Bruce: Baggott Outstanding
Monday, 27th Jan 2025 10:36

On-loan Blues central defender Elkan Baggott was “outstanding”, according to Blackpool head coach Steve Bruce, the Indonesia international having made his first League One start since mid-August as the Seasiders won 3-1 at Exeter on Saturday.

Baggott, 22, was sidelined with an ankle injury for two months, then having made a 45-minute return in the EFL Cup was ruled out again with a thigh problem.

He made his comeback as a 55th-minute sub for former Blues loanee Matthew Pennington last Saturday and stepped in to make only his third league start for the Tangerines at the weekend, impressing his boss, a centre-half during his playing days.

“He was outstanding,” he told the Blackpool Gazette “He’s just had to wait because he’s been unfortunate with injury, but he stepped in terrifically well.

“Fair play to him, he keeps himself in really good nick. To work as hard as he has done day in, day out with two big injuries, then fair play to him. Today was his reward.

“He gives us a nice balance because he’s left-footed, so that’s very good. He’s helped us enormously.”

The Colchester-raised defender, whose Town contract is up this summer but with the club having an option for a further year, is on a season-long loan at Bloomfield Road.

Elsewhere, Leon Ayinde scored his second goal in two games, and his first in the National League, as his loan side Rochdale beat Yeovil 4-0 at Spotland, the 20-year-old Irish forward having bagged the first senior goal of his career in the National League Cup win against Stoke’s U21s on Tuesday.

Another of Town’s U21s, striker Ash Boatswain, 19, scored his first goal for his loan side AFC Fylde - and his first in senior football - as they defeated Wealdstone 2-0 at home, also in the National League.

Well this is spooky, I was literally just thinking about him only yesterday and wondering how he’s getting on. He’s such a talent, and I really hope Town don’t decide to offload him, but give him a chance a5 senior football with us at some point. I feel sure he could offer us something.

I agree Arnie, I am still absolutely convinced that given the chance, he will be a top player. He has a great attitude and seems very grounded and determined, and is obviously very athletic. Possible future captain even. Give him a contract. Get him playing regularly in championship next season, whether that's with us or out on loan.

plenty more games before he’s the next best thing

Good to see him playing again needs a long season in league one still a long way off being championship standard.

This is why we are doomed as a club. A player that will be 23 next season and played less than 50 league games most of which at bottom end of league 2 and our fan base are saying they want him in the first team. Keep his head down and Stays injury free and hopefully he can have career in league 1

Another one that might be useful next season if we are back in the Championship, but if we survive it's probably goodbye.

Personally could never understand why Baggott wasn't given a chance to establish himself in the first team. He came on against Fulham in the Cup last season and marshalled the defence very well and also scored a late goal in a game we were totally outclassed. Maybe it was too much to expect him to be up to Premier League quality but he could have had a few more games in the Championship. As a club our progression of young players has been poor for many seasons now. It needs to end. We have allowed that lot up the A140 to have carte blanche to cherry pick. If we are to compete in the top league we need to produce players that we can use and also sell.

@ OldFart71...he probably won't get a chance because he didn't cost us £20m...bit like the Broadhead situation.

Blimey. For a positive news item there are a lot of negative posts.

Very pleased for him, I like to see nice people succeed, and he’s a decent lad. Bags of potential, a player for the future.

Lightening boy. Showing ur ignorance of the situation. Broadhead isn't starting many games bcse he's still on the comeback from a bad injury, so having to be managed carefully.

OldFart71. You need to keep up. Ur right that Norwich , for some years had carte blanche on young players in our region. That is not the case now. In fact, not onky habe the club kicked Norwich out of suffolk, but are encroaching into Norfolk now. As well as other counties in the area.

@OldFart71 Which of our under performing CBs would you have axed from the championship side last season to give him his chance then?

Wonder if Mckenna could call his pal Rashford to come on loan, Man Utd don't want him, only 6 days to go, stranger things have happened, and his England pal Phillips is here.
You never know, if Utd paid his wages, just food for thought!

He has potential but is running out of time. And it's silly to say we should have played Baggott last season - we were promoted for goodness sake! Obviously player selection was correct, and Burgess and Woolfy were both excellent last season...but some of you lot would have replaced one of them with a guy that had only had a handful of matches in L2 and L1. WTF!

@Leejames99 We are limited to two loans from other EPL clubs, and we have used the two slots.

Well if Man Utd were willing to pay his £300,000 a week salary and loan him out to a Premier League competitor, in this case us, I'm with you Leejames99, and I'm sure KM would get him back to his best. However, I think Southampton winning the Premier League is more likely, but we can live in hope!

I forgot about the 2 loan rule my bad!
I think there will be a domino effect of striker transfers this week, well if we have to buy then I guess that will be from Championship, one who might be considered is Callum Robinson from Cardiff City, bang in form scored 6 in 6 is a ROI international so has plenty friends at Ipswich to settle in straight away and so if he could bring his form with him maybe a good one to get in and only valued at 4 million, thoughts?

I think he has potential. I hope he goes on to have a successful career. It would be nice if that was with us, but if not elsewhere.
