McKenna: Hirst Out For a Few Weeks, Szmodics Not Yet Back in Training
Tuesday, 23rd Dec 2025 15:18

Town striker George Hirst is set for a few weeks on the sidelines due to the groin injury he suffered in the 3-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, while Sammie Szmodics is still absent from training having been ill over the weekend.

Hirst limped off in the ninth minute of the win against the Owls, the club where he started his career and where his father David is a legend.

Asked how long the Scotland World Cup hopeful might be out for, manager Kieran McKenna said: “Not exactly, but it's going to be a few weeks.

“We’ve had the scan and no exact timescales. Thankfully, it’s not a huge muscular injury, but not a very minor one either.”

But McKenna says it’s not a significant enough injury to mean he will be changing his priorities when the January transfer window opens.

“Not really, no,” he said. “Hopefully, it’s going to be a few weeks, you wouldn’t make any sort of decision around an injury of that sort of timescale. So no, I don’t see it having a big impact on anything we might do next month.”

Regarding forward Szmodics, McKenna says the Ireland international is not back with the squad: “He’s not training with the group yet.”

Better news is that Wes Burns was fine after playing 76 minutes for the U21s last night as the Welshman continues his comeback after suffering an ACL injury at Liverpool in January.

“He came through OK,” the Blues boss continued. “I spoke to him briefly this morning and he’s in good spirits to get the minutes, and that’s a good step for him.”

McKenna said previously that all being well, the 31-year-old may play some part over the Christmas/New Year period.

Reflecting on the health of his squad going into four games in 10 days, starting at Millwall on Boxing Day, McKenna says the situation is far better than was the case two years ago.

“Certainly, by the end of the Christmas period, I remember it being all hands on deck at the QPR and Stoke games,” he recalled, both games having ended 0-0 with the Blues very short on options due to injury and illness.

“Let’s see where we are by the end of the week or the end of next week, because we go into it in a pretty good position as we are now.

“But there’s an awful lot of football to be played in a short space of time. It’s good to be going into it with good numbers. As we saw with George the other day, things can change really, really quickly.

“We just need to do everything we can to keep the bodies fit and available and ready. People are going to get chances to step up over the course of the four games.”

Massive opportunity for Akpom to step up and show us all what he can do as a nine

If Wes Burns can regain full match fitness, I really think it's worth playing him on the right and trying Egeli in the middle as a striker. Some people may howl at this but got to be worth a try. Unless of course we can secure a quality striker in early January.

Westy I don't disagree

Worst possible time for Hirst ( personally) to get injured. He could find his place in the team under threat.

Rather Wes than McAteer.

Hate to say it, but can see Sammie moving on in January. His injury record since joining us has been very poor.

As for Hirst, wish him a speedy recovery. He’s also had injury issues in the past, but had been pretty steady fitness wise this season. Very little in way of back up sadly, so must get a striker in January. Egeli May be a good shout for Millwall.

We don’t have anyone good enough in the squad to score inside the box. MA & KM should spend in January to get a replacement for Hirst asap! Too many loan players not achieving at the club. Move on Smods despite being lively at times.

Westy, agreed. Probably controversially I wonder if McAteer has ever played centrally? He’s pretty big, reasonably strong and certainly has pace. I think there is a footballer in there, we just need to find him.

I think we’re wasting our time on Akpom. Hasn’t worked out in my opinion.

Shame we didn't go in for Bamford,he's doing well at Sheff Utd and would have been an ideal poacher type striker for us.(Just what we're lacking at the moment)

I think Wes' recovery will allow Egeli to come inside, but don't write McAteer off, we were saying the same things about Philogene and Clarke until 3 months ago

Everyone keeps blaming Akpom and Sammie for not playing well. It’s down to Mckennas system, they simply don’t fit it, never have. It’s not their style of play. We need people who know how to play in this set up not square pegs in round holes.

How about making an offer to bring back Cameron Burgess as centre forward, seems pretty deadly in the box this year. He certainly knows where the goal is, unlike our current centre forwards.

Murphys Law, careful what you're posting, you'll have the Kasey McAteer hate squad after your blood! The guy only appears for a few minutes in a lot of matches and gets far more dogs abuse than the rest of them put together who have sometimes been collectively poor. I might be in agreement with one or two others outside of this site, who think he might well really be a RWB, who's been playing out of position all his career. We'd need to see that to judge of course. In the meantime I'd just love him to do something special to shut the scapegoaters up!

Deny32 If Philogene gets injured then that is the easiest person to replace. Jack Clarke to start obviously.

Bodies will leave the building possibly the aforementioned Burns, Humphreys and Baggott. People need to remember that players are assets with a value that contribute towards financial fair play and some decisions will be made on that basis like it or not.

Denny32. How the hell are we down to bare bones? Hirst and Townsend the only 2 injured players. And Szmodics just been ill.
