McKenna: Not Impossible We Could Add Before Window Closes Thursday, 22nd Jan 2026 15:24 Town boss Kieran McKenna has upgraded the status of any incoming transfers before the end of the January transfer window to ‘not impossible’.
The Blues are yet to sign a senior player this month with Chelsea youngster Frankie Runham, who has signed on loan with an obligation to buy, the only addition up to now.
Asked whether anything is likely before the Monday 2nd February deadline, McKenna said: “We’ll see. We can upgrade ‘not likely’ to ‘not impossible’ if you want a status update. We’ll see.
“The club are working hard and other than that we’ll update in due course. We hope that by the end of next week the squad will be in the best position possible, whether that means exits or some players coming in that can help us, there will be no stone left unturned on that.”

We need to be very careful what we wish for here, the rotation is working and the squad knows the patterns and each other. If we bring someone in, they need to be high impact or it could cause more harm than good. Trust the process.

I'm cautiously optimistic!!

Please can we sign a striker - we cannot rely on Hirst, Azon & Akpom in the coming months - much like we couldn’t rely on Hirst & Al-Hamadi and got Moore in. Why did Callum Wilson have to score the winner for goodness sake? LOL
Burley4ever added 15:54 - Jan 22
Why not use Egili as striker? Wasn't that his position at his previous club. I know he's young but so was Haaland.
CookAshtonJohnson added 15:57 - Jan 22
Burley4ever - I like that idea; especially with Burns coming back into the fold. But something tells me that we’ll want an out-and-out striker that we can take with us to the Premier League, fingers crossed. Delap on loan would be lovely - especially after watching him struggle last night. 12 touches in 70 minutes against Champions League minnows.

Don’t think we need a striker to be honest. Hirst and Azon are doing fine, and Szmodics can also play up there. Agree Akpom doesn’t seem up to it, but he can come on for 20 mins here and there if we get really desperate. Cover for Matusiwa would be ideal, but don’t realistically see who we could get to cover that position who would be happy to sit on the bench most of the time.

Burley, I like the idea of Egelli playing either in the 9 or 10 too. He has pace and it would be much more difficult to double team him than on the wing

Good suggestions above re Egeli, but I think McKenna is too rigid in his ways to at least " try" it...pity coz it might have offered us something different.

Londonben . Akpom has hardly played, but when hes played up front hes done well. And as the Oxford game showed, if given ,chances in the box, he' ll score goals. Had one chance come his way, and scored. Just needs a run of games and we'll see the best of him. .

CookAshtonJohnson. We only signed Moore bcse Hirst was out injured for the season.
RetroBlue added 16:31 - Jan 22
But thats point isn't it. McKenna has rarely played Akpom in his natural #9 role... the player must be so frustrated.

Just a little FYI for people saying akpom isnt up to it ..... same goals scored as azon . So stats wise for goals they are equal . And before last game azon was well bellow how id want my striker to perform. His performance last game was really good but its only 1 game ive seen him play really well in

Think Azon has improved match on match. He was excellent last game. Quite like to see Egeli in the 10,Nunez is our biggest miss.

I thought Ashton mentioned in an interview a couple of weeks back that 'we were actively looking for additions in January'...seems a bit of a step backward with what McK is saying but as always can't always guarantee what they're saying, there might be a last minute surprise or not.

Whoever (if) comes in whatever position, needs to be better than we have already, otherwise it's pretty pointless, with may be the exception being a reliable stand in for Matusiwa, when it will inevitably be needed. It may be that they have been working in training with what we have, to cover for that, doubtless we'll find out one way or another pretty soon. As I posted also yesterday, our three starting strikers in the last 16 games, Hirst, Akpom and Azon have scored just 2 goals in that time, before being subbed. An absolute miracle that we are 2nd top goalscorers! Only because of two top quality wide men, well one of them only at home. I'm increasingly having higher hopes for IA at least. Shows the complete weirdnesss and lack of real quality in the division this season. A genuine finisher and another playmaking type of central midfielder is a must. I'm upgrading " not impossible " to essential.

To say it's a miracle we're 2nd top scorers is laughable. Have a look who's top scorer for the team 7 points clear at the top of the prem

We're not desperate to sign anyone. We have an unbelievable squad for the championship. We're in a difficult situation in some respects as in order to improve we need premier league players, that's big money (yes, we have money) and despite looking like a good promotion prospect we would need players to drop down a tier in order for us to upgrade.
Saxonblue74 added 19:03 - Jan 22
Isn't it nice to read about injuries without panic setting in?! Yes, of course it's a shame to see injuries but there's a more than capable option in every area.
armchaircritic59 added 19:30 - Jan 22
Wheels, totally irrelevant, a different division. The answer in the league only is Trossard and Gyokeres, both on 5. Hardly surprising when both Havertz and Jesus have missed pretty much all the season thus far, and Gyokeres himself has missed a number. Thus very little in the way of a striking department, which merely shows how good they are at sharing goals out around the whole team, as they've had to.

Seems strange that we would make space in our squad, with Humphreys and H Clarke going out on loan and not have any imminent signings. Is KM just joshing?

I must be missing something while watching the match’s, Egeli upfront and also touted as a number 10. In the under 21’s he, at the moment, would find it hard to hold a place in that team. Because of the fee, build up to the transfer here has he kept his place in the first team squad. How many times has he completed a full match? . Still needs a to learn a lot more about defending and attacking the full back. If promotion comes he will be loaned out to a championship club to learn the trade

KiwiTractor, I think it's what's known as keeping cards firmly pressed to his chest, and just maybe a little " nod " to MA. Better this way than having any targets splashed all over websites/social media etc. As my late mother used to say " It will all come out in the wash ".

KMcK is naturally cautious and doesn't like to speculate about how the future will pan out. He rightly concentrates on the here and now. But I'm 70% hopeful we will get someone in before the deadline. If we don't, we go with what we've got, which would have its own advantages.

RetroBlue agree, Akpom looked a great signing but played out of position - the longer this went on the more it affected him. Strikers need game time but ours didn't have this opportunity unfortunately. I would hhave put Akpom in as no.9 and left him there. Hirst had more game time than anyone but he just isn't good enough..........can't even hold the ball up!

I know everyone will say I am stupid but sometimes wonderfull things can happen. ITFC make a play for Harvey Elliot on loan. He cant play for another premier league club, Liverpool and AV dont seem to want him. I sure he will just want to get mins in England. Lets give it a go.
