McKenna: Humphreys and Baggott Loans Certainly a Discussion Point
Tuesday, 23rd Dec 2025 16:43

Blues manager Kieran McKenna says young duo Cameron Humphreys and Elkan Baggott have been unlucky not to be involved more during the first half of the season and that there will be discussions on whether to send them out on loan in January.

Midfielder Humphreys, 22, who spent a successful spell on loan at Wycombe Wanderers last season, has made only two brief sub appearances in the Championship this term, in addition to starting the Carabao Cup tie at Bromley in August.

Indonesia international central defender Baggott, 23, who has had stints out on loan at Gillingham, Cheltenham, Bristol Rovers and Blackpool over the last three seasons, is yet to make a senior appearance during this campaign.

The pair have featured regularly in the U21s and were among the scorers in last night’s 3-0 victory over Charlton, Humphreys also bagging two assists.

Asked whether there will be talks regarding sending them out on loan in January, McKenna admitted it’s something which will be looked into.

“It’s certainly a discussion point,” he said. “They’ve both been really unlucky, to be honest.

“I think our injury record, first and foremost. It’s really hard to predict that we would have had, and I’ll try to think off the top of my head what we’ve had apart from Wes [Burns] and Conor [Townsend], who were injured before the season, really, really minimal injuries over the course of the year.

“We’ve carried 22 bodies all year, which we’re pretty comfortable with. You’re usually banking on having a fair few unavailable, but generally we’ve had the large, large, large majority of that group available all the time, so the likes of Cameron, Elkan and Harry Clarke have had to be really patient and trained well.

“Certainly, those two, they’re not so young any more, but young professionals who are outstanding every day in their training, in their application and they’re still improving all the time and they’re big assets to have as part of the group.

“But also they need game time in their development as well. So we’ll try and make the right decisions in January.

“As always, the right balance between what’s the best thing for each player, especially for our young players, but also making sure that we have enough strength in depth in the group because things can change really, really quickly, as much as we’ve had absolutely minimum injuries in the first half of the season.

“We’ve seen before in previous seasons that they can often come in spades and all of a sudden you can have a large number in the space of a couple of fixtures, and then the group would be looking really different, and players who are on the outside at the moment would be having big roles to play.

“We’ve got four games in nine days, so there are no thoughts for anyone at the moment other than everyone being ready to contribute and then we'll make the judgments after that.”

I don't believe this pair will get game time under the McKenna regime. Letting them move on would be a generous thing to do, wonder if there are echoes of Woolfie's criticism of the management around these two?

McKenna's comments here are bang on for me. Both these two are worthy of game time, starts even. With Elkan, we have 3 left side centre halves. I know some don't seem to rate him, but I do, and wonder if there is even a possibility that Greaves is moved on - we could get a decent fee for him, as he is too valuable to be sitting on the bench, but Cedric has established himself now as first choice there.
With Humphreys, I feel sure he will get game time very soon. Azor will surely get his 2 match ban soon, and with the number of games coming up it is Cameron's chance to break into the team. Player of the year wasn't he at Wycombe? A cup run would be great to see some of these players get serious minutes, then make a decision towards the end of the window.

If nothing else, we need the squad places. Johnson, Harry C and thise two would create four. Sell Muric, and with the money (plus Johnsons) sign Cedric and Cajuste, free up two loan positions and the world is your Oyster getting PL players in with big obligations in the summer in a zero risk environment for both players and club

Unlucky ? Surely that rests with the team selection. Seems a bit ridiculous to call them unlucky.

I would move them both on permanently. At their age they need to be playing week in, week out.

Both are very hard done by. Thought we encouraged academy players to progress

Whatever KM may say, It's clear he doesn't rate them very highly. If he did, they'd be having some reasonably regular 1st team game time. Both are still easily young enough to have their time in the sun, if they have the desire for it. I hope they both make it somewhere, even if it's not here.

muccletonjoe - by unlucky he meant that the squad had been abnormally fit. This is lucky for everyone except these kind of players who are not gonna get development unless they at least appear as subs sometimes when players ahead of them in the pecking order get injuries.

Personally I think the pair of them are ready to be given a game in the first ream and see what they can do, I'm sure Humphreys is better than McAteer

OliveR16 unlucky that the squad rotation didn't include them ?

Totally agree with 1960H ... CH should be given a chance to play instead of Mac. EB very unlucky with OShea and Kipre lack of 'pitch not possible', but needs to have some time at least otherwise our academy/KM strategy is absolute waste of money and time!

These 2 deserve a chance but they may have to go on loan to get game time. If this is so, then how long are they contracted for, and do we have an option to extend them. It would be awful to lose these 2 for nothing if their contacts run out.

Bit daft comparing Humphreys to McAteer as Cam can play 3 positions but none of them is Right Wing.

Sadly we have no pathway for youth . Humphries should be having game time but it’s clear McKenna doesn’t rate either player highly enough to give them opportunities. No future at our club sadly for either player. Let’s start producing young players and playing them. Arsenal and Man City blood young players in the first team and this is part of their development. This is an area we must improve at ITFC

They both need to go out on loan if their games are to improve. I rate Humphreys but at the moment lacks pace and physicality to play in the championship and Baggott has yet to play a full season at any club for one reason or another. I back the coaching staff at Portman road who work with these players day in day out.
