Tottenham Midfielder Luongo Set for Town Loan
Tottenham Midfielder Luongo Set for Town Loan
Saturday, 21st Jul 2012 22:12

Town are expected to confirm the season-long loan signing of Tottenham midfielder Massimo Luongo early this week. TWTD was first to reveal that the Blues were targeting the 19-year-old Australian earlier this month.

Sydney-born Luongo joined Spurs in January 2011 after impressing while on trial, having previously played for APIA Leichhardt Tigers in his homeland.

He made nine appearances for their U18s in the 2010/11 season, scoring three goals from central midfield, including one in a final day 2-1 defeat of the Blues.

By the beginning of last season he had impressed enough to make his senior debut — and miss the decisive spotkick in a shoot-out — as a 71st minute sub in a Carling Cup tie with Stoke. That remains his only first team appearance.

Capped twice by Australia at U20 level and called into senior training camps, 5ft 9½in tall Luongo also qualifies to play for Italy, the nation of his father's birth, and Indonesia, where his mother was born.

Luongo is currently with the Tottenham development squad which is playing a friendly against Italian side Calcio Como tonight but yesterday tweeted to a friend: "Looks like I'm heading for a loan."

I am not sure about this. 19-years-old with only one first team appearance. Presumably if he comes here and does well there will be no chance of a permanent deal, so we could end up just developing a player for another club. Let's hope he has enough talent to make enough of a difference next season to make the deal worthwhile.

Keep them coming in Jewell. Heskey next.

Jack Colback came in as a relatively unknown talent and look how his first season with us turned out! More than happy for Jewell to keep bringing in the young, hungry and eager to impress players - providing some more experienced heads follow soon!

We're not in a position to pick up players of this calibre (by all accounts he's pretty useful) so we have to accept that by utilising the loan market to get the quality of players we need is also to serve the needs of his parent club by development then so be it. If he helps us pick up valuable points along the way then all the better.

Agree with manthetis,,, don't like developing other teams players... am sure he is quality (Klug/Redknapp link) but hope this has a perm deal attached!

You got to question some peoples opinions on here, promising youngster and there's still moaners. Genuinely hate most of our own 'fans' PJ is giving us what we wanted, a young team to build on for next few years yet now that's wrong? Funny bunch u boys are at times

This has got be one that Klug was involved in. Assuming this is the case I'd be surprised if this kid doesn't work out.

Starting to get excited for the new season and tempted by the 10/1 being offered for promotion.

What position does he play in midfield ?

Not moaning but------
This must mean that PJ thinks that our midfielders are not good enough or is he the new Messi ?

I'm good with a couple of loaners...it's the over reliance that can get you into trouble.

Spurs don't operate a reserve team, so the philosophy is to send young players out on loan to gain experience, with a view to testing their credentials for following season. They will normally try to loan to clubs who play passing football so that's a compliment! Ipswich will always be a possibility given the relative proximity to players existing homes.

We've seen good players from Spurs before e.g. Gio, Townsend and Livermore so let's hope that this is a trend.

Welcome Massimo!

Is he the "mouth watering" signing? Can't say I've ever heard of him, but somebody must know that he's a very good player if he's described as "mouth watering", I really hope their right!

I seriously have to laugh at some of the so called 'fans' who comment in here! You're moaning that if this player comes in, and is successful, we'll be developing another teams player..
If he comes here and is successful then surely that would have benefitted out club. Meaning +points +goals etc..
We shall be developing a player from a top premier league club, which is where we aspire to be. If we had a player from another championship club in on loan than I'd be complaining..

Good signing, should add some much needed depth.

And I echo Mr_Evans' comments, what is this 'argument' that we shouldn't develop players from other clubs? That is just a ridiculous negative spin on what loaning players is all about. How many people here moaned about Gio when he came over on loan?

We've got one (Hewitt) and hopefully more (Kouroma + ?) young players so there is a lot to look up to. Having a talented young player on loan is not going to change that.

not convinced. think the money used in this deal could have been spent more wisely elsewhere . but hopefully the kid will be a revelation and help us get promoted so i can eat my words .

Iam sorry, my mouth isnt watering over this. I wish the lad Well, but if he is any good, he goes back to spurs and thats that. I would much rather develop our own kids

Massive points being overlooked here....who has said that a) this is not a loan with a view to a permenant deal or b) the lad was developing under Klug at Spurs last year, now the whole management at Spurs (including youth set-up) has changed, this kid is likely to play his heart out to keep a contract/attract other clubs (possibly us). How is that negative. Will make the likes of Hyam/Carson want to kick on too.

As for a permenant deal, if the headline read we had agreed season long loan with view to permenant move and he turned out to be rubbish, everyone would have a moan then!!! At least we can see if he makes the grade by having him on loan, fairly cheap. win win for us if it works out tbh!

Would question how a 19 year old centre mid with 1 appearance to his name can be more than an occasional player at our level. We definetly need a centre mid but think it should be a Graham Kavanagh / Sean Derry charchter to be help a challenge for the play offs. What Warnock do?
Options Drury, Hyam, Stevenson have 50 games in total at this level (approx)- a call for experience then- of course there is jibber-monger Bullard but how he fits into a team that can defend I am yet to work out.

StowTractorBoy added 23:37 - Jul 21
Apparently he is a central midfield player so it is a little surprising that we have added another body to accompany Bullard Hyam Stevenson Drury etc. Don't know much about him but perhaps he is the tough tackling ball winner we need to compete with Hyam - perhaps someone could enlighten us. Still need a quick left sided midfield player another centre back another goalkeeper and most importantly a new striker. Keep them coming PJ.

Im pretty happy about this in all honesty. And to those who would rather develop our own young players, how many do we actually have who play this position (CAM) at present? Lawrence maybe? Very few if none that i want running around in the first team just yet. This lad will likely be twice the quality of any of our youngsters, which will help us this season. Im obviosuly all for playing and developing our own youth but sometimes it isnt possible to do that and push for top 6.
