Derby Linked With Skipper Morsy Sunday, 13th Jul 2025 10:11 Derby County are reportedly eyeing Blues skipper Sam Morsy.
According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon on his Patreon page, the Rams are keen on the 33-year-old, as are clubs overseas with a move from Portman Road possible should the right offer be received.
Morsy has been a key man in Kieran McKenna’s team since the Blues boss took charge in December 2021 having been signed by Paul Cook, who previously managed him at Chesterfield and Wigan, late in the preceding summer transfer window from Middlesbrough.
However, the Egypt international found himself on the bench on occasion during the latter stages of 2024/25 and may well find himself out of the XI in the season ahead with Town set to confirm the signing of Azor Matusiwa from Rennes, who plays a similar role.
Asked in May whether he expects to remain with the Blues during the season ahead, Morsy said: “As it stands, I’ve still got another year left on my contract.”
Wolverhampton-born Morsy, who posted a personal highlights reel from last season on social media on Friday, has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in previous transfer windows, although at the time dismissed those claims.

Can't see him in our first XI this season, clearly have a number of midfielders in scope to replace him, but equally with another year on his contract, a lucrative move abroad would make more sense with a bigger pay day.

Would be a massive loss on and off the field if he departed. Finished the season well apart from one bad mistake against West Ham. The support for him on here is overwhelming apart from one numpty.

The problem with Morsy in the prem was he was too slow, not just in covering the ground but also slow in releasing the ball. We were always going to need goals on the break as we were likely have far less possession in the opponents final third than in the championship. The number of times per game he slowed the play down was frustrating. He got caught in possession too often also in our defensive third. I would be happy to see him stay, but his replacement is probably being eyed up right now given his age. He’ll be 35 if we got promoted and were back in the prem for the 26/27 season. If a big enough offer came in I wouldn’t throw my toys out of the pram if we took it.

KEEP, He's been central to the way we play, we may need to change this as teams will park the bus more than last time in the championship but his experience will be hard to replace. Is he looking for a new contract?

This is just paper talk (and from The Sun no less), nothing will come of this as even Morsy has said before that he's very happy hear and wants to see out his career with us

Sam would go down as a club legend if we managed another promotion with him at the helm.

Darkhorse28. There you go , making stuff up. Whare does it suggest hed be open to a move? Very tenuous interpretation of what he said regarding his contract. Especially as he said last year thst hes love to finish his career here

Why do fans here see a team who were close to relegation last season as being rivals?

We're weak enough in this area as it is...probably wise to let his contract run out after this season (unlike the case with Burgess which was a big mistake and was 4 years younger than Sam).

ITFC- a Club somewhat in ‘limbo’ now since Relegation !! I will say again, as predicted more than once previously - Don’t be surprised at ANYTHING !! The Boat continues to Rock !!

was out of his depth in the prem and the rebuild starts now. the defence needs better protection than he eas able to offer last season and he was as far off the required standard as anyone. an incredibly popular player with the majority of fans it might be good for all parties if he left before performances start to drop any further. all fans do this at all clubs but we need to be pragmatic and accept that there is a reason why Wigan etc were happy to let him go. In div one he dominated but in the championship there were plenty of rivals playing to a higher standard.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha…Derby! Are they sure.. I certainly wouldn’t rule out a move away for Sam but not a chance can I see him being sold to Derby. Firstly I don’t see Sam being happy at a lower half Championship side. I’d also be surprised to see us let him go without a ready made replacement being able to step straight into the side. This is a huge season as we continue to rebuild and Big Sam will be an integral part of the club.

Really struggled last year in prem, was overrun most of the time and commited lots of fouls as too slow. Was exceptional for us on league1 and championship but even looking at his highlights package you can see he is very slow, most of the shots are good but do not go in. Compare that to the players we looks like signing and the ones we are linked with they are ahead in all the stats. A great player for us and worthy of the fans respect but need to move on now.

If he goes should we be questioning is there a problem within, backroom staff senior players leaving, Problem is his one year left, He will get two off them, But we can't really afford to extend his and his agent will know this,

The midfield is in need of an overhaul and maybe this is the time to move Sam on but we may need his experience and know how to help us achieve that. As we’re all looking for a return to the promised land maybe this is the time to put sentiment aside and accept it? Let’s face it, if we were to make it back, Sam would not be in our plans despite his almost legendary status within the club.

Think this may well be his last season at town. If someone offers him a two year deal with the option of a third year elsewhere he might take it. Prefer if he went abroad though to see out his career rather than another championship club.

I hope this doesn't happen (Not just because he's my favourite player). I think we all saw that Samy was out of his depth in the Prem last season, but I think he could do a great job in the Championship this season and IF we were to get promoted then that would be a perfect time for him to bow out as one of our best ever skippers. Shouldn't underestimate either what he brings to the dressing room and the training ground.

Surely he will stay another year he’s got another good season left in him with us. Stay with us Sam & help us go up again.

Sentiment aside I think we need to rebuild our midfield, it was poor last season, lack of creativity and pace. Morsy has been a loyal servant to the club and been a great signing but I feel the time is right to move him on and strengthen. He was caught out for pace last season and Championship is very fast and unforgiving. We need stronger players who bring pace and creativity.

Morsy alongside another tough defensive midfielder in Matisuwa sounds ideal. Would let the 4 attacking players in front of them do their thing and also let the full backs/wing backs get forward.
