Scotland Boss Clarke Watches Hirst Tuesday, 4th Mar 2025 16:06 Scotland boss Steve Clarke was at Town’s FA Cup tie at Nottingham Forest last night to run the rule over Blues striker George Hirst.
TWTD revealed in October 2023 that the 26-year-old qualified for Scotland through a grandfather, having previously played for England’s U17s, U18s, U19s and U20s, while his father David won three full caps with the Three Lions.
Despite reports that the Barnsley-born frontman was ready to switch allegiance to Scotland last summer, Hirst said in November that there had been no talks on the matter.
“I'll have to wait and see whether there's a call coming or not!” he said when asked if he’d be interested if he were to be summoned.
“I don't know, I can't answer that question right now, that's a conversation for the future, whether that's tomorrow or in five years.
“Nothing's changed in my head, nothing been spoken about. There's been no conversations or anything like that. Just coming in here, Ipswich is my main and only focus right now.
“It's completely out of my hands,” he added. “For me, like I say, it's just about focusing on what I can do for Ipswich, and ultimately that's going to take me where it needs to take me.”
However, it appears the situation has moved on with Clarke at the City Ground to take a look at Hirst, who scored his third goal of the season in only his third start of the campaign.
Scotland face a UEFA Nations League play-off with Greece later this month as they seek to keep their place in League A. The Scots travel to Athens on March 20th with the return at Hampden Park on March 23rd.

It would be nice for him to gain international recognition but i would be worried about him getting injured because of the last year he has had needs a run of games in the first team.

Bring it on, those of us north of the border need a Town player to cheer on in the national team.

That'll do very nicely.

Well all I can say is, if it's a straight choice between GH and the usual incumbent Lyndon Dykes who has 1 goal and 1 assist in 25 appearances for Birmingham so far this season, it's a no contest! I've seen the guy play a few times, I can add nothing more!

My son asked Hirst post Spurs game when he was going to play for Scotland, and he replied "When I get asked.", so hopefully this will happen! Will be much more fun going to Hampden if we have a Town player in the team.

It would be nice to stabilise his injury situation before international football is considered, but apart from that he fully deserves the recognition, i think we play arguably better with him in the side

you cared enough to comment, ridiculous thing to say on twtds! Would deserve his chance but like others would worry about injuries!

Another example of the absurdity of the grandparent rule. Hope he doesn't waste his time (& increase then possibility of getting injured) playing for the Jocks, with whom he must feel a very limited connection.

I remember not too far ago when one could only play for the country of birth. It is ridiculous now when nations are tracking back to grandparents era to try to get players to play for them. Whose next - great grandparents? I moved from Scotland down to London in 1969 but not long before my wife was about to give birth to my second child, I ensured that she returned to her parents in Scotland so that the birth could be registered in Scotland just in case my expectant son became a successful footballer. The birth was successful, his football prowess alas was non existent!

There's very little proof to say we play better with him in the team he's hardly played in the premier league and talk is cheap as they say. I don't think Delap gets the credit he deserves playing up front with very little help in the best league in the world. Physically i think Hirst is more suited to the championship until im proved otherwise.

I think George did really we for us in our promotion seasons, when he wasn't injured, but that Scotland would consider him for international selection reflects the dearth of talent they have available.
