Town Agree Fee For West Brom Keeper
Monday, 3rd Feb 2025 11:32

Town are closing in on the signing of West Brom keeper Alex Palmer.

A £2 million fee has been agreed between the clubs with Palmer travelling to Suffolk to undergo a medical this afternoon.

The Blues’ goalkeeper situation has been unsettled all season with summer signing Aro Muric putting in inconsistent displays and making way for Christian Walton before Christmas, the former Brighton man then suffering a groin injury at Liverpool just over a week ago.

Kosovo international Muric, who cost the Blues £10 million from Burnley, returned on Saturday but made crucial errors as Town were beaten 2-1 by bottom side Southampton.

Kidderminster-born Palmer, 28, came through the Baggies youth system and has spent time on loan at his hometown club, Oldham, Notts County, Plymouth, Lincoln and Luton.

For Albion, the 6ft 3in tall glovesman has made 104 starts, although none of those in the Premier League, while he won caps with the England U16s as a youngster.

Palmer, who had 18 months on his contract at the Hawthorns, hasn’t played for the Baggies in the FA Cup this season, so assuming all goes well with the medical could make his debut at Coventry on Saturday.

Colonel. So ur taking the word of 1 disgruntled west brom fan. Strange how whenever we sign a player, some1 on here knows a fan of their club , who criticises them.

Still don't get what all the people are on who are saying great replacement for Muric. He is being brought in as our second choice keeper.

Davolpb. And why would youvyhink that? Why would he leave west brom, where he's 1st choice, un a team challenging for the playoffs to come her to be 2nd choice in a team who potentially will be relegated.

Blueboy1981. How is this a strange decision? Signing a player with many championship games behind him, against Slicker, who's barely played any 1st team football whatsoever, bar a few cup games.

- my comment was qualified with ‘for what it’s worth’
- he sees him play every week so it’s not difficult nor unreasonable to have these observations
- he is not disgruntled with the potential transfer & neither am I

If anyone gets to read this far, a summing up of Alex Palmer from the Whoscored.com statistics website. They have a useful overview of players characteristics, in particular Strengths & Weakeness, with other stats if you want to dig a bit deeper, I have no connection at all with the site.

Alex Palmer

Strengths: Concentration, (strong): Shot Stopping (reflexes), strong.
Weaknesses: Player has no significant weaknesses.
Style of Play: Likes to punch the ball ( I'm assuming as opposed to catching).

Just for a comparison: Muric is rated overall at 6.68: Walton (from a small sample size) 6.16: Palmer 6.77

Also just for comparison, the Forest keeper Matz Sels, with the most clean sheets in the Premier league this season has an overall rating of 6.87

Just an overview, I'm not saying anyone of those is better or worse than the other, though I'm sure we all have our opinions.

Incidently, if anyone wants to search the site I mentioned above, for players you will need to spell their name correctly, or else it will not find them, as I've found out!
