetwood
Friday, 22nd Jan 2021 12:24

Blues full-back Janoi Donacien’s move on loan to Fleetwood Town is set to be confirmed later today.

The switch is expected to have been sorted prior to the noon deadline which will allow Donacien to make his Cod Army debut at Wigan tomorrow with an announcement anticipated once the paperwork has been rubberstamped.

The 27-year-old was made available by Town having been unable to break into the League One XI this season and had been interesting a number of clubs.

Plymouth had a £50,000 offer rebuffed last week, while Donacien’s former club Accrington Stanley, where he also spent a loan spell during 2018/19, and Wigan were also keen.

The St Lucia-born full-back or centre-half’s only three games have come cup competitions and with his contract up in the summer.

The former Aston Villa youngster’s Town contract is up in the summer, although the Blues have an option for a further season.

Paul Hurst brought Donacien to Portman Road in the summer of 2018 for £750,000 from Stanley - initially on loan while his permanent leave to remain was confirmed - and the defender was regular during the current Grimsby manager’s time at Portman Road. However, he has rarely featured since Paul Lambert, his boss at Villa, took charge at Town.

In total, Donacien has made 30 starts and two sub appearances in his two and a half years with the Blues without scoring.

Skipper Luke Chambers is currently playing at right-back with Kane Vincent-Young still on his way back from injury, while Luke Woolfenden, Gwion Edwards and Cole Skuse, also currently sidelined with injury, all have experience of playing there.

Assistant manager Stuart Taylor talked about Donacien's impending exit at this morning's press conference.

would rather we kept donacien and offloaded lambert, it appears the 2 aren't compatible...

looks like there's far more takers for donacien's services than lambert's though!

Good luck to him, deserved more chances here but not in favour with PL.

Good luck to the lad. He needs to play and he clearly will not get a chance here.

Well thats 750k we'll never see again ..... i actually thought he looked half decent when i saw him. No doubt he'll go to Fleetwood and perform brilliantly like most players we give away or release do.

I feel for the lad. Not even on the bench and seeing Chambers being selected week in week out!! No cover at right back now unless you include Cotter. It seems the "cretin" Shambert doesn't like him at all.

Would love to know who will be our defensive cover considering we have two 35 year old full backs and 26 games to play in 3 months? We have ridiculous imbalance in the squad now with far too many no.10's and no full backs!!

Good (look forward to his return)

Evans seems to want to loan Donacien because he doesn't want to accept the huge loss on the transfer. Unless we trigger his 1 year extension (stupid because he never plays) he's going to be worth £0 in the summer. So even if you won't sell him Mr Evans, you're still going to be down £750k, thanks to that football genius Paul Hurst, whom you appointed.

Matty81: on the left we have Ward, Kenlock and Nydam (when fit). On the right there is KV-Y (when fit). However, if KV-Y isn’t fit and Chambers is injured then we’re left with moving Woolfenden across, or Cotter or Crowe.

So we turn down a fee to get rid of him permanently - and decide to let him go on loan.
This club really is a shambles.

If Wigan were interested couldn’t we have done a deal to bring highly rated Wigan left back Tom Pierce to us as part of the deal.? Boy , we are seriously sh!t at dealing /recruitment. I would love to buy a car off this lot ..... they are hopeless at it

We'll end up with a 2-7-1 formation the way we're going

Questions will be asked if he plays regularly for Fleetwood there better than us.

Bad move to let a steady player leave by a manager who does not no what day of the week it is

It's hard to see this as other than £750k down the drain.

Meanwhile people in Accrington have been spotted rolling round the streets in uncontrolable fits of laughter.

Never let us down and never given a proper run.....despite staying fit. And yet, with glaring gaps in our bloated squad at full back, we letting him go. Sincerely hope there is a plan here and not to rely on Chambers until the end of this season !

Better right back than Chambers. Looked solid enough to be a regular in L1 but then again why play players in their natural positions....
