Town Linked With Late Morsy Dash
Sunday, 29th Aug 2021 11:21

Town are being linked with an ambitious late window move for Middlesbrough midfielder Sam Morsy, who captained Paul Cook’s Wigan and Chesterfield sides.

According to the EADT, Town have begun discussions with Boro regarding the 29-year-old, who was shown a straight red card late in yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Blackburn, ahead of Tuesday's 11pm deadline.

While Morsy is a regular for the Teessiders it’s believed the Egyptian international could potentially be available at the right price with manager Neil Warnock having a number of midfield options.

Early in the window, Morsy began following Town on Twitter leading to speculation that a reunion with Cook might be on the cards.

Defensive midfielder Morsy was a youth player with hometown club Wolves and Port Vale where he made his breakthrough into senior football.

Cook took him to the Spireites in July 2013 and helped them to the League Two title in his first season, before he joined the Latics for a fee of £200,000 in January 2016 prior to the Blues boss taking over at the DW Stadium.

Morsy helped Wigan to the League One titles in 2015/16 and under Cook 2017/18.

While a Latic, Morsy spent time on loan at Barnsley and joined Boro in September 2020, signing a three-year deal.

Town’s interest in Brighton keeper Walton, which emerged earlier today, is also said to be further progressed than initially claimed with talks reportedly advanced.

We need a solid defensive midfielder - Skuse always protected our back four - as well as a top goalkeeper. Get these two done and I will have my faith in Cook restored.

Ticks a lot of boxes this one. The type of player I had hoped Evans would be but he hasn't proven it unfortunately. An enforcer is exactly the player Harper needs next to him and we need a more assertive captain IMO.

Yes please.

We need a GK and a DM. Good signings if it happens.

What I like about cook and the new setup is that they are building in a logical order and adopting a no nonsense attitude.

If you don't perform in this team you will be replaced and that is a strong message.

All we need after these two is a decent coach to train them.....

At lead suspended rather than injured

Pennblue - Is Cook applying the strong message to himself? It's too early to get rid but he has unperformed for longer than the new players.

I hope we get them both but Cook seems to go for players who played for him previously. Surely there are others out there that havn`t played for him before? These two would be good signings though.

I do like evans and Harper on the middle but we're lacking that physicality and a real leader. This would be a great signing if we can get it across the line!

If these two are needed ,and performances to date indicate there are quite some gaps and shortfalls to remedy , then what the heck goes on that we are so so late ( if we are ) into the fray - or is it a ‘clever ‘ waiting game ; if so let's hope it pays off !
Increasingly, however , it's presently looking as if the cards in the hand won't enable us to put too many points on the board : have incomers underperformed , have they been disadvantaged somehow, are they simply not up the the task one way or another , have we misread their capabilities and capacity, do they not have the character ?
Afraid all this smacks of some desperate and unfortunate judgements leaving performance palpably short of expectations and requirements .
Can only wish ITFC good luck in adding yet more to the squad ,and effecting critical improvements !

Our recruitment must come under scrutiny if we are still looking to buy midfield players. Watching yesterday's game we definitely struggled with Harper and Evans in midfield. The team is struggling with the 4231 system and big gaps were appearing in midfield as they were in the MK Dons game. When we were two nil up and starting to struggle why didn't we go 451 or 442 and tighten the midfield. Cook seems tactically unnerwhere without his former coach Liam Richardson. Most managers in the premier league would have changed it if it wasn't working.

PC going back to players he knows...I have my doubts the more players he signs the more confused he'll be and a few months of an unsettled starting 11.

Recruitment policy seems to be driven by having previously played for cook does not seem a good policy at moment 🤔

A decent keeper is the most crucial signing .
Hladky should have stopped that late goal, and also so unconvincing with the ball at his feet.
And what's happened to Nolan ?

Sounds good
They tick all the missing boxes hopefully
Should be good to go if they do as it says on the tin.
5 more games for mr cook then, if no signs of improvement/results bye bye b4 too late for playoffs never mind automatic

Do we keep signing players in this window and in Jan until things improve? I'm sceptical whether it will make any difference to be honest as the players we have should be good enough to beat the teams we've played so far with or without gel.

It's like gambling, you lose and then you lose more trying to win it back.

How much did Hladky cost? - bet it was between half and one million. One wonders about the quality of recruitment. In a crisis, as others have pointed out, Cook seems to go back to his ex players. Evans has not so far been as effective as the hype. Without Richardson perhaps Cook's greatest need is in the coaching/tactics department. Remember when he told us he liked to work with small squads - this ones seems even bigger than the Mick/Lambert eras. Not comparing well at present with the Cowley's or the Warne's who have smaller budgets.

At least PC is realising where the problems are and is looking to find solutions. A solid, reliable keeper who commands his box will make the world of deference to the defenders in front of him. A hard working ball winner in midfield is also lacking so get both done asap.

Need a hairy a___d mongrel midfielder and a keeper who doesn't get a nosebleed if he comes off his line. COYB.
