McKenna: Morsy and Davis Injuries Minor, Enciso to Be Assessed
Saturday, 15th Feb 2025 17:55

Town boss Kieran McKenna has confirmed that skipper Sam Morsy and Leif Davis missed today’s 1-1 draw at Aston Villa with minor injuries, while Julio Enciso will be assessed having come off in the first half due to a knock.

McKenna says Morsy picked up his injury a few days ago, while Davis dropped out on Friday.

“Samy we lost early in the week, hopefully not too major, but we knew we weren’t going to have him for today,” he said.

“Leif was a really late one yesterday, again pretty minor but not available for today, so Conor [Townsend] had to come in at very late notice.

“Julio, it’s down the side of his knee, so we’ll have to wait for the assessment on that.

“Sam’s is a little inflammation around his abdominal region and Leif, I won’t go into too much medical stuff, but a minor injury.”

I thought Enciso was excellent - dropping his shoulder and gliding past players. Morsy is, sadly, out of his depth at this level.

... and Townsend - a very, very good defender.

Tbh don't think we missed Morsy and Davis much today. Especially when we have to defend Townsend is much better as seen from the cup games, v Liverpool and today

we do seem to be better at this level without Morsy.

Spirited performance. Love Leif but we so much more solid with Townsend. Keeper was unbelievable today.

Methinks Philips has found his groove!

I’ll be honest with you, we didn’t miss either of them. Townsend and Phillips deserve to keep the shirt for now.

phillips and cajuste provided the protection that has been missing all season. morsy has been off the pace chasing shadows in most matches and it reflects badly he has been given so many minutes on the pitch

Didn't miss them, will need Davis on bench in case god forbid Townsend takes a knock but Morsy can go his hols now really unless Bluey needs a sub...thanks for the past Morsy been great but we need to move on.

Any comments that say we are better with certain players is rubbish.
SQUAD…Captain Morsy or not, everyone should respect all that got us here.
And those that got us here will propel us further whether selected or not.
We will stay up.

C'mon everybody have some respect. Some of the comments on here are awful and I will not sink low enough to name who. I was there - and yes the players on the pitch did well today and we can draw our own conclusions. But to stick the knife in with some of these comments is frankly beyond the pale.

Some comments above are a little harsh, but we've leaked goals through LB and GK errors all season and having Townsend as cover is reassuring, and a new keeper was a necessity irrespective of CWs injury.
Personally ive been waiting for us to see the Phillips Cajuste partnership flourish. I hold Sam in the highest regard but he struggles at times at this level, let's say no more than that.
let's hope julio is a quick healer we need him back against spurs

Hopefully it’s nothing that will keep Enciso out for long, he’s looked really lively for us so far. He had quite a big injury last season, so hopefully it isn’t any type of reoccurrence of that.

We didn’t miss either of Leif or Morsy. Going forwards I think KP and Jens should be the midfield starters. But Sammy still has a role to play as a leader and providing depth and coming on towards the end of matches.

Horse for courses innit? Townsend vs Leif is, and should always be, a tactical choice depending on the opposition and situation. We’re less vulnerable in our left-sided defence with Townsend yes, but not because he’s better - it’s because of what Leif gives us going forward. He can’t be in two places at once. Similarly, the barbs I often heard Harry Clarke getting from the stands was typically down to him having to cover two players when we’re driving a tempo down the left and the defence has shifted across accordingly.

Seriously again, the anti-Morsy idiots are at it. They don’t watch the games. There is a reason why he starts every match. His influence is huge. His passing stats are off the scale. He doesn’t dive in on the edge of his own box and give away silly free kicks (well not as often as Phillips). He is more of a leader than Phillips. The reality is that Phillips and Morsy are about the same standard. That’s why Man City let Phillips go. He is good and he is doing OK for us. We have two decent defensive mids. One good attacking mid (Cajuste). Taylor still has a little to prove at this level. Morsy clearly could have played at PL level before. McKenna wouldn’t have kept him and wouldn’t play him if that wasn’t the case. Next match, watch what he does and don’t just pre-judge based on age and previous PL pedigree.

I think Leif will need to work hard to get back his place, because Townsend has been fantastic in the few games he has played. And Leif has been so complimentary as to how hard he pushes him in training so you just know that he wouldn't throw his toys out of the pram if benched for a few games.

I do think Morsy being absent did add more dynamism and pace in midfield. I think if we take that performance from yesterday into the next couple games, we could definitely get 6 points (I highly doubt we will!).

Luckily the bottom of Premier League has been poor this season and therefore we are unlikely to need as many points as usual to stay up. Beat Spurs again and we are well and truly back in it.
