Town Linked With Swiss Defender
Wednesday, 27th May 2026 17:16

Town are among a long list of clubs reported to be showing interest in OH Leuven central defender Roggerio Nyakossi.

The 22-year-old Swiss U21 international skipper has impressed in his first full season in the Belgian Juliper League having joined from Olympique de Marseille, where he was playing for their B side, for €800,000 (£700,000) in January 2025.

According to German website Fussball Transfers, Town, Everton, Augsburg, TSG Hoffenheim, VfB Stuttgart, Werder Bremen, Feyenoord, RC Strasbourg and Olympique Lyon are all among the clubs eyeing the 6ft 4in tall defender.

Nyakossi, who started his career with Servette, who are based in his home town of Geneva, is said to be strong in the air and in the tackle but also good on the ball.

Marseille, who paid €2 million (£1.7 million) for Nyakossi in the summer of 2022, are reported to have included a buyback clause in last summer’s deal, while the defender has another year left on his contract.

I've had a look at one of the two usual stats sites I use for such things. Not a great deal to go on there, though I did note in 18 games he'd scored 3 times. I did note something else too. A summing up of his notable strengths and weaknesses based on 2 seasons data, said, one notable strength, ball interception. Two notable weaknesses, passing and tackling. The last one being odd for a central defender! As I say only limited amount of data, and a young guy with improvement in him almost certainly. Make of it what you will!

This the first of many … some will get excited some will be disappointed and some bored with the stories… best not pay too much attention until players are signed which from experience will be last few days of window which is z shame as new players will not necessarily get a full preseason which is very important.
On recruitment I think our need is rather different from other premiership teams . In this window window we need to recruit players ready to take on premiership immediately… players likdd red this guy may grow into that level and established teams can afford the time to do that … firstly we need players who hit the road running… once we have them we can recruit those who may take time to develop (Walli) … first priority is an experienced established spine … the key to any good team

I would like a centre back to be a nasty snarling mouthy leader of men prob 27 to 28 + someone who's head don't drop.

Cressi, I knew a few those in Italy back in the day. Modern day defenders are absolute pussy cats compared to that lot. Used to keep them in cages during the week and feed them raw meat!

Yes armchair like Facchetti and Tardeli even Baresi had a ruthless side.

I don’t know anything about him other than the article, but he has had just one season of experience, that was in the Belgium League and he has no track record in the PL or with PL clubs. Not for me I’m afraid.

I for one have been dying to hear some rumours. Prem quality is a must, And I know he's not a defender but we have to find our equivalents to Xhaka etc, to drive the squad and lift the team to this level, show them what it's all about. We thought we'd done that last time with Philiips, which was unfortunate for all parties. Vardy wants to leave Italy, one season deal? Divides opinion, but he could tear it up as a super sub. And exchange dark art tricks with Darnell Throw-long.

cressi, haha yes indeed, add to that the likes of Claudio Gentile, most inappropriately named footballer I can think of. Even looked scary and still does today!

Last time in the Prem I thought Town brought players who would be able to step up to the Prem.
I look at the team now and wonder who could.

Can Egail or Clarke could Matasu no idea so I have no idea of some of the names being mentioned so I think I will keep quiet and wait and see

Nervous for the season but expect Town to finish above Coventry and Hull as they will have to spend money on getting Prem ready as Town did the year before

Don't really believe anything until it comes from the club, we need players for next season not 2 or 3 years time.

Not sure that KM is the right mgr to rely on for pitch time and development as a youth player even though he spent much time in the MU academy. Look at our own recent examples of Cam H and Elkan B. Both talented youngsters but given no chance by KM.

If true then Greaves would have another strange season as no way Club Capt Oshea is gonna give space ,,, Any thoughts on Hmuphries and Baggott anyone??

Rightly or wrongly KMc doesn’t rate them so I expect them to be sold.

Derek Jefferson is available although i doubt many on here will remember him he was a defender who rarely kicked the ball and also Bobby Bell two articulate defenders. I think Daryl O'shea is a competent centre back but he's never had a partner who has really nailed down that left sided spot. The left side has been a problem area for quite a while now with leif Davis being primarily a attacking wing back and one of our most creative players.

Newly promoted Town are going to be 'linked with' anyone who can kick a football - by their agents.

Linkboy13, I still remember Jefferson having Frannie Lee in his top pocket when Man City were on the cusp of winning the title, we were safe from relegation and Lee couldn’t understand why we weren’t handing them the points.

Nothing will be moving until the world cup is coming to an end unless they were already done deals in the pipeline before. Worlds biggest showcase of quality players so all eyes on those. I expect lots of deals and rumours throughout it, but that may just be the thing we need to distract others from us picking up a quality player who for one reason or another isn't going.

Linkboy13, I remember DJ very well. I think his motto was " If it moves kick it "! I have a humorous true story about him. Some years back I had one of those little magazines the Jehova's Witnesses produce ( I'm not one ! ) put through the letter box. I flipped it over and on the back was an interview with DJ, ( you might know he " found " religion a bit later in life, possibly down the back of a sofa :) ). Anyway the interviewer asked him if he still played any football and if so, did he play the same way ? His brilliant reply was " Yes I do, but these days I go back to see if they're ok "! I'm not saying we could do with a carbon copy of Derek in the centre of defence now, but someone who let's opposing forwards know that he's around and taking notes wouldn't go amiss!
