Former Loanee McGuinness Joins Cardiff
Monday, 21st Jun 2021 13:17

Former Blues loanee Mark McGuinness has joined Mick McCarthy’s Cardiff City on a permanent basis from Arsenal.

The Republic of Ireland U21 international has signed a deal which runs to the summer of 2024.

"As soon as a club like Cardiff City were interested I was excited and I couldn't miss this opportunity,” McGuinness told Cardiff City TV.

“It's nice to get everything sorted early on and hopefully I can meet the boys and get going.

“My job is to stop the ball going into the back of the net. I love heading and I love defending.

"It's a great opportunity for me to learn and improve in the next few years at the club."

The 20-year-old spent 2020/21 on loan with the Blues making 24 starts and one sub appearance, scoring one goal.

Mick will turn him into the finished article. Superb signing from Cardiff, Will be playing in the premier league within 2 years.

Fair play.
I honestly think he will become a key figure for Cardiff under Mick.
He was raw but clearly a talent.

Good move for the lad, but unless we were in for him either for loan or purchase is it really a worthy news article on here?

This is a good move for Mark as his chances of breaking into the Arsenal first team are zero. One thing for sure is that he'll be at Cardiff longer than Mick as they will realise he is sh1te and sack him this season.

Good luck to Mark

ringwoodblue: I think i'm right in saying that Cardiff only lost one game after MM joined.Somebody may correct me.First 10 games unbeaten.MM did a sterling job for ITFC only to be driven out by the haters and look what happened since.I sincerely hope PC does well but the Club needs to get a wriggle on.

Ringwood, it's fans like you that are partly to blame for the predicament the club finds itself in. Did you read Alan Lee's interview. Mick was doing a good job until he was hounded out by the likes of you to get replaced by Hurst.

Why didn't we sign him?

We need a centre-back.

I really rated McGuinness and felt sorry for him being in an Ipswich team that was unmotivated to win and badly managed and coached. He will do well in his career.

geminimustang, he lost 3 of his last 12 games (including a 5-0 loss against sheff weds), won 3.

didn't rate mcguinness, far more error prone than toto without the attributes. would much rather keep woolf than bring him back.

we need an organising, experienced centre-back, not another kid to block woolf & baggott's progress

I can see this being a perfect move for him.

McCarthy is the ideal man to improve his game. I can see him going on to become another Adam Webster.

Ringwood have you listened to the Alan Lee interviews? In Lee's words McCarthy was the 'biggest asset we had' - and its difficult to argue with results he achieved on the pathetic budget he had. Sure the football was cr@p, and we were clearly going nowhere, but subsequent events would suggest that he was anything but 'sh1te'. The reality is that given a proper budget he would have been signing players of the calibre of McGuiness, we would have retained McGoldrick, Webster etc. , and we'd be in a far better position than we are now. As for Cardiff sacking him, their record after he took over last season was: played 19, won 10, drew 9, lost 3. I'd take that in the Championship...

I'm happy for Mark but losing him concerns me. I think he has a lot of ability, and under the right coach and manager, he could be a top central defender.

I don't understand the comments that Toto was the more reliable centre half; McGuinness always seemed to be covering him or the full backs and did a pretty good job of it. Everyone around him was error-prone, Nsiala especially. I hope this move doesn't come back to bite us.

Mick did come over as a bit self-opinionated and at the time, I felt it was right for him to leave. But looking back, I'm pretty sure Mick + a bit of investment would have at least had us up and around the playoffs rather than mid-table. He certainly had an eye for talent. Don't bank on Cardiff not going up next season. Still, we move on...

Gawd, why is everybody interested in a player, that most on here slagged off whenever he played, and our dull ex manager from a few years ago?

Great move for him. If he's not a premiership player he'll be found out under Mick. I however think he has loads of talent and potential and MM will bring it out. Oh for the days of just missing out on the play-offs for the premiership with practically no money. Those who hounded MM out are at least as Responsible for us being in league one as anyone.

He wasn`t as good as Woolfie but better than Toto so not too upset tbh.

Personally I think we've dodged a bullet. He was a liability during that run in and looked ot a little like turning into the new Titus Bramble (ie.- play ok only for 89 of the 90 minutes every game). Yes he's young and may improve, but we can't afford to keep giving time to other club's players to make their mistakes.

All the comments about MM here really are so pointless, he was the past as was his football. I don't think I've ever met such a self opinionated person and his football was archaic as it si at Cardiff.
Good luck to MCguiness he's going to need it under MM
