Tomasson: First Half Cost Us the Game
Saturday, 23rd Sep 2023 20:36

Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson felt all four Town goals were preventable following his side’s 4-3 loss to the Blues at Portman Road.

Rovers pulled the game back to 1-1 and 3-3 having been 3-1 down at half-time before Massimo Luongo netted Town’s winner with 11 minutes left on the clock.

“It’s very clear, we didn’t win our duals, we were too late, we played too slow and we gave the ball away,” Tomasson told The Lancashire Telegraph.

“We gave the ball away and we gave three unnecessary goals away in that first half. It was not a good half.

“I think the second half was the Rovers you have seen this season and credit to the lads for that.

“We are a young team and we are trying to develop over the year, that’s why I am pleased with the second half and that we created so many chances.

“They have been extremely solid and that is really good. When you lose games and you give away a lot of unnecessary goals, we can’t be happy with that.

“When you’re chasing the game it’s different but if you look at the first goal, we have everyone in our box. The second is a long ball that we didn’t clear very well and the third wasn’t a transition moment.”

He added: “We are disappointed with the result. We knew Ipswich would be tough, they have an excellent record at home and they have started extremely well in the Championship.

“The first half cost us the game. We were not quick enough on the ball, not moving quick enough. The distance of the team and coming into duals was not what I wanted.

“You saw in the second half, the Blackburn Rovers you normally see. We showed a good resilience and a good performance.

“It’s tough scoring three goals away and not getting a result, especially with the last goal.

“All four goals were preventable. Credit to the boys and the second half and the fans for travelling for the team.”

Totally enjoyable game. Don't beat yourself up about today Jon, you aren't going to play much better than us.

…… as we’re all three Blackburn goals preventable . A tale of two attacks vs two defences.

The words of a genuine football man ,who like KM is quite dedicated to the sort of energy, style and honest endeavour he wants to see from his team !
Disappointment echoes through each and every utterance ,but pride in performance too !
How well we did to overcome such a good opponent!

Indeed.. we know what you mean… we were just in a match when we conceded 3 goals that were all definitely preventable too…

Hoppy, totally agree.
I thought we were the better side but of course I am biased.
It is good that opposition managers pay us a great deal of respect, after all we are newly promoted from League 1

All goals are preventable! But it’s having the style and desire to score them that wins matches.
The trouble for most other sides inthis league is that we have players that can score taking advantage of poor defending.
Wasn’t Jon a good player!

An accurate and honest assessment except that in theory all goals are preventable but some are less preventable than others. Our goals came from invention and skill. One of their goals came from flair but the others came when we allowed them to by pass our press. That is preventable but it is also what football is about. It’s not the same as chess !

He’s done an outstanding job at Blackburn in one season just missing the playoffs by a sliver with quite a young side under the Venkey headcases.

They certainly looked a very good footballing side with higher possession stats than us!!!

Would bet he is name on Ashton’s dashboard if the unthinkable loss of KMck were to happen prematurely.

Really well articulated, however, he left out the bit where we should have scored 6 goals in that first half. We were great and the Blackburn defence was awful.

2nd half they stepped up and we dropped off - we can't let teams free run from their centre half to our left back position without being challenged and expect not to concede, but so good the boys stepped up and got the win.

Hutinson also looks different gravy!

State the obvious, of course conceding goals can cost games! Nearly every goal in every game ever played could have been avoided if the conceding team played it differently in the lead upto the goal. Our defending was poor at times which ultimitely lead to us conceding. There is a remedy for this though, if you are going to concede just make sure you score more than the other team.

Really looking forward to seeing Norwich work mates! Do weekends get any better? A cracking entertaining 4-3 win to keep us in the top 2 and Norwich getting humiliated!

This must be the best start to a championship season by a newly promoted side!

Dissboyitfc it literally is the best Championship start by a promoted side - yesterday we exceeded Southampton’s start in 2010/11 (I think). Accurate assessment by Tomasson imo. They were excellent and massive credit to Tomasson and his players for being brave enough to stick to their attacking principles. What a game. COYB.

They're a slick passing side and they cut us open for a couple of their goals - but I thought they were too quick at times, it was all one touch stuff when maybe slowing it down a bit would have allowed better decisions. Very quick moving forward, but so were we. Taking nothing away from a spirited Town performance and 3 more points. Bouncing. COYB

bakerblue I just checked out Southampton season 2010/11, it was the season after where they won 6 drew 1 and lost 1(19 points) in their first 8 games!

Certainly an amazing start!

When you look at any match nearly all the goals are preventable if you go back far enough. A missed challenge, an intercepted pass, bad positioning, backing off too much etc etc. It always strikes me as a silly statement. Norwich fans are blaming bad referees for their defeats because apparently no other team in the league has had a single bad decision against them. Excuses mean nothing because you can never completely eliminate mistakes. Town just keep on doing what they do and believing in themselves.

I read the fans forum of every opposing team days before we face them and let me tell you the occurring theme!
They do not rate any of our players and claim like for like we are not good but play as a team!!!

That is bull! We have awesome individual players and a team! My only concern is that we are a touch soft at the back! 7 goals conceded in the last two home games! But dam it is so good to watch
