Blues Target Johnson Turns Down New West Ham Deal Tuesday, 25th Jun 2024 10:58
Blues target Ben Johnson has turned down the offer of a new five-year deal at West Ham United with a move to Portman Road looking more and more on the cards.
ExWHUEmployee, a usually reliable Hammers source, is reporting that the 24-year-old right-back has rejected the new terms at the London Stadium and is close to joining the Blues on a free transfer.
TWTD understands no deal is yet agreed or signed with Town with Johnson still a West Ham player until the end of the month.
However, with talks ongoing, it appears increasingly likely that the former England U21 international, who can also operate at left-back, could join the Blues ahead of their return to the Premier League.
The Town squad is back in for the start of pre-season training proper on Monday.
Johnson was first linked with the Blues in April when Town sources played the down having any interest.
The Waltham Forest-born, Chigwell-raised full-back came through the academy ranks at West Ham - where he worked with former Town youth coaches Terry Westley and Liam Manning - after joining the club aged seven and made 70 starts and 39 sub appearances, scoring twice.
Plenty of other clubs have been linked with Johnson in recent weeks, among them Tottenham, Crystal Palace, Southampton, Rangers, Leeds, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton.

Sounds like exactly the sort of player we need. Not going to rock the applecart but with good experience at prem league level and a great age for a free out of contract transfer. Assume he is a right back?
It sounds like a strange move for him, why turn down a 5 year deal at an established Premier League team that is also his academy. But you can only imagine, he's coming to us because of McKenna and what we are building. This would be a great signing, and a signal to other players that we are building something special.
Seems strange WHU have only offered a new deal now that it’s running out? I guess it must have been on the table awhile or WHU realised they were gonna lose him and have panicked a bit ??
Europablue. What's strange about it? He wants to play football. Something he's not been doing that much at west ham recently. Clearly putting his playing time ahead of money, etc. Good to see a player who's more interested in playing, than anything else. It's rare these days.
Would be very happy with this signing and understand why we would target him. I’m less convinced we’re looking at a 1 year deal for Alexis Sanchez though!!
Being linked with some decent Premier League clubs like Palace, Tottenham, Lee..(oh sorry), suggests that he is a decent player. We need quality additions in many positions and we can´t spend £20m on every player. Excellent business if he comes here.
Personally love the look of this one, feels like it's reliably sourced and obviously without a fee it means we can offer him a decent contract too. Whilst I expect us to spend well this summer, the nous to have free agents joining us is a clear sign our recruitment system is intelligent and just not all about big fees!
My WHU supporting mate says Johnson made a promising start but has stalled because of lack of game time. down the pecking order but just the type McKenna can improve.
This guy is awful. I have seen West Ham a lot in recent years, as I have ties to East London. He couldn't get a regular start in Moyes' drab team, so one to avoid.
I actually joked with my West Ham friends that we would be after him if we got promoted, and they all laughed and said "please take him!"
I'm hearing rumours that West Ham have made an £8M bid for our Chappers. Seems they're in a huff about Johnson rejecting them and taking the piddle with us. Should we stick a £10M offer in for Jarrod Bowen to really rub it in?
This 5 yr contract by WHU, but likely minimal intention to play him, underlines all that is wrong with the PL these days Town should be blue to scoop up one or two decent players like this one, and these young players will play in the first team, and be a step up from what we already have.
Not pre empting anything here , well yes ok, I am… Welcome to Town , young man.
This guy could be fantastic for us with the right coaching but obviously struggled to hold down a place in a poor West Ham team but that's no reflection on him just the basket case that is West Ham. As for why they offered him a 5 yr deal? Probably cheaper than having to go out and buy another young English fullback premiership ready.
If we can get him in front of all the other clubs that are supposed to be interested, then that would be quite a statement. Seems a versatile player who can fulfil a number of roles at the back. I trust Kieran on this.
Well, at 24, Johnson has been playing fewer games at West Ham in the last 2 seasons so maybe he feels he should be making his mark elsewhere. Still amazed if we can offer similar terms to West Ham, but he would be a great addition for the right back position.
