Town Women Denied Return to Top as Game Abandoned
Sunday, 26th Jan 2025 14:18

Ipswich Town Women’s FAWNL Southern Premier Division game away against Gwalia United was abandoned due to a waterlogged pitch at half-time with the Blues 2-0 in front.

Sophie Peskett had netted in the eighth and 12th minute to give Joe Sheehan’s side a comfortable lead at the break at the Newport Stadium.

However, the match was brought to an early end due to the state of the surface.

The Blues were on course to return to the top of the table with Hashtag United, currently first by three points but having played three more games than Town and with a worse goal difference, not in action today.

It’s the second time the fixture has succumbed to the weather with the match postponed 10 minutes before the scheduled kick-off back in September.

The Blues now face a third trip to Wales on a date yet to be scheduled.

Town: Negri, Mitchell, Boswell (c), Wearing, Barker, Robertson, Garrad, Watson, O’Brien, Peskett, Fisher. Subs: Hartley, Addison, Bonwick, Bowyer, Hughes, Rutherford, Thomas.

Bit of a farce: did anyone who went think either the ref was a bit soft,, or that maybe Gwalia/Newport just didn't give the pitch enough attention pre match?

That's the second time this season ITFC Women have had a wasted trip to Wales! Why don't they look at the weather forecast the day before and postpone it to save everyone travelling? Teams in this league only play 11 home matches a season, so surely they can avoid playing on days when heavy rain is forecast given they know the pitches are prone to waterlogging.

Edmundo. The pitch was playable at kick off. About 10 minutes before half time the rain became very heavy and water was pooling on the surface in several places. Clearly unplayable at this point and was called off before the second half started. With hindsight given the weather forecast it could have been shifted to the all weather pitch which Gwalia used to play on

Gwalia claimed that no all weather pitch was available.
Therefore the real question is, given the weather forecast for today, should the match have been postponed yesterday to prevent team and supporters travelling?
We did this for Exeter last year when F&W pitch was potentially playable but weather forecast would have seen a deterioration of playing conditions.

The league and home teams should be able to schedule around bad weather much more effectively than this. Or find more suitable venues. This is beyond a joke now for our girls. Fingers crossed they stay focused. Am sure they will and finally escape this rather Micky Mouse division.

I left the Swansea area at 11am to drive back to Ipswich and it had been lashing down for an hour or so before I left and continued to do so all the way up through Wales.

I am surprised that they managed to get the game started.

Another annoying thing is that it starts 0-0 again, I'm sure that in Spain they just pick up where they were, seems much fairer...
