PGMOL: Webb Town Meeting Private
Thursday, 7th Nov 2024 19:29

Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) says their chief refereeing officer Howard Webb’s Portman Road meeting with Blues CEO and chairman Mark Ashton will remain private.

Ashton revealed on Monday that Webb had agreed to travel to Suffolk for a meeting following a frank post-match phone discussion regarding referee Tim Robinson’s failure to award a penalty for a foul on Conor Chaplin during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester and then moments later red card Kalvin Phillips for a soft second bookable offence.

We understand Webb was at the club yesterday lunchtime for the meeting, the details of which the PGMOL says it won’t be commenting upon.

“The contents of the meeting between ourselves and Ipswich Town will remain private.” a spokesperson told BBC Suffolk in a statement. Town in turn say the conversation will “remain confidential”.

Referee Robinson is not taking charge of a Premier League game this weekend, instead he is the VAR official for the Nottingham Forest-Newcastle clash on Sunday.

Of course it will remain private. Hardly going to broadcast to the world that a ‘small’ club has dared to stand up to them for being consistently inadequate.

Well, that's not going to allay fans' fears of a conspiracy is it? How refreshing would it be if PGMOL had issued an apolgy for the blatent error in not awarding a penalty - and rescinded the red card as a gesture of good will!

Absolutely ZERO will change as a result of it.

Good luck to both Forest and Newcastle if anything goes to VAR, goodness knows what decisions might be made……

Not surprising they want it kept under wraps but I expect MA will inform supporters that he put his point across and that we'll have to see what comes of it. No point telling supporters he was p***ed off and was calling Webb in if not.

The ITFC way is to be and remain ethical and honest in all their dealings ; if MA has agreed confidentiality then it will be —-for at least the time being ! Woe betide the PGMOL if it transpires understandings do get broken ,or such dire performances continue .
Players ,Club Management ,and above all supporters need to be brought in to the equation ,for the game ,spirit and pleasure is being sucked dry ; everyone ,from the bottom up, needs to be considered and communicated with .
The PGMOL must be brought to heel ,and understand they are a vital part of what most of us still regard as our sport AND should not try cold isolation !
Have some courage ,Howard Webb ! Feel the obligation on your shoulders ; and if only in general terms EXPLAIN ,more often ! Weakness does not inspire respect !

Warwickblue, to be fair to Webb he has apologised on numerous occasions when VAR has got it wrong. He obviously doesn't believe it has on this one.

As for only big teams benefit are we all forgetting the most blatantly wrong decision was against Liverpool, chalking off a perfectly good goal.

The whole thing with VAR is opaque, you don't know what they're looking at, or what they're saying to each other. Such a contrast to cricket and rugby.

The EPL makes millions because of the supporters who attend games and the fans who watch on tv. Why then are the very people who fund the game though tv subscriptions, merchandise and ticket money not entitled to hear explanations or answers to complaints?

Mark Ashton is not someone who will let things lie, if things continue as they have I can imagine him mobilising quite a force behind him.

They are walking a very thin tightrope from here on.

I know we're only "little old ipswich" but Can you imagine the fallout next time VAR get it totally wrong against us ?

it's surely only a matter of time...........

it is well known some refs are not there for the good of th game but to satisfy their own egos that applies from top to bottom and will neverchange!

BlueinBoston. Think it's,quite possible Webb may well have apologised to the club in private. Sozdont think there's really any suggestion he doesn't think they got it wrong. Guess we'll never know tho.

I was expecting total transparency from an industry based on fair play and sporting merit.

Anyway, I'm sure there's no corruption or bias involved and the reason for privacy is...

...well, actually, I can't think of any reason for privacy if everything is above board but there must be a reason, obviously, I mean this is England - you won't find corruption here and most certainly not in the beautiful game.

Corruption and bias are what we accuse other countries of - it's simply not in our culture.

Time to admit we were wrong, trust the system and get on with allowing the bigger clubs to get all the benefits and advantages they have earned.

If the Officials close ranks and say that was not a foul on Chaplin god help football. It was a nailed on penalty!

Also what about the foul on Morsy near the half way line....come on Officials do your job. Linesmen seem redundant in the Premiership!

VAR is ruining the entertainment value of the game and in its present state not fit for purpose!

Did anyone else watch on uTube the 'live' VAR at St. James Park in Newcastle's last home game. They checked Newcastle's goal which was eventually allowed, correctly so, just a customery check for offside in the lead up to the goal etc. but I have to say that the officials seemed very frantic, regularly spoke over each other and in no way we're calm and collected. Even given that the referee had been running and a little out of breath, they seemed, as a collective very disorganised with no one in particular taking the lead or orchestrating calm discussion - and this VAR review was an easy one! If any one watches this on uTube I think they will agree that it does not instill confidence in the process.

Blueinboston this meeting wasn’t only about the Leicester game, but all the inconsistencies over the season so far. So wouldn’t expect him to apologise for everything! Easy to say sorry we got one wrong, but to admit to a catalogue of mistakes and apologise? Can’t really see that happening.

I really don’t know what to say about all this, you would think that Leicester might be on the receiving end of some dodgy decisions when you consider how they got away with the financial fair play cheating.

I emailed the PGMOL re the match official Robinson. I haven't even had the decency of an acknowledgement, I did inform ITFC & got one the same day. The PGMOL is a closed shop & the refs employed all stick together. The idiot interviewed by Warnock on Sky wouldn't answer his questions but talked around them like a politician, by his body language he looked extremely uncomfortable & he knows very well the wrong calls were made. Too many ref's are trying to become personalities, I'd prefer much stricter refereeing as in rugby where only the captain can actually query decisions (I know this is supposed to be the case), simulation is a bookable offence & ref's actually do the job they are employed to do. Why can't we hear what the official s are saying either? It happens in top class rugby, there is absolutely no way Robinson missed the incident so he is either totally inept or corrupt. Perhaps an investigation into Malaysian betting also needs to be looked at. I doubt MA'S stance will have any impact apart from ref's taking an even more biased approach to us. Money rules the game now & unless Man City get a huge penalty for corruption there ceases to be much point in the PL continuing.
