Lampard: We Were Off It a Little Bit
Monday, 29th Dec 2025 22:34

Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard admitted his side didn’t play to their usual level as they were beaten 2-0 by the Blues at the CBS Arena.

Second-half goals from Jack Clarke and Wes Burns saw Town to their second victory over the Sky Blues in a month, their first double of the season and their fifth win on the bounce against the Midlanders, who remain eight points ahead of second-placed Middlesbrough and 10 in front of the Blues, who are third.

“We didn’t play as well as we normally do and we came up against a good team, a strong team in this league, everybody knows that, and they played well,” the former England international said.

“Sometimes you have to credit the opposition and I think we were off it a little bit in probably energy, in bravery to play like we normally do.

“And they got a feeling in the first half of the game of having a lot of control of it. We pulled that back a bit in the second half and we had a bit more momentum about us, but not us as normal tonight and sometimes you credit the opposition.”

Coventry improved after the break having been very much second best in the opening period and Lampard was asked what he said to his team during the break.

“They had a lot of rotation, we know how they want to play and they take their time on the ball and I think we were sometimes getting coerced into trying to press because the fans wanted us to press and [we were therefore] opening up spaces between us,” he continued.

“I and we set up how we press and the lads had to know that and I thought we were better for that first 25 minutes of the second half.

“Sometimes when, if they stop the ball, we don’t move until they move the ball and that’s it.

“And I think we got dragged into that a little bit and I think [lacked] a little bit of bravery on the ball to play more ourselves like we normally do.

“We normally strike a good balance of playing and then going longer when we have to and playing behind a backline.

“And today we got dragged into just turning the ball over far too much and that gave them the sense of having a lot of possession and feeling in the game.

“So [at half-time], I wanted to shake the lads out of that, just remind themselves that at that point we’re 13 points ahead of Ipswich, who are a really strong team. We’re top of this league, play like it.

“I didn’t think the lads really had that sort of belief. It can happen, it’s not something that’s chronic that’s going to be a thing now, it’s just one of those days.

“A good team comes along and they beat it. We have to take it on the chin, stay humble, keep working and keep working with the goal in mind of what we want.”

Quizzed on whether his side should have been awarded a penalty in the second half when Darnell Furlong and Haji Wright collided, Lampard felt it was a foul, although replays indicated the clash was outside the box.

“I thought it was a foul, if it was in the box,” he said. “Somebody said to me it might not be in the box. If it was in the box, then I think it was a penalty. I felt that was quite clear. I haven’t had a chance to look at it again, that was my opinion at first.”

That's quite a lot of words from Frank, that basically said we were beaten by the better side on the night. Doesn't hurt for managers just to come out and say it now and again, it happens at all levels, and it reflects well on them when they do. I said pre match ( twice ), that I don't think Coventry are as good as the league table makes out, they have however been very consistent. I suspect they'll have enough points in the bag already to get the job done, and hopefully our paths will cross twice more next season on a higher plain!

Frank is a good guy and he has done a good job at Coventry but the league isn't won in December. They will be there abouts at the end of the season I'm sure, but we were on fire tonight, with just a couple of additions in January we will be fine I'm sure, but as I said a long way to go yet. Special mention to two unsung heros, Walton and Furlong tonight. Great to see Wes back and scoring and well done to our fans, good and loud as always!!

Big frank gets a lot of stick, but clearly he’s set his team up in way to score a lot of goals and they’re winning a lot of games. We may give him stick but he’s clearly a man who knows what he’s doing. Tonight was one of those special results. There’s a lot of football to be played but I certainly got the same feeling when Burns scored to when Burgess scored 2 seasons ago. We’ve got a long way to go but we can do it!!!

Not as whiny as I thought he'd be - but his face says a lot, lol. TBH, before we found KmK, I was hoping we would be more interested in singning Lampard - but not many here agreed with him being a worthy candidate. I'm glad we didn't, as he had a dodgy start, but he is starting to show he could become a really good manager.

I just dont like him, although love playing his team!

He speaks as though we dragged his team down, personally i thought we were just better! That said we need to be better more of the time. Lets hope this is not a false dawn, would be a good time to hit some consistency. I said a while back i would judge this summers transfer dealings in the new year.
Not sure why so many people including MIck Mills think that Coventry have the title in the bag? A case in mind, end of Feb 23 Shef wed were taking league 1 by storm, sitting in pole position 8 points ahead of town in 3rd, come seasons end we were in 2nd 2 points above wednesday, happens all the time, look at Leeds Utd the following season they were nailed on for top 2.
I think its quite often better to be in the chasing pack, Cov and Mid certainly have targets on their backs! Also throw this in the equation, Cov and Middlesborough are 4th and second in the efl championship table of Bottlers, Norwich make it in this list in 7th position! did they play last night? HA HA HA HA HA

I realise he‘s not saying a lot, but there is a bit of insight there. Obviously, we’ve known for at least three seasons that Ipswich are all about luring the other team in, inviting them to press, and entrapping them to make more space for ourselves upfield. OK, it’s not rocket science, but what Frank tells us is that, even though the opponents know full well what is happening and have been instructed to resist, they can find it hard to keep to their own game plan, especially with the crowd egging them on. Which begs the question, if we can beat the leaders so comprehensively on their turf, why is our away form so poor? Are Frank’s lads just particularly unregimented?

Massive respect for Mr Lampard and always have.
I noticed that too, for example when Walton just stood there with the ball at his feet none of the Coventry players would chase after the ball. They allowed us to dictate the pace of the game. I wonder if they had an element of fear after the reverse fixture? But it was strange to watch them like that on their own pitch.

@Europa
Love the Sasquatch picture! I watch videos about that all the time, one of my favourite subjects.

I think this was another reality check for Lampard and his players. I’ve watched them play in other games this season, and they didn’t and still don’t in my opinion, look like a squad worthy of the position that they hold at the moment. It’s a bit misleading, but then this league can be like that.

As for Lampard as a manager, well this is the second time that McKenna has outwitted him, he was a decent international player, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s going to reach the same heights as a manager. In my opinion, he has a lot to learn.

His summing up isn’t as ‘oh woe is me’ as I thought it might be, certainly not as bad as the last time we humbled him. However, he couldn’t help himself when it came to the alleged penalty incident, but I think Frank has to have something to hang onto, his grip though, is starting to weaken.

People forget Mark Robins lates the foundations at Coventry was unfairly asked to leave and Lampard walked in to do the final bit.
Like him and he’s a winner hence his lack of sportsmanship but we totally outplayed Coventry home & away.
Love Burns coming back excellent and scored!

Picked them off at home, dominated them away. His words reflect a lot of respect for us, as they should.
Coventry are a good side, but but I suspect Frank will be looking at his career beyond Coventry more than seeing it as a long term project. Ipswich is a project with almost 5 years of progress. Kieran could stay another 5 years and still be a very young manager at 43.
I think Coventry will go up this season, but it's more Luton than Sunderland in my opinion and Frank will cash in and leave as soon as he can

I remember Frankie boy up on stage supporting the Tories, sitting and smiling smugly next to Cameron.
That should tell you how misguided he is. C**t.

55015: Mark Robins is twice the manager Lampard is or ever will be. I think Voventry are an average team , benefitting from stability over the last 4 seasons, and they have a couple of decent attackers. But they are most threat from long throws, corners and free kicks.

He's having a purple patch, it won't last. Has done very little prior to this current run. I honestly believe they will capitulate, its a very, very long way from a done job.

I don’t understand people here slagging Frank off or judging him as permanently less than his predecessor. That’s a ridiculous assertion (ArnieM). He’s at beginning of his managerial career and impossible to judge how he might turn out

warktheline added 16:08 - Dec 31
He’s not at the beginning of his managerial career..Derby, Chelsea twice and Everton….poor returns on 3 of those roles he was given! Lampard built a career on the field and has used his high profile effectively in getting managerial positions! Robins was harshly sacked by an owner who wanted a high profile figure!

There’s been more than a touch of arrogance from Frank and his team…they are an average side, and will be eventually caught and end the season in the playoffs
