U18s Coach Lee Set to Join Norwich
Monday, 21st Oct 2024 12:12

TWTD understands Blues U18s lead coach Olly Lee is set to join the staff at Norwich City’s academy.

Former Luton, Gillingham, Hearts and Birmingham midfielder Lee, 33, only took on his role at Playford Road in January having previously been working in Tottenham’s youth set-up.

We understand David Wright has been working with Matt Pooley with the U18s in addition to his U21s role as an interim measure ahead of Lee’s departure and the appointment of a replacement.

Lee, the son of former England, Charlton, Newcastle and West Ham midfielder Robert, took on the job from Callum Tongue, who departed in November last year for a recruitment role at Manchester United having only been at the club since the previous March.

Sam Darlow had previously been in the role and left the club in July 2023 for Nottingham Forest, where he is coaching the U18s and U21s.

Darlow had succeeded the long-serving Adem Atay, who joined Aston Villa in July 2022, working with their U18s, a position the still-locally-based former Blues academy midfielder opted to leave at the end of last year. Atay is now working at Norwich with their U16s.

Town recently appointed former Colchester director of football Dmitri Halajko as their new academy director.

These academy folk seem to move around a lot.
Are the ones we are losing taking the training or are they heading up the department and more into the leadership/ admin.

At 33 years of age, seems an odd time to be having a mid-life crisis.

As I may have said before, to me he sounds like the place where Puff the Magic Dragon lived.

Don't know what's going on at our academy but it's a shambles nobody stops there five minutes and we are not producing any promising youngsters of any note.

Going on our fourth U-18 managers since July 2022....that can't be normal, or good for development.

Something is not right ? - too many exits from this level at the Club, worse still is the fact that it seems that all Norwich have to do is call …. !!!
Doesn’t bode well for stability at a crucial level at the Club.
What is the problem ?? - there has to be something that doesn’t fit these personal departures ?

Perhaps he likes slumming it.
And to all the Budgies reading this I'm sure he will adjust to the lower level quickly.
