Burgess: Jota's Squeal May Have Won Penalty
Saturday, 30th Nov 2024 22:24

Blues centre-half Cameron Burgess believes Nottingham Forest winger Jota Silva’s loud noise and squeal as he went down in a heap inside the Town box may have been what won his side the penalty which secured their 1-0 victory at the City Ground.

Burgess says Sammie Szmodics insisted he made no contact with the Portuguese winger, who threw himself to the ground to win the spot-kick as he went past the Irish international shortly after half-time.

Referee Tony Harrington pointed to the spot and VAR upheld the decision before Chris Wood smashed the penalty into the roof of the net.

“Szmods didn't think he'd got him. I haven’t seen it. He went down in a heap and made a loud noise and a squeal, they sometimes get given because of that,” Burgess told BBC Sport

“We showed our fitness levels to go right to the end of the game. it's all about improving and working hard. I think we can keep going the way we’re going and keep improving.”

I wonder if a goalie just decided pre match which way he was going to dive if there was a penalty would the odds of a save increase ?

Or better still stand up and wait for it to be kicked before going down

A soft penalty that. I haven't watched it back yet, but seemed soft from my vantage point. Thought VAR would over rule it, but alas, they haven't got a clue what they are doing. We had enough of the game to get at least point, so not all bad news. We dust ourselves down and go again. We are showing we have enough in the squad to survive, which is the most encouraging thing.

Kelleher at L'pool seems to be a master at saving penos. He holds his nerve and reacts when the ball is struck. @bobble, if Muric or any GK can hold out for a fraction longer it could make the difference

was a penalty, but I wouldn’t want any player of our team squealing like that

SS touched enough of his foot to make it difficult not to give a penalty but no way did it hurt,
A stupid challenge when SS is facing our goal and seeing how much traffic there was between Silva and our goal got what we deserved, stupid challenge that wasn't needed, can't sugar coat that I'm afraid,

In todays game it was a penalty, soft but we want it given in favour. As others say it was a silly challenge to make, small moment / decision that has cost us.

The Forest player was surrounded by blue shirts and was obviously looking to make a meal out of any contact as he would never have got a shot away. Poor challenge by Szmodics as it gave their player the opportunity to make his swallow dive and gave the ref a decision to make, which he was pleased to do. VAR hopeless as usual. Compare that to the Chaplin 'penalty' against Leicester where he had a clear shooting opportunity denied by the player who bundled him over. Unfortunately, cheats prosper in this league and VAR condones it.

Jota : foot tickled= penalty upheld by VAR
Chaplin: shoved over= no penalty
Clarke: foot touched= penalty but VAR overruled
Where the Jeffrey is the consistency?

Jota spent more time rolling around on the floor than on his feet...plus he's got one of the worst hairstyles i've ever seen on a man.

Given that we tapped up Burley, Butcher and Osman for a pep talk a while back, perhaps we should get Muric (and all the keepers) over to Tenerife to a round of golf with Paul Cooper, the "Penalty King"
