McKenna: Our Reaction Was Nowhere Near Good Enough
Tuesday, 21st Oct 2025 23:14

Boss Kieran McKenna admitted the Blues’ 3-0 home defeat to Charlton Athletic was a “terrible result” and that his team’s reaction to going behind was “nowhere near good enough”.

Having been the better side in the first half, in which Chuba Akpom hit the bar, the Blues went behind on the counter-attack to Sonny Carey’s goal on 52, then fell apart at the back and conceded again on 55 and 64 as Macaulay Gillesphey and Miles Leaburn completed the Addicks’ victory.

“It’s, of course, a terrible result for us. Makes it a really poor four days,” McKenna said, Town having lost 2-1 at Middlesbrough on Friday.

“There were obviously two different bits to the game, there’s the spell after the [first] goal, really the rest of the game after their goal where our reaction was nowhere near good enough.

“We didn’t find anywhere near the strength we needed individually or as a team to deal with the negative momentum. Didn’t do the fundamentals well enough, didn’t defend set plays, didn’t defend our box, didn’t track runs well enough. Didn’t defend our goal anywhere near well enough and that reaction was nowhere near good enough.

“There’s the other bit of the game, in the first half I thought there were a lot of aspects that were really, really good. We should score, we should be ahead against a difficult team who play man-to-man. We controlled 95 per cent of the half really well.

“And over the course of the night we had 30 shots, we should score on a normal night three of four goals tonight, quite possibly.

“We know it’s also not good enough to not be more clinical, have a little bit of luck in some situations, but we weren’t clinical enough with our execution and the bigger bit of the game, from the 1-0, it was unacceptable from us.”

As against Boro, the Blues were wide open at the back on a number of occasions, most notably for the opening goal and McKenna admitted that was a concern.

“Of course it is. I think there were some similar things there tonight that were evident at Middlesbrough,” he continued.

“We looked open on our attacking set plays, we were getting counter-attacked on our attacking set plays and then, when the momentum went against us, we looked really soft defensively.

“And the same for a 15-minute spell against Middlesbrough when the game got difficult against us.

“I don’t think it’s been the case all season, to be honest. I don’t think that’s been the problem.

“We’ve been one of the best teams defensively, we’ve given up very few chances. We’ve conceded chances from some poor moments which have been completely out of the context of the game, and there was one of those in the first half today, if I’m honest.

“But the looking open on counter-attacks, giving away big chances in a spell, I can’t think of instances of that before the Middlesbrough game, but it’s happened twice in quick succession, it’s happened with different players on the pitch.

“I’ve just spoken honestly about that downstairs, we did after Friday night as well, but it’s a quick turnaround so you don’t dwell too much, but we certainly need to address it.

“It’s a difficult league, there’s going to be difficult moments, games can change on an instant and you need to be strong in those moments, especially in our situation with our expectation this year.

“And at the moment, certainly on the last two occasions that we’ve been in [those moments], we haven’t been anywhere near strong enough and we need to do better.”

Given that, is he considering a change of approach and setting up with a more solid base and the squad finds its feet as an attacking force following the extensive personnel changes over the summer?

“I don’t think it’s that,” the Northern Irishman reflected. “I know because Friday night was a high profile game the story can be that we’re wide open.

“But our bigger challenge this year has been creating chances, it’s not been giving up chances, it’s been playing against teams who are frustrating us defensively and trying to click as an attacking unit and create chances. Defensively we’ve given up very few chances.

“Of course, in the last two games, for sure, there have been spells in the game where we’ve looked really open. Not the whole game, again at Middlesbrough it wasn’t the case for 30 minutes but once it happened and once we gave up one, we looked really open.

“I don’t think it’s necessarily a change for the whole game, we give Charlton the ball and we sit back and defend, I don’t think that’s the answer.

“Of course, we need to make sure our balance is right when we’re attacking and in a couple of periods on Friday night and in one or two moments today, when we were behind we ended up chasing the game a little bit and we ended up with maybe not the right security behind the ball.

“We need to address that, it’s a pretty new issue for us this season, but the bigger one for me is that we need to be more clinical, we should be getting the first goal in the game again.

“But when we don’t, if something goes against us, we need to be far stronger and find a way to stay in the game and give ourselves a chance to come back, give ourselves the chance to win the game late.

“More than how we start the game, I think it’s how we address it. As a team in those situations we need to find a better way of doing so, we need to give the players some things to help them with that and those on the pitch need to find more strength in that situation as well.”

At the end there were boos from some fans, which McKenna said he understood: “Of course. No complaints at all on that. They give us good support and I think they know that in the first half there were a lot of good things and we got a good reception at half-time, and I think everyone’s feeling positive in that moment.

“But the second half, where we let it get to was unacceptable and they’ve got a right to be really annoyed, as we are.”

I'm not sure, but I think I hear the sound of chuckling from the direction of Coventry, no idea who it might be.

I was stunned when Chappers wanted to go as he is a real team man but perhaps now we a seeing that we are no longer a team and are leaderless and disjointed on and off the pitch. Also i wonder if Kmac is getting carried away with his own hubris and has lost the players a bit.

I don't understand how fans can still back McKenna. He has no plans B and does not know his best 11.mckenna will not get it right Saturday will be another loss as the baggies are a better side than charlton.dont think for one second that McKenna and Ashton's jobs are safe? American's do not do defeats. Just a matter of time now

McKenna you have been sussed. Play us with an organised defence and our tippy tappy attacks won't break it down. Then strike us on the counter and our poor defence will concede.

I couldn't quite believe what I witnessed at that match. It was so unlike us. I hope this is a blip and not a major problem, otherwise it's going to be a long tough season in midtable. 30 shots 16 corners and we can't score. Need to train for long balls over the top and don't let them bounce before you try and head them away. I still have faith but patience won't last forever. Sort it out Kieron.

The inconvenient truth is that Charlton learned more from our defeat at Middlesbrough than we did. Azor has been protecting our defence all season and without him the defensive 'unit' had more wholes than a Swiss cheese. It doesn't help when our strikers keep firing blanks, but we need to find a way to get both of our best attacking players on the pitch at the same time I.e. Philogene and Clarke. This is the biggest test of KM's management - he needs to start with his best eleven on Saturday.

There is obviously unrest in the camp.Far too many changes .Kmc keep a settled team bar injuries or suspension.Dont try and keep everyone happy because it’s not working. For me there needs to be a system change.Midfield being overrun so poor support for strikers.Unless this mess is not sorted we can forget thoughts of promotion anytime soon.Listen to the supporters we are still on your side but this won’t last untill a vast improvement.

Definitely worrying times.

Personally, I think it's a ridiculous knee-jerk reaction (from people with extraordinarily short memories/no perspective!) to demand KM's sacking.

On the other hand, I have to admit he's clearly lost his edge over the past 12 months.

I'm guessing it's hard to be passionate/hungry on a £6M contract...

I do think we'll stabilise, but I'm expecting mid-table mediocrity for this year (which, for me, is still a result after decades of utter despair).

I have a lot less hope/trust in KM than usual, but it's too early to take the nuclear option.

That's my 2 cents...

Anyone who bothered to watch the game will know we dominated the first half and played Charlton of the park, however we didn’t score. Goals change games. Even away this point in the game when we was playing well the atmosphere was pretty poor. Blue action are a credit to the club and do their bit, the Bobby Robson lower is poor imo, the layout of the ground doesn’t help with the separation of blue action and the Bobby lower, away fans near a family section has always been poor, stick the away mob where blue action are and that would generate better atmosphere, it’s embarrassing being out sung at home, that’s when we were playing well.

2nd half a mistake by Oshea and we crumbled, credit to Charlton who put their shots away, something we can’t do. Those calling for McKenna give your head a wobble, it’s like he had those 30 shots we had last night? Good enough team to win the game but we bottled it. 3-0 down and we have a player sauntering over to take a corner , he should be sprinting. Jack Taylor wanted it when he came on, clarke, Akpom can hold their heads high.

Isn't it time the journalists in these press conferences asked some hard questions? They may not want to upset the manager for the sake of the relationship they may think they have with him but he needs to be put on the spot.
And where's Ashton? Things not going well - nowhere to be seen.

Jack Taylor always wants it when he’s on. If everyone had his attitude we would have no problems

And do you actually understand why the reaction wasn't good enough Kieran?...do you really?

Imho it's because you've got shot of all those players who "would" have reacted correctly..you have dismantled the best team / squad this club has had for 20+ years and spaffed £150m up the wall in doing so.

Sorry but this is on you pal and you need to sort it out asap.

McKenna still has some credit in the bank but he’s burning through it at a rate of knots!

For the first time here he’s under real pressure and if he doesn’t sort it soon my guess is he’s gone by Xmas. The Americans have invested a lot of money and they are not going to be happy with this.

It is not weak to admit that your having some problems and need a bit of support. Think it would help if we got an old head in to help work with our defence... Maybe an ex town defender with management experience who possibly doesn't want the pressure of the top job these days...

Well they put up with plenty of defeats last season?

So the muppet says when asked about changing formation to make us stronger “ “I don’t think it’s that,”…. I think he is right it’s not that it’s him he needs to go the man is clueless and someone needs to ask who chose and signed off on the players bought in as we have wasted so much money! No wonder Norwich were happy with the money for Nunez he isn’t worth a million and McAteer not worth half that are we just a charity helping other clubs survive by paying ott for there dross and this weekend we will play Albions ex reserve side against their 1st team.

Two defeats and everyone panics …..

Dug added 13:06 - Oct 22
It is not a case of panic…its a case of frustration! We had a couple of great results then McKenna made unnecessary changes again.
He should have a good look at himself instead of blaming others, why on earth was philogene benched? If McKenna ran Man City would he drop haaland?
I think we all expected one or two changes last night BUT not seven..Fans were very unhappy last night and if McKenna keeps making error’s himself then he should expect criticism.

runaround added 13:44 - Oct 22
I think if he hasn’t turned it around in a month then he might be gone as failing to battle for promotion with the players we have available would be a massive problem and I think the owners would make a change before it’s too late for new manager to turn it around this season
