Deal for Posh Pair Falls Through
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2012 23:01

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that George Boyd and Paul Taylor have turned down their proposed move to Town. The pair were at Portman Road this afternoon and underwent medicals but were unable to agree personal terms.

MacAnthony tweeted: “Just had a phone call re Boyd and Taylor Posh fans from [Peterborough director of football Barry Fry] to tell me that they have turned down the move to Ipswich after meeting to discuss terms today with Ipswich and have failed to agree terms.

“This is the reason people shouldn't discuss bids been accepted etc until things are signed, sealed and delivered. Transfer window is mad isn't it?”

He later added: "Before Posh fans wet their pants, still 48 hours till window closes and I hate the uncertainty as much as rest of you on this. Honest opinion."

A statement on the Peterborough United website subsequently released reads: "George Boyd and Paul Taylor have rejected personal terms at Ipswich Town.

"Winger George Boyd and striker Paul Taylor have rejected personal terms with Ipswich Town after meeting club officials on Wednesday.

"The pair both passed medicals at Portman Road, but terms could not be agreed.

"The transfer listed pair both played for Posh in the 3-2 defeat at Reading on Tuesday night with Taylor scoring the opening goal."

Posh accepted a Town offer believed to be in the region of £2 million on Monday with the pair, whose current deals are up next summer, transfer-listed having refused to sign new contracts at London Road.

maybe we should revise our offer to them?

Typical comments from some on here and lots of others appear to have joined in, but as usual we dont know the full details. It could be that SC or ME messed up the negotiations or it could be (and probably more likely) that Taylor and Boyd wanted more money than we have set in our wage structure. Do we really want players that only care about cash and the same people that were on here moaning that we had given Bullard a lucrative deal now want us to break the structure for these two !!! Yes its frustrating but we have to keep to our wage structure and people on here never learn and always start running their mouths off without the facts.

Very, very strange. Other websites openly reporting that the deal was done last night, medicals passed and personal terms agreed. These players won't have been looking for ridiculous money. Nothing about this story adds up at all. Only current certainty? Our beloved club is mired in deep sh*t.

Does anyone out there think that there is anyone at the club who has a clue.
At this rate it looks as if at least 85% of the respondents in the poll on this page were/are seriously deluded.

Question for someone to ask at a press conference very soon. What is the vision/Five Year Plan for the club? Does it involve even staying the Championship? It clearly can't have promotion to the Premier League anywhere in it!

COME ON!

Where's the frickin' update telling us we've offered them re-newed terms!?
They both turn it down? Must be going somewhere else...

This is disgraceful, pathetic and a whole host of other adjectives i'm just to angry to think of just now!

So your telling me, that even after releasing Bullard, Bowyer etc selling Leadbitter, and now receiving the wind fall from the Rhodes deal, we STILL cannot agree terms with two players currently at a club holding their purse strings so tight they could get blisters!

Its hard to stay optimistic when getting so repeatedly smacked in the crotch.

Wow, 233 comments and rising. Doubt anyone will get as far as reading mine.

We have to wait and see about this. If the players were looking for 10K+ a week then that is frankly ridiculous. Players probably think as we have an alleged rich owner they can fil their own pocket.

These guys are at Peterborough and so far no premier league side has pitched in. So how good are they??

Would like Boyd not Taylor and £2M seems an awful lot.

Players need to realign their expectations AND SO DO SUPPORTERS.

If you guys think we should pay whatever they want perhaps you can dig into your own pockets and help out.

No? Thought not!

oh dear how sad never mind...Well done to PJ for attracting the talent but seriously we dont know the ins and outs just yet spare the whip just for now...

We are in fact in the most lucartive division in the world if we are seriouse about a 90 Million pound promotion to the Premier Leauge spend the money get the very best for your buck but get the players in
PJ youve be a man marvel getting the talent to this point but you really must put your foot down right now Clegg or whoever must never be involved in this process if it is this that is causing our demise
my feelings are that if we do not progress to the playoffs at the very least this season PR is going to be just a distant memory in peoples minds....and no one wants this this is a turning point not because of these two particular players , if finacaily strapped Bristol City can take players way from us then you really do need to hold a seriouse board meeting and discuss where the issue lies....this is infact the most serious issue facing our club the line must be drawn and PJ now is the time to be paitent no longer you have to say and do something...Marcus needs to really think about this increase the wage bill increase the player budget and my friends you will have a team second to none get the scouts out abroad South America etc...do whatever it takes spend 50 Million and reap the 90 Million+++ from the promotion playoffs and Premier leauge this is the time to Man up Marcus ....Better to live One Day as a Tiger than a thousand years as a worm ....think about it who dares will win this one NOW IS THE TIME!!!

Did anyone seriously believe we would make any signings of players who would make a difference?

We appear to be hiding behind FFP and presumably cannot even match the existing contracts players are on. The only option is going to be youth, and that is going to make for a long and difficult season.

We will never know the exact reasons but with Davies, these two and the complete unwillingness to even attempt to get Edu, transfer policy has to be 100% wrong - the buck has to stop with the ownership of the club.

I went to bed last night dejected, I'm absolutely fuming at work today, like a bear with a sore head, I really do feel sorry for my colleagues!

For all those who are still with the club for the way things are being done, get a grip! We have gone backwards since Evans came in, I think we need a protest, or something I don't care what you all say this is not the first time this has happened and I'm sure it wont be the last. As for PJ I don't care who's in charge, they'll get fcuk all support from Evans and Minor Clegg, so we may as well have my gran.

I can't put into words how I feel really, just glad I have the day off tomorrow, a few beers are needed tonight.

One last thing, Evans, put up the money to pay a Championship standard player or come out and tell us we're skint and in trouble, I think we'd appreciate the honesty and at least know ahy we keep failing to land targets.
Otherwise, please look to sell up and take Humpty Dumpty with you!

Thanks Tractortrog, but please get back to reality. The club is committed (as it must) to the FFP rules. We must therefore start to live within our means. The pipe dream of spending £50m on new players cannot happen; how could we generate the revenue to support this investment?

Unfortunately the perception persists that money spent on new players (and money no object either) will cure all ills. This has never worked in the past and from an investment point of view, Cresswell apart, we will struggle to see any real return on any of PJ's acquisitions. ME may have deep pockets but I guess his arms aren't long enough now.

Too many comments here to even read, but a handful is enough to get the general tone.

Good players, yes, improve the squad? Probably. Add depth? For sure.

Worth breaking the wage structure and unsettling everyone because they think they have us cornered? No.

Player/agent power is over.

Let POSH keep them or let them go elsewhere.

Clegg and Evans have my total support in this, i'd genuinely rather we went down this year than buckled under the pressure of two bad results and an impatient fan base. The changes at the club over the last 12-18 months have shown much more forward thinking and returned the club to the one i love- that plays good football.

I think even the squad we have will get us to mid-table again this year, and with a couple of similar additions we'll push on next year and the year after.

Two POSH players can't hold us to ransom. We're Ipswich.

Are we surprised.

Lets face it we are an ordinary Championship team going nowhere whilst Evans and Clegg are in charge.

Spot on ITFCOYB!
We should not be held to ransom by greedy players / agents.
If the clubs had agreed fees and the reason for the deal not being done is wages, then they were asking for more than we were prepared to pay - simple as.
We want players who want to come and play for us for the right reasons not just the £££!

Absolutely gutted when I heard the news that this deal has probably fallen through..

BUT

Do we really want players who are just here for the pay check ,and care little for the vison and values of the club?

I can imagine how these deals can break down. Say Boyd is valued at £1M. He is on , say, £8k a week at P'borgh. We offer ,say £11k a week. BUT, his agent informs Boyd that, if he waits a year and leaves for free then any club he moves to can be persuaded to pay the potential transfer fee as an addition to his wages - say spread out over 3 years of his contract. This is good for the club, as they maintain the £1M in their bank rather than having to pay it all out in one go (and earn interest whilst they hold onto it, or parts of it...) - the player then can ask for an additional £7k a week (the £1M spread over the 150 weeks of his 3 year contract.

So, Boyd and his agent could well be demanding , say , £18k a week as that is what they say they will receive in 10-12 months time. We, however, have a wage structure and don't want to break it, esp with the Bullard saga fresh in our blue bonces... We also value the player at a fair price (this is why I say £11k - that what I value him at any rate)

Anyhoo, just a thought....
