Clegg: Town Need to Kick On
Clegg: Town Need to Kick On
Monday, 27th Dec 2010 15:26

Chief executive Simon Clegg says Town need to kick on during the second half of the season after bringing to an end the run of six successive league defeats which saw them drop into the Championship’s lower reaches.

Clegg said: “There is no axe hanging over the head of the manager, but it is time to kick on now as we are coming up to the halfway stage in the season. Everyone is focused and I’m still very excited about what we can achieve this campaign.

“We are building in the right direction, but there is further movement to go — and it’s time to move on. We are in a results-driven business and you live by results.

“You have to recognise how painful it was for everybody going through that losing run and we know what was delivered then is not what we want to see. We are looking for good times ahead and with a lot of confidence.”

Clegg reiterated that manager Roy Keane will be given money to spend during the January transfer window with the Blues boss already having targets in mind: “Roy will receive financial support from the owner. If there is someone he wants to bring in he will get backing.

“There may be players going out as you cannot increase the squad ad infinitum as that presents all sorts of challenges.”

Meanwhile, former Town striker Jordan Rhodes is claimed to be a potential target of Norwich City should they sell current frontman Grant Holt.

If Rhodes does move on, the Blues would receive a significant but undisclosed percentage of any profit Huddersfield would make on the £850,000 fee they paid for the 20-year-old in July 2009.

Hopefully we will push on - but to do that will need to sign a number of attacking players in January. I can see more players leaving mind. Wouldn't be surprised if we wave goodbye to both Wickham and Priskin.

What a completely pointless thing to say - we all know that Town need to kick on without the incredibly well paid Clegg stating the obvious. And it's all well and good for Keane to be given money to spend in the January transfer window on the targets he's already identified but no doubt Clegg will balls up the contract negotiations and we'll end up panic buying at the end of the transfer window. Not that I'm a pessimist!

Well we can't really kick on if we are not playing! I can't see us getting anything from the Coventry match.

This News article makes my blood boil!!

"There is no axe hanging over the head of the manager" - Well there damn well should be, Keane needs to be told in no uncertain terms, & given a time limit that if things don't improve he will be out of a job.

"I'm still very excited about what we can acheive this campaign" - Had Clegg had too much to drink when he did this interview!! What the bloody hell have we got to be excited about?!? Can anyone name ANY club that have lost 9 out of 12 games & still got promotion?!?! the bloke is a moron, the football Town have played thus far this season has been chronic.

"We are building in the right direction" - HOW EXACTLY!?!?! We are worse off now than when Keane took over, I don't see anything that would make me think we are building in the right direction, unless of course Clegg is targeting relegation!!!

"We are looking for the good times ahead with alot of confidence" - PLEASE someone come on here & tell me they are looking forward to the remainder of our season with ANY confidence, at best we are going to acheive safety/mid table mediocrity, as a club we are in dark days, I just don't see where Clegg is coming from.

"Roy will recieve financial support from the owner, if there is someone he wants to bring in he will get backing" - so please explain to me Clegg, how come Keane has LOUDLY voiced his concerns about the lack of YOUR ability to tie up players he has identified/wanted to bring in? What does this mean then more bloody loan signings?!?!?!?

& FINALLY, Jordan Rhodes is being linked with a move to Norwich city!!! Keane/Clegg & Evans' biggest mistake, we should have never let him go, we all said it at the time, no way is Priskin at £1.7m anyway near the player or the potential that Rhodes is, it is bad & foolish decisions like these that means we find ourselves in the trouble we are in.

Everytime I read or hear anything Clegg says, I just want to smack him in the face, Again I would ask someone to please explain to me the value of Clegg being at our club, because as I see it he is just a complete waste of time/space & money.

Sorry I know I've had a rant, but I don't halve feel better for it!!

Happy New Year by the way!!

Agree with you to a point Suffolk n Good where I differ is i think the axe should just fall rather than hang over Keanes head the thought of him with more money to spend....................please let the nightmare end.

I hadn't heard the phrase "kick on" in football terms until it was introduced by Keane. Clearly Clegge follows Keane in his horse racing luck/betting approach.
well. How wrong can you be. Ipswich Town have a collection of more or less talented players. They are Real Human Beings, not horses to be kicked in the guts to get them going. Kick on then you 2 boys, into the twilight. The next 3 weeks change your lives forever.

Clegg seems to be ignoring all the facts and living in a delusion. 1 win in 8 games and Clegg is "excited"?! This really is depressing, the thought that Roy Keane will be taking decisions on who to buy and sell when he himself only had a few months of his contract left. His comments recently indicate that he thinks we have been too attacking and need defensive players!

If Rhodes goes to Norwich they will have about 14 years of goals to look forward to from him. We should not have sold him for a fraction of the price that Lee Martin cost us in transfer fee and wages!!

Rhodes going to narwich is commerical. If he was that good far, far bigger clubs than scum would have picked him up by now I assure you. He is totally unproven at this higher level ....Put it this way Gary Roberts outshines him most weeks and we all know how he looked way out of his depth at this level.

Agree with everything you say there suffolk n good. We could have saved near on £4M and not bought Martin and priskin and we would still have as much, probably more if we'd have kept Rhodes in terms of goals and general entertaining football.

Are we any better than last season? Clegg's excited of what we can achieve this season what is it then Cleggy? Half a season gone and we are 18th place massive improvements are needed at best Im expecting us to finish mid table. I would love for us to make the play-offs but I can't see it we have lost so many games already and we don't win enough games either. Because of the postponements over xmas I reckon Keane could see out his contract January is a very busy month.

I would like to see Rhodes in the Championship to see how good he really is.

Most on here seem to think he is going to score goals galore in the Championship so that must mean he is far better than Wickham.

So if Wickham is worth £10 Million Rhodes must be worth £15 Million, so that must mean we will be keeping Wickham as Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool will all be after Rhodes.

So we keep Wickham and get a possible £5 million sell on fee so we can buy a Chopra.

Sounds good to me

Rhodes was always an awesome talent. Shocked that he would go to Norwich considering he has also been linked with some of the Premier League Clubs (Aston Villa) and Scottish (Kilmarnock). Him and Lansbury could prove sensational signings for Norwich as they push for promotion.
Sorry, but Wickham is still unproven at all levels. I have seen him play 4 times and was impressed with his overall strength but nothing more (he combines well with Murray but Priskin and Wickham seem on different planets). Rhodes is absolutely proven and has proved a bargain buy for Huddersfield (well done to them for getting him). Wasn't his dad goalkeeping coach at Ipswich? (did he get sacked??).
Nice to see Garvan playing so well also. If Palace do go down they will get a very good price for him. Great Passer of the Ball. Liam Trotter has also come on leaps and bounds and has real potential in the game.
I wonder who we will sign in January? (please give us a signing to cheer about Keane,- surely some of your old contacts at United could be persuaded??)
We'll probably end up with an unknown loan player from the lower leagues (Blue Square anyone?)

Chopra will only come for silly money as Jones has said he is going nowhere.

Is Chopra worth 5 or 6 million, think we can get a proven striker for half of that.

Bobble why do you support Ipswich?
