Charlton Boss Garner Charged By FA
Wednesday, 2nd Nov 2022 16:26

Charlton manager Ben Garner has been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E3 following his red card during Saturday’s 4-4 draw with the Blues.

Garner was sent to the stands by referee Josh Smith for taking his protests too far following Town’s second goal.

As he left the field, the former Swindon boss made accusatory gestures towards the official, while also encouraging his club’s fans to get behind their team.

An FA Statement reads: “Charlton Athletic FC’s Ben Garner has been charged with two breaches of FA Rule E3 following their EFL League One game against Ipswich Town FC on Saturday 29th October 2022.

“It’s alleged that the manager’s language and/or behaviour was improper in both the 53rd minute and following his dismissal, and he has until Friday 4ht November 2022 to respond.”

Garner spent much of his post-match press conference castigating referee Smith and the standard of League One refereeing in general.

“Everyone in the stadium can see Dobbo [George Dobson] has got the ball for the free-kick [which led to Town’s second goal],” he said.

“To cap it off, [goalscorer Tyreece John-Jules is] offside from the cross. We get two players booked from it and I got sent off — from the referee getting a decision completely wrong.

“They need to look at themselves. It was like being back at school with the fourth official, every time I tried to speak to him it was like a kid saying he’s going to tell his mum about you. Just stand up and have a conversation — be a man.

“It’s probably a ban and a fine, I don’t know, I’ve never been sent off before. I don’t want that to overshadow what was such an incredible team effort and incredible atmosphere here this afternoon.

“I don’t need a replay. He gets all of the ball — a perfectly-timed tackle. And for the cross he is a yard offside. You can’t get those decisions wrong. There are livelihoods on the line. How much effort we’re giving and the standard of refereeing is nowhere near good enough.

“The referee today spent most of the time before the game telling my staff that he’s a Championship referee. The EFL need to look at that, if that’s the case. He’s not good enough for League One.”

15th April will be a proper atmosphere and ground not half empty at the end!
Another 4 nil at PR!
This result would have hurt us and it will be payback.

Selective Ryland Klopp viewing....... Obviously never saw the blatant handball on the line that should have been a pen and red card. Muppet.

It's funny though isn't it, when we moan about a referee's incompetence almost every other game, that's perfectly okay.

When our manager moans about a referee it is done with appropriate language, measured rationale, and above all a level of dignity that this chump could do well to try and emulate.

I know his team was playing us but he has a point. The standard of referreeing at this level is shocking, as we have found out on more than one occasion this season.

Regardless of anything that happened in this game, he's absolutely 100% correct. The standard of officiating in lge 1 is shocking. Didn't hear him mention anything about the 9 minutes of additional time though!

Needs to distinguish himself by discretion and maturity ,accepting he's not perfect either ! This sort of ill considered rant sets the very worst example for every supporter and for everybody involved at lower levels .
It's a shame his Board can't see their way to publicly declare their distaste and administer reprimands of their own ; but maybe that's asking just too much ??
Football at large needs to find a way to eliminate this truly unacceptable and awful behaviour . I do hope the FA hit him very hard ,and maybe the Club too ; if the rules don't cover the latter ,then set about finding a way .,
J K at L'Pool also set the worst example !

It might not have been the behaviour of a well mannered gentleman, but he got his team & the fans riled up, which kept them fighting & probably resulted in them getting something out of the game. It will probably serve them well going into their next fixtures too. AND, he had a point.
I have far less dislike for him than I've had for a number of other managers over the years.

I can see his point, up to him losing his cool at the ref. That's just undisciplined and disrespectful, and what example does he set for his players or kids watching? I also notice that he wasn't complaining when we didn't get a penalty and the Charlton player sent off for a blatant handball. That would have changed the whole game, but all KMK did was have a word with the ref at halftime, not blow his top. It seems like Charlton could learn from us both on and off the pitch.

The fa will fine him £25 , about time the powers that be started to get a grip on these things.

The decision for our free kick which lead to the second goal was a shocker to be fair, and the 99mins + was justified as we'd wasted a ridiculous amount of time celebrating the two injury time goals plus Keogh coming on. We shot ourselves in the foot with those antics. Garner's parting shot as he went down the tunnel was very amusing.

He has a point about the standard of refereeing, but we should have had a penalty which would have resulted in one of their subsequent goalscorers being sent off, plus Fridge was clearly fouled in the build up to their first

Managers have a responsibility to act in a in a way in which their behaviour doesn't incite bad reactions from supporters. Be passionate and shout etc, but constantly in the officials ears and trying to get players booked is unacceptable. He needs to take example of how to behave from KmcK.

Steve_ITFC_Sweden added 16:42 - Nov 3
I'll take KMcK's rational, analytical approach any day of the week over the boring, one-sided "We wuz robbed" traditional rant that so many managers seem to come out with. Not that it does them any good.
