Röhl: Johnson Talks Ongoing
Sunday, 28th Jan 2024 09:38

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Röhl has revealed conversations are continuing regarding the Blues’ interest in Owls left-back Marvin Johnson.

News that Town had made an approach to sign the 33-year-old emerged just over a week ago, the Blues having proposed a deal which would have seen nothing paid up front but with incentive payments due to the South Yorkshire club later on down the line.

“They are still in conversation, but it is clear from my side. Honestly, to release such a player would be hard. We want to keep him, but for sure it depends,” Röhl told the Sheffield Star.

“Everybody must now that he is a starter for our side, it is about good performance. You cannot come to Wednesday and bring nothing.

“If you want such a player then it means you have to invest. This is a clear message from our side that if a club want to take one of our starters then you cannot ask to do it for free. We will see what happens in the end.”

Johnson was initially left out of the Owls’ EFL squad in the summer by former boss Xisco but was brought back into the fold by Röhl in November and has become a key member of his squad, scoring three times and picking up two assists from left-back.

Röhl added: “All in all, if Marvin is still part of our team and if he is still here then he will go again. He knows that a few weeks ago he was far away. I took him, I gave him self-confidence and we are very honest with each other.

“He is very thankful that I gave him the opportunity to come back and sometimes it is also important to have this relationship."

Meanwhile, Blackburn have been linked with a move for Swansea striker Jerry Yates, which could free-up Sam Gallagher to join the Blues.

Rovers have been unwilling to accept a Town offer for Gallagher, who is very keen to move to Portman Road, but recruiting Yates could facilitate that switch.

According to reports, the Lancastrians want to sign Yates on loan but the Swans would prefer a permanent sale. The transfer window closes at 11pm on Thursday evening.

I really don’t think we should be signing a 33 year old full back even as a stop gap. Surely we can do better than that

We need a young striker who knows where the net is in the premier league but wonder who that will be!

KM's not made many bad decisions but he has made a few...letting Greg Leigh go was one of his biggest errors imho.

I know we can't disclose this type of thing as it gives competitive/negotiation advantage to other teams but I'd be really interested in knowing how close we are in terms of FFP rules come the end of the season... We haven't that many big money earners in the team, haven't paid loads of money for anyone yet we get very decent crowds and sell loads of Merch... I do wonder if sometimes people think be a very tough negotiator is more important than paying slightly over the odds for what we.

Greg Leigh wasn’t one for keeping here in my opinion

We’ve been caught with our isn’t a down regarding strikers I feel. Why the he’ll we’ve allowed Ladapo to leave before we’ve secured another striker god only knows.

Not sure why we’re after a 33yr old either, anyone know?

The lad from Wimbledon I’d assume is “ one for the future” rather than a direct GH replacement. We’ve been unable to get our apparent primary targets . NONE of this should be done in a January window . Clubs know we’re desperate and up goes the price of simply “ not available “ reply.

Ladapo, leigh wanted minutes which they where not getting! So what do you do let them go and take a fee also reducing the wage bill which is important in FFP rules! Or do you keep them and run the risk of them being unhappy then moody and unbalanced the dressing room!
Greg leigh was a very good left sided fullback in my opinion
Ladapo not a very good striker in top end of the championship so what are you supposed to do?
Also the club have 54 anaylsists eventually saying the KM 'e r we found someone' not as straight forward as we all think! We have made the same amount of bad decisions aswell as good ones! Now thar is a fact

I wish people would stop panicking about strikers. KM stated yesterday he hopes to have two in early next week. He knows whats happening, we don't. Phil never ever reports nonsense, the article friday sates clearly we are bidding on two. Transfers don't happen over the weekend either.
Ladapo hadn't featured for weeks, other than as a late sub to make up the numbers, theres way more to the timing of his exit than we should talk about on here.
Trust the manager and the CEO to bring in the players in time for Preston and have a think about why Jackson wasn't involved yesterday at all when you start thinking about how many players we will move out this week to hit the 25 man limit. Keep in mind our two youngsters don't count in the 25, so there will be numbers moving out in numbers too.

Lighteningboy: I agree 100% with you on Greg Leigh . But I suppose we should factor in a players desire to want regular football . This I think probably also influenced Ladapo’s departure so early in window.

All the top teams in the championship are looking for a striker except the three teams that came down from the premier league. How many of them have actually bought one? The problem is not just ours. We do need a goal scorer but if we get one are we guaranteed PL football next season.
It seems that we can at best recruit a championship striker or a young up and coming one for the future. The problem is and always has been rich PL clubs having a surfeit of strikers who don’t play regularly just so the other teams can’t have them

Dont get this one , hope it does not mean Lief Davis is being sold ?

SickParrot added 16:23 - Jan 28
As long as it's only a small fee it's a no brainer for me. Davis' level has dropped off, we need competition/cover in that position and Johnson is a good player. I still think we will also sign two centre forwards including the lad from Wimbledon (but only if we can get him for just over a million). I said this when Ladapo's loan was confirmed but it was foolish to let him go before we had signed a replacement. We do need someone better than him going forward but he would have been useful yesterday. Also, having let him go, it's obvious to any selling club that we have to sign somebody, so the price goes up!

Left backs, are we missing something here ? this fella and the Hearts lad !! Is Davis off to the hammers ? Bringing in funds for strikers ?

Ladapo was barely coming on from the bench. We can’t have a main striker who doesn’t press.
As for the window, I remember a lot of ill-informed sh*tty comments last January and look how wise those comments turned out to be. This time it’s even more difficult because we are window shopping at Harrods with a Poundland budget. Why are the relegated clubs able to buy new players on premier league wages wtf is FFP about that.

Get the fella from Maidstone who can finish in style. He’ll cost next to nothing. Get that Corn bloke as well

If you look at the players brought in some have very limited game time for the years that they have been playing. Hurst Davis and Broadhurst are in this category so it will be hard for them to deliver solid 8/10 performances as provided by Morsy . The same applies to the loanees. I think that there is bound to be a drop off from the astonishing form to date.
