Deal for Posh Pair Falls Through
Wednesday, 29th Aug 2012 23:01

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has revealed that George Boyd and Paul Taylor have turned down their proposed move to Town. The pair were at Portman Road this afternoon and underwent medicals but were unable to agree personal terms.

MacAnthony tweeted: “Just had a phone call re Boyd and Taylor Posh fans from [Peterborough director of football Barry Fry] to tell me that they have turned down the move to Ipswich after meeting to discuss terms today with Ipswich and have failed to agree terms.

“This is the reason people shouldn't discuss bids been accepted etc until things are signed, sealed and delivered. Transfer window is mad isn't it?”

He later added: "Before Posh fans wet their pants, still 48 hours till window closes and I hate the uncertainty as much as rest of you on this. Honest opinion."

A statement on the Peterborough United website subsequently released reads: "George Boyd and Paul Taylor have rejected personal terms at Ipswich Town.

"Winger George Boyd and striker Paul Taylor have rejected personal terms with Ipswich Town after meeting club officials on Wednesday.

"The pair both passed medicals at Portman Road, but terms could not be agreed.

"The transfer listed pair both played for Posh in the 3-2 defeat at Reading on Tuesday night with Taylor scoring the opening goal."

Posh accepted a Town offer believed to be in the region of £2 million on Monday with the pair, whose current deals are up next summer, transfer-listed having refused to sign new contracts at London Road.

Surprise surprise! Not one to say I told you so,but.............I told you so! But not even I thought they would bother to do the medical if they were miles apart on terms, what a pathetic joke this fiasco has turned out to be,truely embarrassment!

Why are people calling for Jewells head? I dont get it! If you have £10 in your pocket you cant go and buy something worth £20 can you! its the same with these 2 players. Another offer came in from Middlesborough and suddenly they upped their wage demands to a Jimmy Bullard level - which we all know town cant afford - and Evans and Clegg told them where to. I would much rather see us struggle with our yougnsters then go the portsmouth way of paying through our teeth with over the top wages on the gamble we would get into the premier league. We arent close enough to promotion to warrent the gamble of paying these 2 players something we cant afford!

Any true Town fan will remember a certain Finidi George!

Saying that is the deal dead in the water or have they just turned down our first contract offer? will find out by tomorrow!

Yet another situation of going shopping, putting it the trolley and finding the wallet hasn't enough in it to pay for the goods...
And the shop doesn't take American Express or weekend Golfing vouchers

I forewearned everybody a day or so ago that with Clegg running the show this was destined to failure. How many times since Simon Says took over the reigns at the negotiation table have we been burried so dramatically. It rarely occured under David Sheepshanks which tells you everything you probably need to know.

It seems a strange way to try and do business. I would have thought before making a bid, an unofficial informal chat with the players' agent(s) to establish what they might want in the way of wages would make sense. It would save a lot of time, money and heartache!!!!

We should not meet the demands of greedy players Stuff them i say and what do we need most a centre half or a 5ft 7inch forward?

I think this shows the clubs ambition. Its actually a little embarrasing. The problem is, everything at ITFC seems to come out. Bullard on 15k a week, Boyd and taylor would no this. So its no doubt what they expect. Its ALL about money.. with EVERY player FACT! thats life in football.. ITFC are not going to get round this. we need to pay

So glad I didnt renew my season ticket!

What is the point of bidding for players then offering derisory terms, its a waste of everyones time. If we're not willing to offer big wages we should be targeting lower league players who will not demand big wages!

People calling for Jewell head save your breath, I expect him to walk if this shambles continues, just like Joe Royle when we failed to back him.

Biggaz67, think you mean the northwest .. Not sure why this seems the lowest point we have been as a club.. suppose it hasnt helped that we all thought our great owner would spend spend spend season after season..

So we're given to believe that George Boyd wants to raise his weekly salary from £7,000 a week to £15,000 and won't [ supposedly ] accept a £3,000 rise to £10,000 ! Now call me old fashioned or a bit of a cynic, but it seems to me that the Peterborough Two think they have us over a barrel as there's only a couple of days left in this window. IF, this is the case, I'd tell them to P... Off as well. As someone posted, they may have been reasonable additions to the squad, but they are hardly God's gift to football. And before anyone says it, even I could look good on a doctored video !
On another topic, you would hope that this is not part of some plan to get PJ to upsticks so that Mr. Evans can bring in his mate 'arry, or would you. Just a thought !
Last point, promise. With all this anti feeling now created against these two mercenary players, just imagine if talks resume today and they eventually sign. Again, just a thought.

... I really amnot sure where the blame lies, Jewell... Clegg.... Evans....... but at the end of the day, something has gone SEVERELY wrong this summer and it's so heartbreaking as a loyal fan so see somewhere a lack of grit and ambition to make signings is creeping in. Now, I would never want to see the hell of Administration grip us again, and never would I want to see FFP sanctions against us, and to become the new Porstmouth, however as a fan this transfer window has been a nightmare... I am not the biggest fan of Jewell, but in all fairness if the deal was screwed up by Evans/Clegg and their wage requests were reasonably in line with the division norm.... I wouldn't blame Jewell for resigning as this manager SEEMS to have been subject of very bad micromanaging; We feared we'd lose Chambers at the 11th hour and got lucky, sadly this time... it seems we did not.

Is the expectation that we create a premiership pursuit with a League 1 pay structure? I feel the fans and PJ are owed a huge explanation over this, because if we sustain heavy injuries early on, our season, one to at very least improve on last year, is dead int he water.

Barry Fry will be SIZZLING that he isn't going to get the agreed valuation now as it will surely diminish once the window closes...
He wont be BOYD by that news that these two aren't TAYLOR made for us, As Evans and Clegg show we have to cut our Cloth to meet the new income / expenditure rules.

Perhaps the club could come out and explain the situation. If their wage demands were much higher just because they think Evans will pay, then say so. All of us in real monetary terms are having to tighten the purse strings, so if this was the case then why shouldn't we know. If the club has a strict policy of say no more than 10,000 pw week then say so.

We can concentrate on building a defense now. Great teams build from the back etc.

If we cannot compete with the wage demands of 2 mediocre players then we may as well give up any hope of making the premiership dream a reality.
I feel sorry for Jewell who must be pulling his hair out(if he has any left!!).
So what now?
More last minute panic loan signings players that other clubs are not interested in?
Why would the likes of Martin want to sign a new contract when the club clearly has no ambition.

the club seems to be in a right mess . have to feel for the manager here , but leaving transfers so near to deadline leaves us in a bad position in any negotiations with clubs or players .
if we're not offering acceptable wages , that probably makes it unlikely that Martin will sign an extension.
with a potential windfall from any Rhodes deal , surely we can get things sorted , we've hardly spent any money so far and have released some high earners.
you get the feeling something is seriously wrong with the way this once great club is being run
