Town and Blackburn in Szmodics Talks Friday, 12th Jul 2024 17:39 TWTD understands Town are in talks with Blackburn Rovers regarding forward Sammie Szmodics.
The 28-year-old is a player the Blues have eyed in the last couple of windows and we understand a fee in the region of £6 million plus add-ons is under discussion. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue.
Born in Colchester, the four-times-capped Republic of Ireland international came through the youth ranks with the U’s before breaking into their first team in 2013 prior to a spell on loan in non-league with Braintree.
A move to Bristol City, where Blues CEO Mark Ashton was then in charge, followed in 2019, prior to a switch to Peterborough, initially on loan, before he joined Blackburn in August 2022.
Last season, the forward was top scorer in the Championship with 27 goals, leading to his first international call-ups.
By coincidence, like the Blues, Blackburn have a training camp in Austria next week.
Town are continuing to work on tying up the loose ends on the signings of Liam Delap and Jacob Greaves ahead of the trip.
Fees and personal terms are agreed for both but with some of the formalities relating to the moves still to be rubberstamped.

Nice to see an overall picture of a plan B from those in charge. JP doesn’t work out in timely fashion so it is on to the next potential acquisition. Well done ITFC.

Dyersdream he is actually a west ham fan not Ipswich as I've spoke to his family at Ewood.

He would be a great signing but I can't believe we will get him for 6 million. Blackburn will be aware that we were prepared to pay 18 million for Philogene and although Szmodics is older he is only 28 and was arguably the stand out player in the Championship last season. I would expect other Premier League clubs to be after him, so I think 15cmillion would be more realistic. If we can get him for less that would be great.

To people downvoting my earlier post about being a one season wonder. The stats don’t lie!!

Good buy provided we get him. Sick of the Philogene drama and let's hope for less over this deal.

I see a stupid comment above (you know who you are) saying szmodics was a one season wonder....you do not score 27 goals in a season in the championship in a poor Blackburn team if your not a good player. Just think what he can do under km playing along side morsy . What an absolutely stupid dumb ass statement to make.

No doubt downvoted here and although I would be far from upset if this happened my excitement is somewhat less than most for this. Undeniably he had a awesome season last year but every season in all divisions there are players that everything clicks for that 1 season and is never repeated. At 28 it seems bizarre it's taken so long to be so good if he is indeed is 'so good'. All that said he seems a hard worker and I fully trust KmC but thinking his goal output would ever be anywhere near last seasons whatever division he is in would be naive imo. Go easy on me!

While he is really a #10, from memory I see a lot of his best work, & indeed goals, coming down the left side, so maybe it's another case of us looking to sign a player who is quite versatile & can slot in anywhere across the 3 attacking positions behind the centre forward. Similarly he would be effective if we return to twin #10s, should we need an extra body in midfield. What I am liking about the players we are targetting (including Philogene), is that they are goalscorers; we will once more need to be side that has goals all through it. We know about Omari, but Delap too was seen as a good finisher when he was in City's B team; a good run without injury could see him hit a good number this season too. Szmodics is a great finisher, but also a very clever footballer, who puts in a shift. At 28 he is at his peak now & has become an international with Ireland, so his confidence should be sky high.

Dyersdream he played for Col utd and has always had a dig at us and normally scored against us for other clubs but that’s part of being a pantomine local lad villain. His dad and brother drink at my local so had this convo with them in the past it’s not hate it to wind fans up. If Ashton gets this guy for 6 million just give him the keys to the city now ffs. That would be an absolute steal considering he was being muted at 15 million end of last season and West Ham were interested.

I just don’t feel he will make the step up, but sometimes last resort signings work out.
ArmaghBlue added 22:14 - Jul 12
@BlueBullet Daryl Murphy also scored 27 goals in his freak season.

Armaghblue what makes you think he’s a ‘last resort’ rarely do we make decisions like that?? How do you know he wasn’t being spoken to same time as the others anyway? McKenna wanted him last couple of windows. At least get some facts before spouting off tripe

Always liked Sammie even when he played for Southend. He was my pick before the window opened.

Why are some questioning his goals to games ratio, he is an attacking midfielder with over 100 goals in 300 odd games, that's good, better than some strikers, just did some sums and in fact his goals to games ratio is approx 3.3 per game the same as Daryl Murphy. Smodizcs reminds me of and is a similar player to Alan Judge who's record ( I just checked) was 7.6 games per goal! This would be an excellent signing and not silly money either!

Very decent player .Has been for years .The fact he got a hatfull of ggoals last season is a bonus.Hes an attacking midfielder not a striker .Blackburn played him more advanced and it worked .We won't but so what he's a good player and won't be brought in to score 20 goals . Brilliant buy if only 6m , thought he should be worth near 15 .Not a Philogene but sure he can play as an 8 or left wiger if needed .
