Town Make Taylor Enquiry
Thursday, 22nd Dec 2022 10:09

TWTD understands Town have made an enquiry regarding Peterborough United midfielder Jack Taylor.

Football League World is reporting that the Blues have made a bid for the 24-year-old, however, while Town have made an approach and the clubs have spoken about the player, the interest has not yet reached that level.

We understand Taylor is among a number of names on a Town short-list of possible January midfield recruits.

Yesterday, TWTD revealed that former loanee Massimo Luongo is spending a few days training at Playford Road with the Australian international’s Middlesbrough contract up in January.

Taylor was previously linked with the Blues in the summer when Posh director of football Barry Fry put a £10 million price-tag on his player's head and said there had been no contact from the Blues.

Versatile midfielder Taylor joined Posh for an initial £500,000 from Barnet in January 2020 with the fee likely to have increased towards £1 million with top-ups.

Hammersmith-born Taylor has since made 103 starts and eight sub appearances for Posh, scoring 16 times.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony revealed in the summer of 2020 that his club had received a bid for Taylor of £2 million from an unnamed club and Posh will be looking for a significant fee for the one-time Chelsea academy youngster, whose contract is believed to run to the summer of 2024, although a sum unlikely to be anywhere near Fry's £10 million figure.

Taylor, who spent time on loan at Hampton and Richmond while with the Bees, qualifies for the Republic of Ireland via his grandfather and has been capped at U21 level. He received his first senior call in November 2020 but is yet to make an appearance at full international level.

No chance.

If past acquisitions are anything to go by then it's a no from me, we seem to pay way over the odds for players from them ending up with no end product.

Good player, that is well capable of playing at Championship level. Given that he still has 18 months left on his contract, we'd probably be looking at a fee around the £2m mark for him alright though.

Steelmonkey - that's definitely the way to plan your transfers, previous players haven't worked out from them, so never sign anyone else!

I suppose we're looking at the upside here - good age, potential for further development, increased sell-on value and immediate impact on the team.

But there do seem to be a few caveats that make it less attractive - mainly that they hate selling to us so it's going to be a big, big fee to make it happen.

I believe this current regime are far better at negotiations for players than under the Evans regime. They'll have a value that they are prepared to pay and no more. I'm confident that they'll get the players in come January.

So let's put a joint £5-6m bid in for him and clarke harris? Gotta be worth trying, with Harris, apparently unhappy there.

We need a playmaker capable of unlocking defences and a top class defender...striker needs to be high class if we get one and we may need to wait until promotion to get the right one as they command the big money ..if you get the playmaker our current forwards will get better opportunities in front of goal...top players always more difficult to come by in January and if they are available then you will pay top dollar for them ...I'm sure our homework has been done though ...

Very good player, who would add value now, it also future seasons. You would think the fee would be too much at this level though and that's despite our backing. There will be a limit.

Encouraging reel on YouTube.

Very confident shooting finding the net anywhere between 10-30 yards which could be single biggest reason we're looking, but also looks strong and quick, competitive, and intelligent.

McKenna building a squad with versatility to get points against totally different types of teams in League 1 and Championship imo, which is something ITFC have rarely, if ever, had and is needed for faster success in modern era

Signing a Taylor from Peterborough for an inflated fee? What could possibly go wrong...

I would have thought we have far more important positions to fill as a matter of urgency if we want promotion

I was disappointed we didn't get him in the summer, he'd be a great fit in our squad. One of the missing links in shooting on site and creating for others. Unfortunately the downside is he plays for Peterborough and they always overvalue their players in the hope someone is desperate enough to except. Maybe tempt them with players too. Time for some hard talks but be prepared to walk away and look elsewhere, if it seems we are wasting our time. I think Taylor would jump at the chance to make the next step up in his career and join us.

The fact we're interested in signing a midfielder seems to suggest that Camara is still a long way off being fit. Would be a better bet than Luongo as he's been playing regularly for Posh and performed ok in the championship last season and is still at a young age. Having said this i can't see this happening if posh want over 2 million for him.

Same comment as yesterday really, give me a nudge when hes signed and pictured with Mark Ashton.

In the last 18 months, only Rakeem Harper and Leif Davis have been mentioned in advance, and then only when the clubs involved disclosed the bids and/or our involvement with players running out of contract.

Probably a great player, and probably a very effective red herring leaked from sources close to the club to distract us from whats probably going on elsewhere.

Smoke and mirrors at this stage. Expect us to sign 2 players out of the blue in the first few days, and unlikely to be anyone from the chavs up there in Peterborough.
