Town in Talks to Sign Chaplin
Monday, 26th Jul 2021 10:02

TWTD understands Town are closing in on a move for Barnsley forward Conor Chaplin, who previously played for Blues boss Paul Cook at Portsmouth.

We understand that talks are ongoing regarding the 24-year-old and a deal could be done before the end of the week.

Chaplin came through the youth system at Pompey having joined them aged six and broke into their senior side in 2014/15 and was a regular in Cook’s side at Fratton Park after he took over at the start of the following campaign.

Worthing-born Chaplin joined Coventry on loan in the summer of 2018 with the move becoming a permanent switch in the January. The following summer he joined Barnsley on a four-year deal.

In 2020/21 5ft 7in tall Chaplin, who plays wide or centrally as a number 10, made 34 starts and five sub appearances, scoring four goals.

I'd certainly be happy to take a player that made 34 starts for a side who made the Championship play offs last season. At 24 he's still young enough to hopefully kick on another level too. More potentially good business!

Just been reading about this on twitter.
This is someone I've kept an eye on for about 4 years.
This is a talented footballer who I have to say we be another coup!
If we manage to sign him and Edmondson from the Gers, Yes it's a a big if right now but My word This is exciting.

If this rumour was during any of the previous managers reigns in the Marcus Evans era, I'm sure there'd be more than a few Charlie Chaplin jokes flowing on here.

Good player. Not an incredible scoring record; but more importantly creates opportunities for others and has a high work rate. The kind of player who doesn't give up. A welcome signing if it happens.

Would be very happy with this signing. Attacking wide left; would do a lot of damage in League 1.

Guessing if we sign him that would put an end to the Celina rumours.

Alhough I would be happy with this guy - good age, good experience, would add a lot to the team.

As effective a player as Chaplin may be I must confess I am getting a little confused as to our recruitment policy here. We've now signed two forwards, whilst still having Norwood (and nominally Jackson) on our books - and we know Cook only prefers to play one. Why do we need a fourth forward? If we plan to play him an attacking midfielder then we've already got Harper, Burns, Evans, Dobra etc - are we effectively giving up on the latter? Seems to me that the areas that really need investment right now are in defence, esp an experienced CB...

Yes agree a very good signing plays on the left. Wonder if this means the Coulson deal is slipping away with Warnock having second thoughts on the player. A key position for me is central defence where we could do with someone with experience a natural leader in the Mowbray, DeVos mould. Nsiala did ok Saturday but preseason friendlies do nothing for me and judging him over a full season im not sure if i trust him. Wolfenden with an experienced head beside him i think would blossom into a very good player but it's obvious at times he lacks maturity.

Derehamblue - no Championship club will want Jackson. It doesn't seem like anyone is showing any interest in him at the moment, even from L1 or L2 !

Bigpaulyd1 do you actually know what the Barnsley supporters think about losing him? He was an integral part of their promotion challenge in the Championship. Check background.

Moving Jackson on a concern - not hearing of any interest unless Cook is trying to turn him into a right winger back up to Burns ?

Can people please ignore Bigpaulyd1. He is clearly just attention seeking so feeding his needs by responding will just encourage him whilst upsetting each of us.

d77sgw. Hes a forward, not a striker. In other words a winger or a number 10. So what's to be confused about?

We seem to be really upping the effort at the moment. Would be good to complete these permanent deals. Get some game time prior to the big kick off. Can't wait!
