Jewell: I've Survived Difficult Spells Before
Jewell: I've Survived Difficult Spells Before
Friday, 2nd Dec 2011 14:51

Paul Jewell admits that life is tough at Portman Road at present, but says he has come through similarly difficult spells before when manager at Bradford and Wigan.

Jewell said: “No one’s never had setbacks. When I was at Bradford we went up in my first year but after seven games people wanted me out. We came here and lost 3-0 to Ipswich. But after that we turned it around.

“At Wigan, everyone thought we were going to win [what's now League One] because Dave Whelan was paying decent wages.

“I remember the day that England beat Germany 5-1 we didn’t play because we’d got a number of internationals and I’d gone to Cambridge to watch Wade Elliott play for Bournemouth.

“Because we hadn’t played, we went to the bottom of the league. That was in the October/November time. That was pretty low.”

But he says gradually things started to move in the right direction: “We finished mid-table that year and the next year, after I’d had the squad together for a year, we won the league with 100 points.

“I’m not saying we’re going to win the league with 100 points next year, but sometimes there’s a lot of stuff to get through.

“All the decisions I make, I’ve got to get them right and over a period of time I’m convinced I will. But at this moment, people are questioning me, and I fully understand that.”

Time for Bullard and Bowyer and co. to show us why Jewell has faith in them. Or else they have to be the first to go. I'm sure Hyam and the other youngsters would put up more fight even with less ability.

That said, I really do believe Jewell can turn this around. Let him.

It wasn't October/November time, it was September 1st having played 3 league games.

I was just reflecting that Jewell really has had a poor run of luck. Since the good run, we have had players with personal problems (Edwards (driving and babies), Collins (baby), Chopra (gambling), Scotland (undisclosed, as far as I know), Bullard (Hull contract)), injuries (Sonko, Stockdale, Murphy, Bowyer, Martin, Delaney, Leadbitter), and players getting the hump and wanting out of the club (Healy, Priskin). Yes, a lot of the problems are of his own making, and the squad looks awfully unbalanced, but, if the luck changes a little, things should start going better.

Please tell me I'm right...

I may be wrong (it has been known), but presumably most of these quotes from PJ come as responses to questions from the media - rather than him just deciding to spout forth for no apparent reason.

If I am right, could we have visbility of the questions?

Context is always important.

What a terrible run we are in and how easy to moan and groan and badmouth everyone , management and players alike. In watching ITFC its difficult to recall such awfulness but time does play tricks on the memory ,, the darker days of Jackie Milburn, watching Graham Harbey through half closed eyes, a 9,000 crowd on an awful Tuesday night against Stockport County, but against that we have had the fanstastic days, more in the past (sadly )but nevertheless how many "English country cousins" can boast our proud record of two England managers, being English Champions, FA Cup Winners, European Winners and so once a Bue always a Blue, whether its dear old Bobby at the helm or the not so successful PJ, the true supporter supports the Shirt, The Badge, The Club-- I was on the verge of setting light to my season ticket after Burnley, but I have clamed down -more or less-its NOW more than ever that IPSWICH TOWN FOOTBALL CLUB needs its really true supporters to get down to Portman Road and show that we care by attending and not by being absent....

What a Ridiculous interview. Who cares whats happened in the past , talk is cheap and if you are going to survive here ( and i hope you do) it will be due to results on the pitch and not endless verbal garbage and self promotion.

I hope Paul Jewell survives this spell, and a win tomorrow would be a good start. What a relief it would be if we could get three points tomorrow!

Roy Keane was a terrible manager of this football club and caused so much damage that it is not easy to put right. Remember the £9M spent on Fulop, Edwards, Leadbitter, Martin and Priskin. Remember the sale of Rhodes. Remember playing four centre backs (Eastman at right back) and one up front. Remember the "will never play again" comments. Remember the fall outs.

Paul Jewell is nothing like Keane and I do not find myself disagreeing with what he does. Results are the only problem (a big problem, I know). He signed players we wanted though: we'd dreamed of Chopra for two years, everyone wanted Bullard, Murphy was a welcome return, an England squad goalkeeper seemed great. The sale of Wickham for big money (10 times Rhodes fee) was understandable. Jewell hasn't fallen out with players like Keane, and he is a genuinely nice chap. I REALLY hope he turns it round and stays in charge.

Too right Mark. Wishing Keane back is madness and frankly dim.

Arc;

PJ bought Bullard and Chopra fully knowing of their personal issues. (probably the only reason we landed them)

Collins missus having a baby is not exactly an issue, two or three players must go through that each season in a squad. And hardly a surprise to PJ.

So we can remove the above from the 'bad luck' column.

Mullet: you're right about Chopra and Bullard. The Collins baby is only issue because mother and child are in Stoke (or thereabouts), but I suppose that kind of thing is likely to be an issue with any loan player. Let's just hope they all get their heads together in a hurry.

Good to hear that he came through difficult spells at Wigan and Bradford - of course he fails to mention that he didn't at Sheffield and Derby - where it got much worse.

Ah the joy of modern football. Prove 'em wrong Jewell. Watching them play and their attitude of the pitch, my attention is towards the players and wishing/praying/hoping for some passion and desire from them on Saturday. Should have included dream....!

jas, I'd say he's more or less got a 50:50 chance of surviving this then, wouldn't you?

How sad it is that you al still badmouth RK he was a better manager than PJ will ever be and a man most of the players wanted to play for yes its true and now some are brave enough to say that. Of course it will cost them we need a real manager and we need it now PJ has brought in the players he wants ignored our youth and his pensioners cant cut it now he spouts about youth because he thinks it will make him popular he should try politics
